One of the most exciting aspects of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is that its most transportive spaces do not require a ticket. The museum is surrounded by expansive, multi-tiered gardens designed by Studio-MLA. These lush public parks are free to enter and feature dense clusters of native California flora.

As you wander the meandering paths beneath the cloud-shaped building, you will discover incredible sculptures hidden among the greenery. Star Wars fans will be thrilled to find a bronze statue of Leia strangling Jabba the Hutt, as well as a fountain topped with Yoda and Grogu. However, the art extends beyond a galaxy far, far away, with sculptures of Rosie the Riveter and tributes to early stop-motion animation. The museum’s CEO hopes this space becomes a relaxing daily retreat for locals and visitors alike.

An Imaginative Public Library

If you love books, you must visit the library at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Unlike stuffy, traditional research rooms, this three-story space is warm, inviting, and flooded with natural light. The first floor is free and open to the public, with no admission ticket required.

The shelves are packed with fascinating titles, from paleoart to rock and roll posters to rare comic books. Heavy, oversized art books sit on tables for visitors to peruse. The library’s director wants to dismantle the idea that research libraries are only for a specific type of person. It is an incredible space to learn about the artwork featured in the galleries or simply find creative inspiration. Just remember not to reshelve the books yourself—a bright orange trolley with a photo of Yoda reminds guests: “Reshelve, do not. Leave books here, you must!”
