Economic Update | Week Ending December 9, 2023

Stock markets – Stock markets were relatively flat this week following almost two months of weekly gains. Mortgage rates and bond yields dropped further this week before settling back to last week’s rates and yields following the November Jobs report. It was widely felt that hiring was stalling, and that the unemployment rate was rising from near-historic lows but hiring ticked up in November and the unemployment rate dropped. The Fed is looking to cool the job market because the low unemployment rate is causing a labor shortage. This encourages consumer spending which fuels inflation because when people are not worried about losing their jobs, they spend money. It remains to be seen how the Fed interprets this jobs report, but it’s certainly not something that would cause the Fed to feel the economy was slowing and moving toward a recession. If the Fed felt the economy was slowing, they would need to cut rates from their current 22-year high levels. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the week at 36,247.87, almost unchanged from 36,254.50 last week. It is up 9.4% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the week at 4,604.37, up 0.2% from 4,594.63 last week. It is up 19.9% year-to-date.

Nasdaq closed the week at 14,403.97, up 0.4% from 14,350.03 last week. It is up 37.6% year-to-date. Job growth heated up in November – The Department of Labor and Statistics reported that 199,000 new full-time jobs were added in November, up from 150,000 new jobs in October. The unemployment rate dropped to 3.7% in November, down from 3.9% in October. Average hourly wages increased 4% year-over-year, the smallest year-over-year increase since 2021, yet exceeding the inflation rate.

U.S. Treasury bond yields – The 10-year treasury bond closed the week yielding 4.22%, unchanged from 4.22% last week. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the week at 4.41%, almost unchanged from 4.40% last week. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates follow bond yields.

Mortgage rates -The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that mortgage rates for the most popular loan products as of December 7, 2023, were as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.03%, down from 7.22% last week. The 15-year fixed was 6.29%, down from 6.56% last week. Rates were lower at the end of the week. The 30-year dropped under 7% on Friday.

Have a great weekend!

Anker’s upcoming Qi2-compatible wireless chargers will offer 15W fast charging for the iPhone 13, 14, and 15, aligning with Apple’s next iOS update. Although there’s no official comment from Apple, the faster charging is expected to be a standard feature for all Qi2 chargers. Currently, there are no Qi2-certified products available, but brands like Anker, Belkin, and Mophie have announced their compatible hardware. Anker’s new MagGo line will include various charging devices, but details like pricing and release dates are still pending. The chargers are designed to work with iPhones at a rate comparable to Apple’s MagSafe technology, but it’s unclear if older iPhone models will be compatible without software updates. The Wireless Power Consortium has already certified six brands, indicating that these products might hit the market soon.

WhatsApp Introduces Auto-Delete Feature for Voice Messages

WhatsApp is expanding its privacy features by introducing the option for voice messages to automatically disappear after they have been listened to. This “View Once” feature, previously available for photos and videos since 2021, now extends to audio messages. Despite the somewhat contradictory use of “View Once” for audio content, it adds an extra layer of privacy for voice messaging, a popular feature of the service. The company suggests practical uses for this feature, such as securely sharing sensitive information like credit card details or planning surprises. Users will be able to activate this feature by tapping a “1” icon next to the message’s waveform while recording. However, the feature has not yet appeared on all devices.

Stellantis Enters a Significant Agreement with Ample Focused on Electric Vehicle Battery Swapping

Stellantis has partnered with Ample to introduce battery swapping for Fiat 500e vehicles in Madrid in 2024, initially for a car-sharing service. This initiative, exploring a rapid battery replacement system, could extend to privately owned EVs in Europe and the US. The project represents Stellantis’ response to potential challenges in EV charging infrastructure, aiming to reduce charging times significantly. While popular in China, battery swapping has been less successful in the US, partly due to the lack of standardized batteries. The success of this pilot project in Madrid could pave the way for broader adoption and new business models in the EV market.

