Economic Update | Week Ending November 18, 2023

Stock markets closed higher for the third consecutive week – Stock markets closed higher again this week capping off a third week of gains following a tough October. The October Consumer Price Index (CPI) was released this week. It showed that consumer prices in October had climbed 3.2% from one year earlier. While the Fed target is 2%, this was a giant step in the right direction. Inflation peaked in June 2022 at 9.1% and worked its way down every month for a year hitting 3% in June. In July, August, and September the year-over-year inflation rate worked its way back up. It was 3.7% in September, so dropping to 3.2% in October was welcome news to investors. The Producer Price Index showed inflation taming as well in October. Bond yields and mortgage rates have fallen steadily in November on this news and many experts feel that rising inflation, higher interest rates, and Fed hikes are behind us. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the week at 34,947.28, up 1.9% from 34,283.10 last week. It is up 5.4% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the week at 4,514.02, up 2.2% from 4,415.24 last week. It is up 17.6% year-to-date. The Nasdaq closed the week at 14,125.48, up 2.4% from 13,798.11 last week. It is up 35% year-to-date.

U.S. Treasury bond yields – The 10-year treasury bond closed the week yielding 4.44%, down from 4.61% last week. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the week at 4.59%, down from 4.73% last week. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates follow bond yields.

Mortgage rates – The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that mortgage rates for the most popular loan products as of November 9, 2023, were as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.44%, down from 7.50% last week. The 15-year fixed was 6.76%, down from 6.81% last week. Rates dropped all week.

California existing-home sales – The California Association of Realtors reported that existing-home sales totaled 241,710 units on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis in October, down 11.9% from a revised 274,410 annualized sales pace in October 2022. October marked the thirteenth straight month of the annualized sales rate dropping under 300,000 on an annualized basis, and the second consecutive month of sales dropping below 250,000 annualized sales, a level that was thought could never happen. Year-to-date, the number of homes sold were down 27.2% in October. The statewide median price paid for a home in October was $840,360, up 5.3% from a revised $798,140 a year ago. There was a 2.7-month supply of homes for sale in October, down from a 3.1-month supply one year ago.

The graph below shows sales data by county in Southern California.

Google Unveils Titan Security Keys for a Password-Free Future

Google has released two new versions of its Titan Security Key, designed to complement the emerging passwordless passkey technology supported by major players like Apple, Microsoft, and Google. Available now in the Google Store, these keys come in USB-C ($35) and USB-A ($30) variants, both featuring NFC for wireless connection to mobile devices. The reviewer has tested the USB-C version, finding it on par with other keys, including older Titan models and Yubico’s FIDO2 keys. The convenience of NFC in both models eliminates the need to choose between them and supports the recommendation of having at least two keys for backup purposes. These keys are not only FIDO2 compatible for two-factor authentication with existing services but also have the capacity to store over 250 unique passkeys. They offer a more secure alternative to other two-factor methods like code generators and push notifications by using cryptography for verification. This ensures the authenticity of the key and protects against fake websites. Users can register these keys with various online accounts for passwordless authentication, requiring only the key connection and a user-set PIN.

SpaceX Receives Green Light for Another Starship and Super Heavy Test Launch

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved the second test flight of SpaceX’s Starship rocket, confirming that SpaceX has met all necessary safety, environmental, policy, and financial responsibility requirements. Originally scheduled for November 17th, Elon Musk announced a slight delay, moving the test to November 18th with a two-hour launch window beginning at 8 AM ET. This follows an investigation into the first orbital launch test of the Starship and Super Heavy booster in April, which ended in self-destruction after about four minutes due to a propellant leak from the Super Heavy booster that disrupted the connection with the flight computer, as explained in SpaceX’s September report.

Apple Announces RCS Support for iPhones Coming in 2024

Apple has announced that starting in 2024, iPhones will support RCS messaging. Likewise, the standard is predominantly used by Android phones, potentially easing the longstanding friction between iPhone and Android messaging. According to a 9to5Mac report, an Apple spokesperson stated that integrating RCS Universal Profile, as defined by the GSM Association, would improve interoperability over traditional SMS or MMS. This addition is expected to enable features like read receipts and typing indicators. However, this change does not signify Apple opening up iMessage to other platforms. RCS messaging will serve as a replacement for SMS and MMS, existing separately from iMessage. Despite Apple’s plans to appeal against certain EU regulations, tech giants like Google and Samsung have been advocating for Apple’s RCS support.

Meta Unveils Upcoming AI-Driven Editing Features for Facebook and Instagram

Meta is set to enhance Facebook and Instagram with innovative AI-powered creative tools. The feature enables users to edit photos and generate “high-quality videos.” Announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, these tools are developed using Emu, Meta’s foundational model for image generation. “Emu Edit” allows Meta users to modify images with text inputs. Users can do so without manually selecting the image portion or having professional editing skills. It focuses on precise changes relevant to the edit request. The second Meta tool, “Emu Video,” can create videos from text prompts or reference images. Although not completely realistic, these videos represent a significant improvement over previous Meta animations.

