Google Unveils New Android Features and Updates

Google is rolling out seven new updates to enhance Android devices. Key features include the ability to edit Google Messages up to 15 minutes after sending, available for Android 8 and later. Improvements to instant hotspot connectivity will allow seamless connections for tablets and Chromebooks and easy switching during Google Meet calls, starting June 10th on Android 11 or later. The Google Home Favorites widget, now in public preview, offers quick smart home control, and Wear OS 3 smartwatches now support this feature. Additional updates include new Gboard Emoji Kitchen stickers, expanded PayPal support in Google Wallet for the US and Germany, and extended digital car key support for select Mini, Mercedes-Benz, and Polestar models.

Anthropic Introduces Customizable AI Assistant Tool

Anthropic is launching a new feature for its AI chatbot Claude, called “tool use” or “function calling,” enabling users to create personalized AI assistants such as email helpers or shopping bots by connecting to any external API. This tool can analyze data for product recommendations or provide quick customer service responses and can also work with images for applications like virtual interior design consultants. Available through Anthropic’s Messages API, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Vertex AI, pricing is based on text volume, measured in “tokens.” Since beta testing began in April, users like Study Fetch have developed innovative solutions like the Spark.E AI tutor. This tool allows the creation of versatile AI assistants, independent of Google and OpenAI.

Amazon Receives FAA Approval for Extended Prime Air Drone Flights

Amazon has gained FAA approval to operate its Prime Air drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), a significant milestone for its goal of delivering products within 30 minutes. With this regulatory clearance, Amazon Prime is set to scale operations immediately in College Station, Texas, expanding drone deliveries to more densely populated areas using its current MK27 drone, which carries packages up to five pounds and features advanced detect-and-avoid capabilities. Amazon Prime is also developing a faster, lighter MK30 drone capable of flying in the rain. This approval follows the closure of its testing site in Lockeford, California, and the upcoming launch of a new Prime Air location in Tolleson, Arizona. Amazon joins other BVLOS-approved operators like UPS, Wing, FedEx, and Zipline.

ESA Prepares Hera Mission to Investigate Asteroid Collision

The European Space Agency (ESA) is conducting final tests for its Hera mission, set to launch in October, aimed at investigating the asteroid that NASA’s DART mission impacted in 2022. Hera’s goal is to gather detailed data on the collision to improve asteroid deflection techniques for planetary defense. The spacecraft and its Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) system are undergoing preflight testing, validated through virtual tests in Spain and Germany. Hera will navigate the Dimorphos and Didymos binary asteroid system, using its Asteroid Framing Camera for both science and navigation. Launching this October, Hera will journey for two years, making a Mars flyby before arriving at the asteroid system in October 2026.

Instagram Expands Safety Controls to Combat Harassment

Instagram is enhancing its “limits” feature, allowing users to hide direct messages and comments from all but their close friends. Originally designed to help creators manage harassment, this tool is now available to anyone facing unwanted messages. By enabling this feature, users will only see interactions from their close friends, while other accounts won’t know their content is hidden. The feature can be set for up to four weeks and renewed as needed. To enable limits, go to your profile, tap the menu in the top-right corner, and select “Limited interactions.” From there, you can choose to limit interactions from recent followers, non-followers, or everyone except close friends.

Verizon Partners with AST SpaceMobile to Enhance Coverage

Verizon has signed a $100 million deal with satellite broadband provider AST SpaceMobile to address coverage gaps for customers traveling beyond terrestrial cell towers’ reach. Using the 850 MHz band, AST will connect its satellite network to mobile phones. This summer, AST SpaceMobile is launching five satellites into low orbit and recently secured a long-term deal with AT&T, adding to its investments from Google and Vodafone. Unlike Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite for iPhones, AST’s technology supports voice and video calls, providing comprehensive coverage. AST SpaceMobile’s founder and CEO, Abel Avellan, stated the partnership aims to achieve 100% coverage of the continental United States, following their successful 5G connection demonstration with an unmodified smartphone from a wireless dead zone in Hawaii.

What: Now a cherished summer tradition in Los Angeles, Barnsdall Park’s wine tastings have made a triumphant return after a five-year hiatus. Located atop Olive Hill on the west lawn of the historic Hollyhock House, these Friday evening fundraisers offer attendees the chance to enjoy fine boutique wines provided by Silverlake Wine. For an additional $25, you can also tour the iconic Hollyhock House during the event. The experience is enhanced by a spectacular sunset and stunning 360-degree views of the city, making it a perfect summer evening outing.