Messenger to Implement Default End-to-End Encryption

Meta is implementing end-to-end encryption as the default setting for one-on-one chats and calls on Messenger, a long-awaited feature that ensures only the communicating parties can access the contents of their messages. Originally introduced as an optional feature in 2016, this shift to default encryption marks a significant change. According to Loredana Crisan, VP of Messenger, the feature’s development took years, involving extensive work from various teams to maintain Messenger’s core features, like themes and custom reactions, within encrypted chats. The transition to default encryption for all chats might take some time. End-to-end encryption for group chats in Messenger remains optional. In addition, end-to-end encryption for Instagram is underway.

McDonald’s Employs Google AI Technology to Ensure Freshness of Fries

McDonald’s is collaborating with Google to implement generative AI in thousands of its stores by 2024, involving hardware and software upgrades. This integration, part of a broader update that includes ordering kiosks and the mobile app, aims to optimize operations using AI to analyze vast data sets. One expected benefit is the delivery of hotter, fresher food, potentially transforming customer experience. McDonald’s suggests it will streamline operations for store crews and enhance customer and crew experiences. This AI initiative aligns with the deployment of a new operating system aimed at unifying the experience across McDonald’s mobile app and store kiosks.

Simple Winter Cleaning Tips | Home Tips

While it’s not officially winter, the season for winter cleaning has already begun. With holiday soirees and family visiting from near and far, your home should stay spick and span. Read on below for simple tips you can use to lean up your abode this winter.

Make a Checklist

From big tasks to small messes, creating room checklists for winter cleaning will help keep you on task. Make your list the old-fashioned way on pen and paper, or download an easy-to-use cleaning app to help you organize like a professional.

Check your Fireplace

There’s nothing better than a crackling fireplace to warm your room on a cold winter’s day, but it’s important you check the safety measures first. During the summer months, dirt can hide in chimneys, so give them a good clean before lighting them during your winter cleaning routine.

Clean your Radiators

Another place where dust and debris hide? Your radiator. While many of us have the heating on to keep warm, it’s vital you give your radiators a thorough clean to remove any hidden dust.

Show Your Windows Some Winter Cleaning Love

Smears and streaks can easily be seen on windows, especially when the winter sunlight shines through. Give yours a good clean using a wet cloth. First, clean the frame, removing any cobwebs or dust. After you clean your window, you can dry everything off with a kitchen cloth to avoid any water stains.

Say Goodbye to Dust on Your Carpets

Simply vacuuming does not mean your carpet is clean. With dust, hair, and more that can build up in carpets, it’s important to give them a thorough cleaning. Larger carpets or rugs should be shaken outdoors over a fence at least two to four times a year.

Spend Time Winter Cleaning Your Curtains and Shutters

While not necessarily visible, curtains hold everything from pollen to traffic fumes. You should try to clean the curtains at least twice a year in the washing machine.

Clean Out the Fridge

With turkey day leftovers on their way out and more holiday dishes on their way in, it’s time to get your fridge in check. Start by emptying all your food from the fridge into cool bags. Then, wash and rinse your fridge, drawers, doors, and shelves using lukewarm soapy water.

Economic Update | Week Ending December 2, 2023

Stock markets – Stock markets rose for the seventh consecutive week as inflation has moderated, and bond yields and mortgage rates have dropped. On Thursday the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE), a gauge of inflation that the Fed relies on when setting monetary policy came in at a 3% year-over-year increase, the core PCE was 3.5%. That marked the smallest increase since 2021. On Friday Fed Chairman Powell suggested that the Fed may be done raising rates, but said it was “too early to guess when rates will fall.” Even speaking about rates falling was something that nobody could have imagined Powell discussing just two months ago. He also spoke about progress in cooling inflation and the jobs market. Stocks jumped on Thursday and Friday. The Dow gained almost 800 points in the two days. Next Friday the November jobs report will be released. Investors are eagerly awaiting the number of new jobs created and the amount that wages have increased. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the week at 36,254.50, up 2.4% from 35,390.15 last week. It is up 9.4% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the week at 4,594.63, up 0.8% from 4,559.34 last week. It is up 19.7% year-to-date. The Nasdaq closed the week at 14,350.03, up 0.7% from 14,250.85 last week. It is up 37.1% year-to-date.

U.S. Treasury bond yields – The 10-year treasury bond closed the week yielding 4.22%, down from 4.47% last week. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the week at 4.40%, almost unchanged from 4.60% last week. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates follow bond yields.

