AT&T Set to Launch Satellite-to-Smartphone Service Soon
AST SpaceMobile has been demonstrating voice, text, and video calls via satellite using 4G LTE and 5G, achieving download speeds of 14Mbps. The company has now finalized a commercial agreement with AT&T to develop a space-based broadband network, aligning with the upcoming launch of AST’s first five commercial satellites this summer. The FCC is creating a framework to support such services, aiming for seamless connectivity everywhere. With Apple and Android already incorporating satellite features, and Starlink testing similar links, dead zones may soon be eliminated.
Netflix’s Ad-Supported Tier Reaches 40 Million Users
Netflix’s ad-supported model has gained traction, reaching 40 million monthly users globally, up from 23 million earlier this year. At its 2024 upfront presentation, Netflix announced plans to launch an in-house advertising technology platform. More than 40 percent of new users in regions with ads are opting for the ad-supported tier. Netflix also expanded its advertising partnerships to include Google, The Trade Desk, and Magnite, alongside its initial partner, Microsoft. Additionally, Netflix is pushing further into live events, including streaming NFL games and weekly WWE broadcasts.
Airbus Unveils Racer Hybrid Aircraft to the Public
Airbus has introduced the Racer, a hybrid aircraft combining elements of a helicopter and an airplane, designed to expedite emergency response times. The Racer features wings, forward-facing rotors, and top helicopter blades, allowing it to take off vertically and land smoothly without a runway. This demonstration model was showcased in Marseille, France, as part of the Clean Sky 2 project, which aims to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20% compared to conventional aircraft. The Racer had its first flight in April and meets the project’s environmental goals.
Google Enhances In-Car Infotainment with New Apps
Google is adding new apps to its in-car infotainment platforms, including streaming services Max and Peacock, which will be available in cars from Renault, Polestar, and Volvo. Additionally, the Angry Birds game will be accessible while parked. For Android Auto, the Uber app will soon be available, aiding drivers with trip management and navigation. Google is also introducing a casting feature with Rivian, allowing video content to be cast from phones to the car’s display while parked. These updates aim to enhance in-car entertainment and convenience.
Uber Launches New Mobility Services and Features
Uber has announced new products at its annual Go-Get conference, including Uber Shuttle for airports and concerts, and scheduled carpool trips. The service, Uber Shuttle will be coming soon to select cities. Likewise, this allows customers to book seats on shuttle buses via the Uber app, with fares being a fraction of regular rides. The company has partnered with Live Nation and Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium for these services. Additionally, UberX Share now offers scheduled rides up to 30 days in advance. Other updates include Uber One memberships for students and new Uber Eats perks for Costco members.
Instagram Co-Founder Mike Krieger Joins Anthropic as Chief Product Officer
Anthropic has appointed Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger as its new chief product officer. Krieger, previously working on the AI news-reading app Artifact, will lead Anthropic’s product initiatives. The company, founded by ex-OpenAI employees, aims to transform its core technology into market-ready products, including the recently launched Claude app for iOS and support for multiple languages. Anthropic has raised nearly $8 billion and has significant investors like Amazon and Google, positioning it to compete in the rapidly evolving AI industry.