Taylor Swift Fans Set New Data Usage Records During the Eras Tour

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has had a significant cultural and technological impact, notably in terms of data usage. During her three-day stint at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, fans used a colossal 28.9 terabytes of data. This set a new record for the most data transferred during any event at the stadium this year. To put this into perspective, 1TB of data equals roughly 200,000 photos or 400 hours of video. Other Swift tour stops saw similarly high figures, with 23TB in Nashville, 12TB in Atlanta, and 8.6TB in Tampa. This trend underscores the extensive photo and video-sharing activity among Swift’s fans during her concerts.

Weekly Economic Update | Week Ending November 11, 2023

California third quarter housing affordability – The California Association of Realtors released their housing affordability index. It included that single-family detached-home affordability dropped to 15% in the third quarter of 2023, down from 16% in the second quarter and down from  18% one year ago. An income of $221,200 was needed to qualify for the monthly payment of $5,530 on a $843,600 median priced home.  Affordability for a condo or townhome dropped to 23% in the third quarter. An income of $170,400 was needed to qualify for the $4,200 payment to purchase a $650,000 median-price condo or townhome.

Stock markets posted another week of gains. Although there was not much economic news this week, stocks continued their November bounce after a tough October. The only day that markets did not advance was on Thursday after Fed Chairman Powell stated at a press conference that the Fed remained open to further rate increases. Investors felt that Fed comments after last week’s meeting meant that the Fed may be holding rates where they are, the highest levels in 22 years,  to give them time to cool the economy. Stocks bounced back again on Friday. The latest consumer confidence report was released this week. It showed consumer confidence had slipped. That would be good news on the inflation front, as lower consumer confidence could slow consumer spending. Oil prices also continued to drop, which is also good news when looking at inflation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the week at 34,283.10, up 0.7% from 34,061.32 last week. It is up 3.4% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the week at 4,415.24, up 1.8% from 4,338.34 last week.  It is up 15% year-to-date. The Nasdaq closed the week at 13,798.11, up 2.4% from 13,478.28 last week. It is up 31.8% year-to-date.

U.S. Treasury bond yields – The 10-year treasury bond closed the week yielding 4.61%, up slightly from 4.57% last week. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the week at 4.73%, down slightly from 4.77% last week. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates follow bond yields.

Mortgage rates – The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that mortgage rates for the most popular loan products as of November 9, 2023, were as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.50%, up from 7.76% last week. The 15-year fixed was 6.81%, up from 7.03% last week. Rates dropped all week. Next week’s rates should be closer to 7.5% on a 30-year fixed if the mortgage market remains where it was on Friday.

Real estate sales figures for October closings will be released next week by the California Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. You can get that data now for your city or zip code at RodeoRe.com.

Happy Veterans day. We thank all Veterans for their service, and their families for their sacrifices. We are eternally grateful to you.

The improved app will be available to all users, whether free or Premium, across various smart TVs, gaming consoles, and streaming devices.

Weekly Economic Update | Week Ending November 4, 2023

Economic news this week was quite favorable. On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced that the U.S. would need to sell about $75 billion less than expected in bonds to fund the government debt. She also commented that the Treasury Department would issue mostly short-term bonds rather than long term bonds, signaling that the department expected long-term yields to drop, and the government did not want to be obligated to today’s rates for a long term.  On Wednesday the Fed left their key interest rates unchanged for a second straight month. Fed Chairman Powell’s comments were more optimistic about the future of inflationary pressures than they have been. On Thursday ADP, the largest payroll servicer in the world, forecasted that the jobs market slowed in October. Friday, the Bureau of Labor and Statictics released the official report. It showed that the number of new jobs created was ½ of the number of new jobs created in September and that the unemployment rate was rising, and wage growth was slowing. Additionally, there was a report that showed rental rates had dropped, manufacturing had slowed, unit labor costs had dropped, jobless claims increased, and the EU reported that their economy had slowed, and their inflation rate had dropped significantly. Investors looking for signs that the economy was finally slowing finally got data to support that it is.  Both bond yields and mortgage rates dropped significantly which led to the best one-week stock market rally this year. Mortgage rates hit a 23-year high in October when the 30-year mortgage rate hit 8.25%. Recent data has reversed that trend. On Friday, the 30-year mortgage rate was 7.5%. Treasury bond yields also dropped sharply this week. The 10-year treasury bond yield topped 5% just 10 days ago but closed the week at 4.57%.

