Weekend Events: February 1-3

Aside from watching this Sundays big game, there are plenty of other fun things to do in LA for the non-sports fans. Since time is of the essence (especially on our rainy days), we have rounded up the best activities this weekend provides. So ditch your usual weekend routine and check out one of the events below…or all of them! The choice is yours this Super Bowl Sunday!!

Friday, January 1st

Night of Ideas

Location: National History Museum

Join the Consulate General of France in at the National History Museum this Friday for Night of Ideas Los Angeles. The evening will include engaging lectures, live musical and dance performances, readings and art installations.

Breakup Bar Pop-up

Location: Severance Wine Bar, Melrose

While there us still plenty of time for you to snag a date before Valentines Day, celebrate your singleness at the Breakup Bar Popup. Hosted by the Severance Wine Bra, this limited engagement event is the ultimate anti-valentines day. Enjoy breakup appropriate movie screenings, a Wall of Broken Relationships, and a bounty of themed cocktails and bites. Bring your friends or even your date for a trip down memory lane, or at least some pre-V-day fun.

Rare Books L.A.

Location: Pasadena Convention Center

Let your inner bookworm roam free this weekend as Rare Books L.A. comes tot he Pasadena Convention Center. I know your asking, what does this event have that my local bookstore doesn’t? Well for starters, in LA bookstores are nearly extinct. Aside from that new-age fact, Rare Books LA brings you literary treasure from around the world. The fair will feature one hundred of the finest specialist in antiquarian books, fine prints, photography, and ephemera form the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

2019 Japanese Food Expo

Location: Hilton Los Angeles, Universal City

The 2019 Japanese Food Expo comes to Universal City this Saturday. The event will feature food, sake, and travel exhibits from 50+ exhibitors.  Whether you just love eating Japanese food or want to be the Japanese food guru among your friends, this is the event for you!

L.A. Cookie Con & Sweets Show

Location: Anaheim Convention Center

Two food events in one weekend?! We know the choice is hard so leave it up to your palette to decide. If your feeling something on the sweeter side, this is the event for you. Enjoy baking demos and workshops, celebrity chefs and hundreds of samples all day long. Can’t make it on Saturday? No worries, this is a two day event, so these delicious treats will be awaiting you Sunday as well. Now you don’t have to chose which food event to do!

Family Concert: Up! Up! And Away!

Location: Long Beach Performing Arts Center

A musical afternoon with a full symphonic performance from Long Beach Symphony celebrating things that fly. From bumblebees to birds, kites to magic carpets, dragons to aliens, and superheroes to starships, it’ll be endless fun! Enjoy an afternoon of interactive musical activities, face painting, sing-alongs, conducting, dancing, and MORE!

The Pickwick Vintage Show

Location: Pickwick Gardens, Burbank

Featuring over 65 exhibitors from across Southern California, the Pickwick Vintage show will feature collections of one-of-a-kind vintage clothing, jewelry, and accessories, textiles, inspiration, and findings. The event invites all collectors, connoisseurs, the design community, and fashionistas to check out the showcase of goodies spanning all eras. Super Vegan Sunday

Location: Row DTLA

Super Vegan Sunday! Try to say that three times fast. And after your done with that, don’t miss this foodie approved 2nd annual event. Vegan Street Fair, Eat Drink Vegan, and Smorgasburg LA join forces and transform into a vegan food haven. Not vegan? Don’t worry… Smorgasburg LA will not be going 100% vegan for the day. Smorgasburg LA is always the perfect place for everyone and anyone to grab a bite, and Super Vegan Sunday will be no exception, with your favorite vendors serving vegan and non-vegan options all day long!

City Lights at Skyspace

If you haven’t been to Downtown LA’s sky-high attraction–Skyspace, their Friday night soiree is the perfect opportunity for a visit! From 1,000 feet above the sea of lights enjoy a dance party in the clouds. On the 69th and 70th floor you’ll enjoy premium sounds, entertainment and even a ride on the outdoor glass “Skyslide”.

A Night of French Short Films

Culture yourself with a night of Parisian cinema. Showcasing a variety of stories, the screening is a selection of short films nominated for a 2019 Cesars(French Oscars). Digital Color by Renowned Photographer Ralph Gibson

Opening this weekend and extended through February 24, Digital Color pays tribute to the milestone 80th birthday of renowned photographer Ralph Gibson. The exhibit will be presented by Leica Gallery Los Angeles with a series of captivating digital pieces taken by Gibson.

