Amazon Gives the Kindle Lineup a Colorful Refresh

A new round of updates is bringing slimmer designs, faster performance, fresh colors, and long-requested accessories to Amazon’s Kindle family. The base Kindle, Paperwhite, and Colorsoft are now about a millimeter thinner and can open books up to 30 percent faster, while aluminum versions add a more premium finish and twice the storage of their plastic counterparts. Amazon has also moved the power button to the side and introduced user-replaceable batteries across the lineup. Perhaps the biggest treat for longtime Kindle fans is a $79.99 magnetic case for select Signature Edition models that adds physical page-turn buttons, along with a $34.99 Bluetooth Kindle Click remote. The base Kindle starts at $149.99, while the updated Paperwhite and Colorsoft models arrive October 28.
Huawei Turns Its Latest Smartphone Into a Serious Camera

Photography is becoming an even bigger selling point for Huawei with an ambitious accessory designed for the Mate 90 Pro Max. The Ruiying Z10 is a detachable 24–240mm zoom lens that includes its own 50-megapixel, one-inch-type image sensor rather than simply relying on the cameras already built into the phone. With a variable f/2.0 to f/4.5 aperture, the system effectively transforms a compatible Mate 90 into something closer to a compact interchangeable-lens camera. The accessory weighs 346 grams and attaches directly to select Mate 90 models, although its roughly $895 price is higher than some flagship smartphones. Huawei’s experiment shows just how far phone makers are willing to go as computational photography and traditional camera hardware continue to overlap.
Amazon Makes the Fire TV Stick 4K Easier to Set Up

One of the more annoying parts of setting up a streaming device may be disappearing with Amazon’s latest Fire TV Stick 4K. The $59.99 stick can now draw power directly from a television’s USB port instead of requiring a separate wall adapter. It also runs Amazon’s refreshed TV operating system and supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and Bluetooth Low Energy. At the same time, Amazon is simplifying the broader lineup, leaving the Fire TV Stick HD, Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Stick 4K Max, and Fire TV Cube as its primary streaming devices. A redesigned $14.99 Fire TV Remote with a new shape and more tactile controls will follow in late October.
DoorDash Wants Dinner to Be as Easy as Sending a Text

Ordering food could soon feel more like messaging a friend, thanks to a new AI-powered DoorDash experience now in testing. Users will eventually be able to request a specific meal, ask for a recommendation, or simply say something like “order my usual,” after which DoorDash’s AI can suggest a cart and handle checkout inside the message thread. The feature is still in preview, with U.S. iPhone users able to join a waitlist for the beta. DoorDash is also preparing drone delivery tests in Northern California, where early trials suggest eligible restaurant orders could reach customers in about five minutes. Starting in November, its retail return service will expand nationwide, allowing customers to pay $7.99 for a Dasher to pick up an eligible item and return it to a local store.
Apple’s Long-Rumored HomePad Could Arrive This Month

A major smart home push may finally be on the horizon, with Apple reportedly preparing to unveil a new display device on October 13. Widely referred to as the HomePad, the six-inch smart home hub is expected to work either on a countertop or mounted to a wall, with Apple’s revamped Siri AI positioned at the center of the experience. The tabletop version reportedly uses a rounded metal base with speakers and microphones, paired with a tilting screen that recalls the design of Apple’s classic iMac G4. Expected features include smart home controls, video calls, music, photo slideshows, intercom functions, and facial and voice recognition for personalized experiences. Apple is also reportedly preparing a new HomePod mini and upgraded Apple TV for the same launch, potentially making this one of the company’s biggest smart home expansions to date.
OpenAI Launches an Always-On AI Assistant Called Dots

A new type of autonomous assistant is pushing OpenAI further beyond the traditional chatbot experience. Powered by the company’s GPT-6 Astra model, Dots are designed to complete tasks across connected apps even when a user is not actively interacting with them. Each Dots device receives its own cloud computer with access to a web browser and more than 4,000 supported applications. Users can communicate with their Dots device through ChatGPT, voice calls, Microsoft Teams, or Slack, while the assistant sends progress updates and questions as it works. OpenAI says Dots can tackle jobs ranging from analyzing customer feedback and testing software updates to reviewing interviews, identifying video clips, and drafting social media posts, setting up a more direct competition with Meta’s increasingly agentic Muse assistant.
Polaroid Adds Creative Effects Without Going Digital

Analog photography is getting a playful upgrade with Polaroid’s new Mod instant camera, which adds several creative shooting modes without relying on post-production editing. A dial surrounding the lens switches between four in-camera effects: Double Exposure, Split Shot, Light Painting, and Motion Freeze. The modes let photographers layer multiple images, divide a frame between two exposures, capture trails of light, or combine intentional motion blur with a sharply flashed subject. The $169.99 camera works with both i-Type and 600 film and includes separate standard and portrait lenses, along with a front dial for adjusting exposure brightness. With instant and retro-style cameras continuing to attract photographers looking for a break from smartphone perfection, the Mod turns unpredictability into part of the appeal.