WeHo Pride

Where: West Hollywood

What: Though LA Pride has relocated from West Hollywood, the city continues to host its own vibrant Pride celebration in and around West Hollywood Park. WeHo Pride features an all-weekend music festival called OUTLOUD, alongside the free WeHo Pride Street Fair, running Saturday and Sunday from noon to 8pm. Saturday’s festivities also include the Women’s Freedom Festival from noon to 6pm and the Dyke March from 6 to 6:30pm. The celebration culminates on Sunday with a parade starting at noon at Santa Monica Boulevard and North Crescent Heights Boulevard.

1. Don’t Advertise Your Absence

2. Invest in Timers for Lights

A dark house is an obvious sign that no one is home. Invest in timers for your indoor and outdoor lights and set them to mimic your regular daily activity. This can create an illusion of occupancy.

3. Secure Doors and Windows

Before you leave, ensure all doors and windows are locked securely. Don’t forget to check the garage door, as well as smaller windows in basements and attics. Consider investing in deadbolts for added security on external doors as our safety advice.

4. Hold Your Mail

A stuffed mailbox or a pile of newspapers at the doorstep signals that the house is unoccupied. Ask your postal service to hold your mail, or request a trusted neighbor to collect it for you.

Economic Update | Week Ending May 25, 2024

Economic news this week – It was a tough week for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. After five straight weeks of gains, the Dow ended the week down 2.4% from last week’s record high when the Dow closed over 40,000 for the first time. While some of this week’s sell-off can be attributed to profit-taking, interest rate fears were a factor as well. The Dow dropped 604 points on Thursday, its biggest single-day drop in 2024, following minutes released from the last Federal Reserve policy meeting. Fed comments included that inflation was more stubborn than expected and that the Fed now expects just one interest rate drop this year, down from their guidance of four expected drops at the start of 2024. Goldman also changed their forecast from a Fed rate drop in July to no rate drop until September. While there have finally been some signs that the economy may have begun to lose steam, the Commerce Department reported Friday that durable goods purchases surged in April. Durable goods purchases, which include things like cars, trucks, appliances, etc. shot up 0.7% month-over-month in April. Experts forecasted a 1% decline. Contrasting that was consumer confidence which had the lowest reading since last November. Next week the Personal Consumption Expenditure (CPE) index will be released. That will give us more insight into where inflation is heading.

Stock markets – The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the week at 39,069.59, down 2.4% from 40,003.59 last week. It is up 3.7% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the week at 5,304.72, unchanged from 5,303.27 last week. The S&P is up 11.2% year-to-date. The Nasdaq closed the week at 16,920.80, up 1.4% from 16,684.97 last week. It is up 12.7% year-to-date.

U.S. Treasury bond yields – The 10-year treasury bond closed the week yielding 4.46%, up from 4.42% last week. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the week at 4.57, almost unchanged from 4.56% last week. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates follow bond yields.

Mortgage rates – Every Thursday Freddie Mac publishes interest rates based on a survey of mortgage lenders throughout the week. The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that mortgage rates for the most popular loan products as of May 23, 2024, were as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 6.94%, down from 7.02% last week. The 15-year fixed was 6.24%, down from 6.28% last week.

Freddie Mac was chartered by Congress in 1970 to keep money flowing to mortgage lenders in support of homeownership and rental housing. Their mandate is to provide liquidity, stability, and affordability to the U.S.

U.S. existing-home sales – The National Association of Realtors reported that existing-home sales totaled 4.14 million units on a seasonally adjusted annualized rate in April, down 1.95 from an annualized rate of 4.22 million in April 2023. The median price for a home in the U.S. in April was $407,600, up 5.7% from $385,800 last April. There was a 3.5-month supply of homes for sale in April, up from a 3-month supply one year ago. First-time buyers accounted for 33% of all sales. Investors and second-home purchases accounted for 16% of all sales. All cash purchases accounted for 28% of all sales. Foreclosures and short sales accounted for 2% of all sales.

NASA’s Psyche Mission Ignites Futuristic Electric Engines

NASA has powered up the electric Hall thrusters on Psyche, a spacecraft now journeying towards a metal-rich asteroid in the main asteroid belt beyond Mars. Launched on October 13, 2023, aboard a SpaceX rocket, Psyche is now in “full cruise” mode. The NASA mission also tested laser-based deep space communications, successfully transmitting a laser signal back to Earth from nearly 10 million miles away. Expected to reach the asteroid by 2029, Psyche will orbit it for two years, sending valuable data back to NASA. Scientists believe Psyche could be the exposed core of a planetesimal, providing unique insights into planetary formation. Ion propulsion, the technology behind Psyche’s thrusters will allow it to reach speeds of up to 124,000 mph, showcasing the potential of ion propulsion for future interplanetary missions.

X Conceals Likes to Promote ‘Edgy’ Engagement

In a major shift, X (formerly known as Twitter) will no longer show what posts users have liked, aiming to protect public image and encourage more “edgy” content engagement. This change, first reported by MacRumors after a flag was discovered in the iOS app, removes the Likes tab from user profiles.