Music: Los Angeles Piano and Wind

The Best Deals for Dine L.A. Week

Don’t miss out on some of the best dishes available during LA’s favorite bi-annual restaurant event. Dine L.A. will be gone before you know it and so will these amazing opportunities to try the best in cuisine the city has to offer!

Ma’am Sir

Silverlake

The relatively-new upscale-Filipino spot was one of our picks for the best new restaurants of 2018 thanks to chef Charles Olalia, who first made a name for himself at the no-frills Rice Bar downtown before expanding into this beautifully designed date-friendly Silverlake location. For DineLA, they’re doing a 3-course dinner for $39 that includes a glass of wine.

Another best-new-restaurant pick, this steakhouse from Jimmy Kimmel’s best pal/BBQ expert Adam Perry Lang’s part of DineLA’s new “exclusive” series, which highlights some of LA’s most high-end spots. It’s worth it here, though: there’s a room especially for dry-aged steaks below the restaurant, and Lang puts intense amounts of care into each cut. The steakhouse’s special menu is a $115 five-courser — pricey, but a huge savings on their traditional dinners.

Fundamental LA/Fundamental DTLA

Westwood/Downtown

The beloved casual mini-chain has locations in both Westwood and Downtown that are great for a quick lunch or a more sit-down-y dinner. Though they’ve got a four-course for $39 option in the evening, Stacey’s pick is for their great lunch deal: $15 gets you a sandwich or salad, a side, and a dessert or a drink.

Eight Korean BBQ

Koreatown

This KBBQ restaurant is known for eight different flavors of pork belly, which usually sets you back $60 — but during DineLA’s, the special menu here drops 4 flavors of pork belly, seafood and soybean stew, and mozzarella fried rice for $39.

Superfine Pizza

Downtown

This new-ish pizza spot’s from the chef behind beloved Italian restaurants Rossoblu and Sotto; here he’s using his deep Italian know-how for thin-crustiness that draws from both the NYC and Neapolitan styles of pie. For DineLA, he’s slinging whole pies with a salad and two drinks for $29, a crazy-good deal for a couple on a casual date-night.

Lawry’s

Beverly Hills

The beloved steakhouse is known for tableside service and old-school hospitality in totally Grandma-friendly digs — in keeping with that trend, the special menu is intent on filling you up for DineLA with BOTH a lobster tail and prime rib (!!). You also get their famous spinning salad, a side, and a dessert for $59 all-in.

Hip Hot

Monterey Park

A Jonathan Gold favorite (of course), this SGV Sichuan spot’s known for their spiciness — in fact, Mr. Gold called said their crab is stir-fried with “ungodly amounts of chiles and szechuan peppers.” If you’re into the heat, though, during DineLA, for $29, you’re getting an app, an entree, soup, dessert, and a coconut water to chill out your palate in between bites.

When Dominique Ansel — the inventor of the cronut and other sweet goodies — opened up his first full-service restaurant last year, the food world took a collective breath: Could he pull off savory as well? The answer’s a resounding yes, although the desserts are still the star of the show to many; at DineLA you’ll get to try ‘em both, since the $49 deal includes three courses (plus coffee!)

The Bellwether

Studio City

Ted Hopson’s bistro-ish spot in Studio City was one of the, uh, bellwethers of the Valley’s emergence as a dining destination. He’s going for broke with their deal, with eight choices on their DineLA menu and patrons picking any three for a $39 dinner: Options include wagyu steak tartare, meatballs, and the cheeseburger.

Fishing With Dynamite

Manhattan Beach

David LeFevre’s tiny seafood spot has been a long-standing neighborhood standby, thanks to its quaint charm and — more importantly — LeFevre’s penchant for getting the best seafood in town, all the time. The raw bar platter’s the longtime favorite, and it’s one of the offerings during DineLA as part of a four-course menu that also includes a glass of bubbly for $59 — a totally ridiculous deal.

Viale Dei Romani

West Hollywood

James Beard-nominated chef Casey Lane’s been an LA favorite for years thanks to Venice’s beloved Mediterranean spot Tasting Kitchen; his new Viale Dei Romani at the La Peer hotel has a gorgeous firepit-abetted courtyard and beautifully plated dishes. The lunch is the go-to for DineLA, but come hungry because $35 gets you four courses: a starter, a pasta, a protein, and dessert.