Mortgage rates -The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that mortgage rates for the most popular loan products as of November 30, 2023, were as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.22%, down from 7.29% last week. The 15-year fixed was 6.56%, down from 6.67% last week. Rates were lower at the end of the week. The 30-year dropped under 7% on Friday.

Have a great weekend!

Economic Update | Month Ending November 30, 2023

Banner
Stock markets soared in November – Stock markets notched seven straight weeks of gains as key reports indicated that inflation was cooling. The October Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed that consumer prices in October had climbed 3.2% from one year earlier. While the Fed target is 2% this was a step in the right direction. Inflation peaked in June 2022 at 9.1% and worked its way down every month for a year hitting 3% in June 2023. In July, August, and September the year-over-year inflation rate worked its way back up. It was 3.7% in September, so dropping to 3.2% in October was welcome news to investors. The Producer Price Index and Personal Compensation Expenditures Price Index also showed that inflation tamed in October. The jobs market cooled as well with 150,000 new jobs created in October, about ½ the number of new jobs created in September. This news led investors to feel that the economy was slowing, and inflation was taming. Bond yields and mortgage rates fell steadily in November with the 30-year mortgage ending the month about one full percentage point below its 23-year high in mid-October. Experts feel that rate hikes are behind us and that there may even be a Fed rate reduction next year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the month at 35,950.89, up 8.8% from 33,052.87 on October 31. It is up 8.5% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the month at 4,567.80, up 8.9% from 4,193.80 last month. It is up 19% year-to-date. The NASDAQ closed the month at 14,262.22, up 11% from 12,851.24 last month. It is up 36.3% year-to-date.

U.S. Treasury bond yields dropped in November – Cooling inflation led to lower bond yields marking the largest monthly drop in yields of the year. The 10-year treasury bond closed the month yielding 4.38%, down from 4.88% last month. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the month at 4.54%, down from 5.04% last month. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates often follow treasury bond yields.

Mortgage rates – The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that mortgage rates as of November 30, 2023, for the most popular loan products were as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.22%, down from 7.79% at the end of October. The 15-year fixed was 6.56%, down from 7.03% at the end of October. The 30-year fixed rate peaked at around 8.25% in mid-October, a 23-year high.

Home sales data is released by the National Association of Realtors and the California Association of Realtors on the third week of the month for the previous month. Below are the October results.

U.S. existing-home sales – The National Association of Realtors reported that existing-home sales totaled 3.79 million units on a seasonally adjusted annualized rate in October, down 14.6% from an annualized rate of 4.44 million in October 2022. The median price for a home in the U.S. in October was $391,800, up 3.2% from $378,800 last October. There was a 3.6-month supply of homes for sale in October, up from a 3.3-month supply last October. First-time buyers accounted for 28% of all sales. Investors and second-home purchases accounted for 15% of all sales. All cash purchases accounted for 29% of all sales. Foreclosures and short sales accounted for 2% of all sales.

California third quarter housing affordability – The California Association of Realtors released their housing affordability index. It included that single-family detached-home affordability dropped to 15% in the third quarter of 2023, down from 16% in the second quarter and down from 18% one year ago. An income of $221,200 was needed to qualify for the monthly payment of $5,530 to purchase a $843,600 median-priced home. Affordability for a condo or townhome dropped to 23% in the third quarter. An income of $170,400 was needed to qualify for the $4,200 payment to purchase a $650,000 median-price condo or townhome.

California existing-home sales – The California Association of Realtors reported that existing-home sales totaled 241,710 units on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis in October, down 11.9% from a revised 274,410 annualized sales pace in October 2022. October marked the thirteenth straight month of the annualized sales rate dropping under 300,000 on an annualized basis, and the second consecutive month of sales dropping below 250,000 annualized sales, a level that was thought could never happen. Year-to-date, the number of homes sold was down 27.2% in October. The statewide median price paid for a home in October was $840,360, up 5.3% from a revised $798,140 a year ago. There was a 2.7-month supply of homes for sale in October, down from a 3.1-month supply one year ago.