Job growth cooled in October – The Department of Labor and Statistics reported that 150,000 new full-time jobs were added in October. That was about ½ of the revised 297,000 created in September.  The unemployment rate increased to 3.9% in October, up from 3.8% in September. Average hourly wages increased 4.1% year-over-year, the smallest year-over-year increase in over a year.

Stock markets surged in their best week of the year – The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the week at 34,061.32, up 5.1% from 32,417.59 last week. It is up 2.8% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the week at 4,338.34, up 5.4% from 4,117.37 last week.  It is up 13% year-to-date. The Nasdaq closed the week at 13,478.28, up 6.7% from 12,634.01 last week. It is up 28.8% year-to-date.

U.S. Treasury bond yields – The 10-year treasury bond closed the week yielding 4.57%, down from 4.84% last week. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the week at 4.77%, down from 5.03% last week. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates follow bond yields.

Mortgage rates – The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that mortgage rates for the most popular loan products as of November 2, 2023, were as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.76%, up from 7.79% last week. The 15-year fixed was 7.03%, up from 7.03% last week. Rates dropped all week. Next week’s rates should be closer to 7.5% on a 30-year fixed if the mortgage market remains where it was on Friday.

Have a great weekend!

Stay connected in the world of tech and media! Plug into this week’s top headlines from Facebook Reels to the new Apple iMac. Read on below for our weekly round-up!

Facebook Allows Creators to Experiment with Multiple Versions of Reels

Facebook is introducing new tools for creators, the most significant being a Reels A/B testing feature. A/B testing, a prevalent marketing method, allows content variations to be compared for engagement levels. With this tool, creators can test up to four different thumbnails and captions for a single Reel. Different versions will be shown to distinct audience segments for 30 minutes, with the most viewed version becoming the default unless manually changed. Currently, mobile-exclusive, future enhancements may include AI-generated captions and thumbnails. Additionally, creators can manage their content more efficiently with a professional dashboard, displaying post performance and offering options like hiding or deleting posts. Furthermore, Facebook has extended content performance data from 28 to 90 days and added metrics such as relative Reel performance, viewer retention, and replay counts.

Nomad’s latest iPad folios reintroduce the classic leather feel

Nomad has released new leather folio cases for iPad Air and iPad Pro. While Apple has moved away from leather, Nomad is embracing it with designs similar to Apple’s Smart Folio but with a leather finish. These cases attach magnetically, automatically wake/sleep the iPad, and can be folded for landscape orientation. They also have a microfiber interior for screen protection. The Plus model, costing an additional $10, has a magnetic flap for the Apple Pencil. Available in black or brown, they fit various iPad sizes. However, these cases offer limited protection, no portrait support, and minimal grip enhancements. They’re also pricier, starting at $120 for the 11-inch size. While they feature strong magnets and are easy to use, there are cheaper alternatives on the market with similar or better features.

Apple unveils a faster M3 iMac

Apple has unveiled a refreshed 24-inch iMac at its “Scary Fast” event, introducing the new M3 chip, which is reportedly twice as fast as the previous M1 version. The M3 chip boasts an eight-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU, with options for up to 24GB RAM and 2TB storage. This upgrade promises to increase the speed of productivity apps by up to 30% and significantly enhance the performance for creative tasks. However, the iMac design remains unchanged, retaining the same seven colors, slim profile, white bezels, 1080p camera, speakers, USB configurations, and 4.5K Retina display. The new iMac incorporates more recycled materials, including 100% recycled aluminum for its stand and recycled components internally. This update was anticipated, as Apple skipped the M2 chip for the iMac. The M3 iMac is priced starting at $1,299 for the eight-core GPU variant, with preorders available now and shipping set for November 7th.

Google is simplifying the shopping experience with small businesses

Google is rolling out new Shopping features to support small businesses. Merchants can now use a “small business” label, making it easier for consumers to identify local or smaller-scale shops. This label will be visible in Google Maps. Likewise, products from these businesses will have a “small business” tag in Google Search. This feature is currently available to US-based retailers using Google’s Merchant Center, Business Profile, and the Google & YouTube shopping app on Shopify. Google will automatically assign this attribute to certain listings based on various factors like web traffic and product range. However, larger businesses won’t be able to use this label. Google is depending on businesses to self-identify, and only authorized individuals can enable this setting. There is no clarification on measures against potential misuse of the label.

Netflix’s new ad-supported tier offers ad-free episodes as a perk for frequent viewers

Netflix is introducing a feature to enhance the binge-watching experience for its ad-supported tier subscribers. Starting next year, after viewing three consecutive episodes, the next episode will be ad-free. This move aims to retain viewers and increase engagement. Since its inception a year ago, Netflix’s ad-supported plan has gained 15 million monthly users, showcasing its growing appeal. With the recent price increase, Netflix is promoting its $6.99-per-month ad-supported plan, which has been profitable.
