Lunar New Year Festival

Date: Saturday, January 26-Sunday, January 27, 2019

Location: Downtown Monterey Park

Event producer World Journal and a bounty of food vendors, entertainers and merchants invite you to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Pig in Monterey Park. The Festival will offer unique gifts and speciality items along with food booths. amusement rides and lots of live entertainment. Arrive early Saturday morning to view the arrival of the traditional New year lion and dragon dancers with firecrackers to kick-off the festival. Chinese New Year in Beverly Hills

Date: Saturday, January 26, 2019

Location: Saban Theatre, Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau (BHCVB) will host “Happy Chinese New Year, Charming Jing-Jin-Ji” in Beverly Hills on January 26, 2019. This is the eighth consecutive year of Beverly Hills hosting a Chinese New Year celebratory event. The 2019 Chinese New Year event will be divided into three parts: a variety show, a “Jing-Jin-Ji” photo exhibition and a cultural heritage crafts display and demonstration. The variety show will feature performance groups from Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei with Chinese acrobatics, martial arts, folk dance, Peking opera and more. The cultural heritage crafts display and demonstration will include Peking Opera costumes, ceremonial tea service, traditional folk music and more.

2. The DTLA Proud Festival returns to Pershing Square for a weekend of community and diversity celebration starting with a free all ages celebration this Friday featuring live music, food vendors, artists and more representing the culture, history, and diversity of the Los Angeles LGBTQ+ community. 8. The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum will host Late Night Fridays where guests can enjoy free general admission from 5 to 8 p.m. and gain access to special activities, 3D movies, behind-the-scenes tours, live excavations, and more. FREE

9. Barnsdall Fridays returns to Barnsdall Art Park for the tenth year in a row, with evening tastings of boutique wines and music from KCRW DJs perched atop a hill with incredible city views.

11. A Yeti Village has been constructed on Hollywood and Vine in anticipation for the movie SMALLFOOT. Designed to look like winter, visitors of all ages can dance in a blizzard, swing on a cloud, ride a 20-foot slide, play in a snowball pit, sing karaoke, do arts and crafts and more. 12. Rooftop Cinema Club returns to the rooftops of LEVEL in DTLA and NeueHouse in Hollywood with multiple screenings this week that include The Greatest Showman, Coco and more.

13. Check out Todd Schorr’s Neverlasting Miracles at KP Projects on La Brea Ave. Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday. The exhibition runs through September 1.

21. Summer Happenings at The Broad is a series of late-night events featuring music, performance and art. Now in its third year, the evening series is inspired by The Broad’s new exhibition, A Journey That Wasn’t  which explores artists’ representations of time, memory and repetition. This month the series will highlight Chinese artists with performances by post-punk band Re-TROS, Xiu Xiu, MIIA, Asian Dope Boys and more.

41. There’s a free community tribute to the late Jonathan Gold on the steps of City Hall in DTLA this Sunday. 27. Japan House Los Angeles (JHLA) presents Takeo Paper Show titled SUBTLE, an experimental exploration of paper, on view from April 13 through May 23, 2018. The exhibit will showcase innovative paper creations that will have you look at paper in an entirely different way. 41. The 13th Annual Thai New Year Songkran Festival 2018 will be held in Hollywood’s Thai Town neighborhood this Sunday. One of the largest festivals in the Los Angeles area, this free 12-hour event will take place over six blocks of Hollywood Blvd between Western Avenue and Normandie Avenue.FREE

42. Visit the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, a majestic Mediterranean masterpiece built in 1915 and designed by distinguished architect Reginald Davis Johnson, from April 22-May 20. 43. Stash House, a new escape room in L.A. will allow you and your friends to get actively involved in a crime drama — with zero chance of going to prison. Happening all week.

Cherry Blossom Festivals Return In March

Spring is on our doorstep, and the corresponding flower blooms in Los Angeles County (such as they are) are right around the corner. While places like the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve are likely to have a  down year due to lack of winter rains, there are still spots in the greater L.A.-area where you can enjoy a bit of colorful and fragrant fun. Case in point: Cherry blossom festivals.

To that end, if you’d like to check out some of the cherry blossom related events/festivals/walks available in and around our city, ‘We Like LA’ has compiled a handy list of locations, dates, times, and costs for you to peruse below. These include the South Coast Botanic Cherry Blossom Festival, The West Covina Cherry Blossom Festival, the Torrance Cherry Blossom Cultural Festival, and Cherry Blossom Festival in Monterey Park.

One quick note on Descanso for 2018: Instead of back-to-back weekends of cherry blossom festival events, this year they’re spreading out their talks/workshops/performances on various dates throughout March, while also offering ‘spring bloom walks’ every weekend in March and April.

26. Union Station Holiday Festival is a one-day pop-up artisan marketplace featuring goods from L.A.’s most sought-after artists and artisans. FREE

27. This Saturday NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) present their annual DocuSlate, an entire day dedicated to documentary film screenings. The screenings will take place at the South Park Center on Hill St. starting at 10:30 a.m. and will go until the after-party kicks off at 11 p.m. A $25 all-access pass gets you admission to all screenings plus an open bar.

28. The 55th annual Los Angeles Harbor Holiday Afloat comes to the Los Angeles Harbor for a celebration of the holiday season on the water. FREE

29. This Saturday at noon is the First Annual Hoppy Howlidays Party, a benefit for the Linda Blair Worldheart Foundation at the Yorkshire Square Brewery in Torrance. The Worldheart Foundation focuses on the rescue and welfare of shelter animals, especially commonly overlooked bully breeds. Saturday’s events include a “Snuggle Drive”  (if guests bring a new or gently used towel, blanket or dog bed, they’ll receive a discount on pints), an Opportunity Drawing with prizes plus games and beer and adorable dogs on hand.

31. The Belmont Shore Annual Christmas Parade returns on with 100 floats and a special Grand Marshal, five-time Olympic Medalist Tony Azevedo! Parade starts at 6 p.m. FREE

32. Feastown at Eastown, a new, bimonthly popup night marketplace featuring food vendors and live music, debuted in Hollywood October and now returns for two Saturdays in November with a Thanksgiving-theme. There is no cover to attend. Part of the proceeds from food purchases will go to help locals in need.

33. There is an opening reception for “TOYBOX” this Saturday, December 2 from 7 to 11 p.m. in Gallery 1 at Corey Helford Gallery. The exhibition contains 36 new oil paintings, as well as sculptures and installations from pop-surrealist Ron English. On view through December 30. FREE

34. The Mosaic Art & Craft Fair in Alhambra pops up in the 626 with a day of unique shopping, kids’ art workshops, face painting and the man himself – Santa Claus! Free and open to the public. FREE

35. The SWEA Los Angeles Annual Swedish Christmas Fair come to Torrance’s Ken Miller Recreation Center this Sunday. The event features tons of Swedish food, Swedish shopping, folk dancing, a Santa Lucia pageant and a live choir.

36. This Sunday is the 73rd Annual NELA Christmas Parade. The parade route goes from Ave. 60 to Sycamore Grove Park. Starts at 1 p.m. FREE

37. The L.A. Choral Lab begins its fourth season with CHRISTMAS LIGHTS, a concert of holiday choral music. There will be two performances this Sunday, at 3 and 7 p.m.

38. Visit Downtown San Pedro on Sunday for the 37th Annual Spirit of San Pedro Holiday Parade a celebration of the local community and the holidays. FREE

39SHOP FOR HER is a one-day pop-up event featuring socially conscious, female founded brands focused on empowering women. Taking place at PLATFORM in Culver City at 11 a.m.
