2023 MICHELIN One Star Inductees

Aphotic (San Francisco; Seafood): This seafood haven, named after the ocean’s shadowy depths, offers a rich pescatarian tasting menu curated by Chef Peter Hemsley. The restaurant champions sustainable practices, sourcing exceptional seafood from local purveyors and making skillful use of techniques like dry aging and fermentation.

Auro (Calistoga; Contemporary cuisine): Located in the Four Seasons resort, Auro serves up the essence of classic Wine Country fine dining. Chef Rogelio Garcia’s Californian perspective shines through his use of exceptional locally-sourced ingredients, including those from the resort’s own gardens.

Chez Noir (Carmel-By-The-Sea; Contemporary cuisine): In a Craftsman-style residence, Chef Jonny and his wife, Monique Black, offer a warmly inviting dining experience. Chez Noir’s menu draws on French bistro fare and California’s coastal abundance, with seafood dishes making quite the splash.

Aphotic (San Francisco; Seafood): Their sustainable ethos involves sourcing seafood directly from fishermen and trusted partners around the Bay Area.

Heritage (Long Beach; Californian cuisine): Heritage’s commitment to sustainability includes growing their own produce and sourcing local, sustainable meat and seafood.

Pomet (Oakland; Californian cuisine): Pomet boasts a farm-to-table approach. It does so by sourcing from a family-owned farm and using wood from retired trees in their oven.

Providence (Los Angeles; Seafood): With a strong dedication to sustainability, Providence only uses wild-caught, sustainable products. Additionally, it operates a zero-waste chocolate program.

Bib Gourmand

This year, the MICHELIN Guide inspectors added 10 more names to the Bib Gourmand list. The list recognizes eateries that offer great food at excellent value. This includes Bansang, Bombera, Carnes Asadas Pancho Lopez, Cobi’s, Eat Joy Food, Mabel’s Gone Fishing, Maligne, Petiscos, Snail Bar, and Villa’s Tacos.

AWS Prepares to Drive AI Agents Capable of Managing Mundane Tasks Beyond Mere Conversations

Amazon launched Agents for Bedrock at the AWS Summit in New York, a service that allows companies to build AI applications capable of autonomously completing tasks like booking flights, not just providing information. Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of Data and Machine Learning at AWS, believes this will streamline the development process for builders and allow them to customize the data used by the models. Instead of only making suggestions, AI agents could combine user data, flight schedules, and booking capabilities to autonomously plan trips for users. Though not directly involved in the generative AI race like Meta, Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft, Amazon, through AWS, positions itself as a critical infrastructure provider in the AI field. Agents for Bedrock targets startups and enterprises, enabling the use of proprietary data to instruct foundational models and develop task-completing applications.

 

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Receives a Significant Upgrade to Its Compact Display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has been officially launched, potentially challenging Motorola Razr Plus’ position as the top flip phone. The Z Flip 5 boasts a larger 3.4-inch cover screen compared to its predecessor’s 1.9-inch display, a redesigned hinge for a complete flat close, a Samsung-tuned Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and a base model storage of 256GB. Reddit Experiments with ‘Official’ Profile Tags and Enhances App Compatibility with Screen Readers

Reddit is piloting a new “Official” label feature to authenticate accounts and enhance transparency across the platform. Currently, the feature is available to a small number of profiles from organizations with established relationships with Reddit and is only visible on Reddit’s iOS and Android apps. In parallel, Reddit is working on accessibility improvements for its mobile apps, making them compatible with screen readers. This move follows recent protests against Reddit’s API pricing due to a lack of accessibility features in the official apps, which led to some third-party apps shutting down. In response, Reddit has exempted certain accessibility-focused apps from the API pricing, initiated upgrades for moderators, and invited mods to an Accessibility Feedback Group.

The hand-tracking enhancement aims to deliver an experience closer to using controllers, showcased through Meta’s Move Fast demo app. Meta’s live captions, aiming to improve accessibility for the hard of hearing or Deaf, will be available in Meta Quest TV, Explore, and the Meta Quest Store, with potential expansion to other experiences in the future. Lastly, the popular feature of live streaming from Quest headsets to Facebook removed two years ago, will be reinstated, rolling out gradually as per the company’s announcement.

Netflix to Focus on ‘Sports-Related’ Content Over Live Sports Streaming

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has indicated that the company is unlikely to venture into live sports streaming for now, focusing instead on ‘sports-adjacent’ content. Sarandos explained in Netflix’s second-quarter earnings call that the company can cater to sports fans without the economic complexities associated with live sports licensing. The success of titles like “Quarterback” and “Tour de France: Unchained” has shown that storytelling can introduce new audiences to long-established sports. While Netflix is planning its first live sports event – a celebrity golf tournament – in November, it’s more of a promotional strategy for sports brands rather than a shift toward streaming live sports, unlike other tech giants like Google and Apple.

 

Leaked Specifications Suggest a Larger Display and Thinner Bezels for Galaxy Watch 6

New information on the new Galaxy Watch 6 suggests it will feature a larger screen due to slimmer bezels. The leak indicates the 40mm Watch 6 may have a 1.31-inch OLED display. The 44mm version would have a 1.47-inch OLED display. This implies a potential upgrade from the 1.2-inch and 1.4-inch displays of its predecessor, the Galaxy Watch 5. The Watch 6 models might also feature sapphire crystal glass displays for enhanced durability. The watch could also sport an Exynos W930 chip, 16GB of storage, and 2GB of RAM. Other potential changes include the reintroduction of a physical rotating bezel and larger batteries.

The vintage virtual pet website Neopets is gearing up for a makeover, aiming to reinvigorate its user experience. The team responsible for the site, which launched in 1999, still enjoys close to a million monthly active users. Cut to 2203, and the company has formed an independent company and is promising a “new era” for the platform. Law emphasized the platform’s aim to create a cohesive and enriched experience for users. Likewise, they will do so by unifying various Neopets projects that have been operating in isolation.

Likewise, there is also an opportunity to play lotería, a game like bingo, which will be held at Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center in Newbury Park. Parking is free.