After a four-year journey marked by delays, the Tesla Cybertruck has finally made its debut. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, is overseeing a delivery event at the company’s Austin, Texas factory, scheduled for 12 PM PT / 2 PM CT / 3 PM ET. The event will witness the delivery of Cybertrucks to ten customers, and Tesla is anticipated to reveal updated specifications, pricing, and more details about the vehicle. Originally slated for production in late 2021, delays ensued due to supply chain challenges and manufacturing complexities. Prototype versions of the uniquely designed and divisive Cybertruck have been generating excitement throughout the year, with features like the distinctive windshield wiper adding to the anticipation surrounding the vehicle.

WhatsApp now lets you hide your locked chats behind a secret code

WhatsApp is enhancing privacy features by introducing a new method to conceal locked chats from casual observers. Instead of displaying the locked chats folder alongside regular conversations, users can now hide these chats behind a personalized secret code. This code, which can include letters, numbers, special characters, and emojis, is entered into the WhatsApp search bar to access the locked chats. This added layer of security aims to prevent others from realizing the existence of a locked chat folder on your phone. WhatsApp also allows users to opt for their locked chats to appear in the chat list if preferred. Initially introduced in May, locked chats enable users to secure conversations in a folder accessible only through fingerprint, face scan, or password. In addition to the secret code feature, WhatsApp now allows users to lock a chat by long-pressing on the conversation instead of navigating to the chat’s settings. Meta is gradually rolling out the secret codes, with global availability expected in the coming months.

Expanding its presence in the streaming realm, TikTok introduces new artist accounts

TikTok has launched artist accounts, enabling musicians to access tools that enhance fan outreach and engagement. The Music tab, a key feature, organizes artists’ catalogs and automatically adds new music to facilitate fan discovery. Additional features, such as “Behind the Song,” offer fans insights into the creative process and inspiration behind the music. Artist accounts also provide ways for musicians to promote their work, allowing them to pin a preferred post to the top of the discovery page and utilize tags like “Artist” for verification. Another tag, “New Release,” enables musicians to spotlight upcoming tracks before and after their release. These additions draw parallels with features seen on platforms like Spotify, aligning with TikTok’s broader push into streaming, evident with the earlier launch of TikTok Music, its subscription-driven streaming service. The recent “Add to Music app” feature further facilitates the integration of TikTok songs into users’ Spotify, Apple Music, or Amazon Music playlists. Paul Hourican, TikTok’s global head of music partnerships and programming, expressed the platform’s commitment to empowering artists and enhancing fan connections through these new features.

These creations can be shared on Community Voices, fostering a collaborative platform for user-generated voices. Jaime Bosch, Voicemod CEO, highlights the tool’s capacity to generate entirely new AI-powered voices. Given the non-copyrightable nature of voices, Voicemod’s approach minimizes legal concerns. Likewise, this contributes to the growing landscape of AI voice technology. Voicemod is compatible with both macOS and Windows 10 and 11.

The deal, announced after Thanksgiving, brings Altman back to the helm. Three of the four board members involved in Altman’s earlier dismissal have now departed. The current board comprises Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo. Ice at Santa Monica

Located just blocks from the ocean, Ice in downtown Santa Monica brings a bit of winter to the comfortable coastal city. The 8,000-square-foot outdoor rink runs daily from mid-November to mid-January on the corner of Fifth Street and Arizona Avenue. All-day admission ($20) includes skate rentals.

Xbox Plaza, Los Angeles

Iceoplex, Simi Valley

Open all year round, Iceoplex in Simi Valley has public skating times each day of the week. People of all ages and skating abilities are welcome to glide around the well-groomed ice in the indoor rink. Looking for somewhere to host a special event? Iceoplex can be booked for parties.

Fairplex, Pomona

The Elf on the Shelf event at Pomona’s Fairplex is undoubtedly a massive hit with younger family members. There’s an extra charge for the ice-skating rink, though you can also enjoy the charming Christmas-themed village, complete with shops and eateries, and walk through the Elf on the Shelf display, which features whimsical decorations and plenty of lights.

Iceland Ice Skating Rink, Los Angeles
