Anthropic Enhances Claude Chatbot, Rivaling OpenAI’s Capabilities

Anthropic, a Google-backed AI startup founded by ex-OpenAI engineers, has upgraded its Claude chatbot to Claude 2.1, setting a new industry standard. The update allows Pro tier users to process up to 200,000 tokens at once, equivalent to over 500 pages, doubling Claude’s previous capacity and surpassing GPT-4’s 32,000-token limit. This enhancement enables Claude to analyze extensive materials like entire codebases or lengthy texts. Additionally, Claude’s accuracy has improved, with a 50% reduction in hallucinations or inaccuracies. The chatbot now incorporates customizable tools for web searches and calculations and supports custom, persistent instructions. A new feature mimics ChatGPT’s functionality, allowing Claude to choose the best API tool for given tasks based on context. Anthropic has also updated its developer console, adding a test window for new prompts and the capability for users to tailor Claude’s responses and personality.

Sonos Set to Launch an Array of New Products in 2024, Including Headphones and a Set-Top Box

Sonos is set to release a range of new products in 2024, including its first headphones, potentially debuting in April and priced between $400 and $500, and wireless earbuds. The company also plans to enter the TV streaming device market by late 2024 or early 2025, alongside updates to existing products like the Sonos Roam Bluetooth speaker. These initiatives aim to boost Sonos’ hardware revenue following a downturn in 2023. Despite recent job cuts, Sonos is focusing on its long-term strategy to encourage existing customers to update and expand their Sonos systems, while facing the challenge of standing out in the competitive audio and streaming device markets.

CoinDesk Acquired by Bullish Crypto Exchange

CoinDesk, a leading cryptocurrency news site, has been acquired by Bullish, a crypto exchange led by former New York Stock Exchange president Tom Farley, in an all-cash deal. This acquisition, following financial difficulties at CoinDesk’s parent company, Digital Currency Group (DCG), due to the FTX collapse, won’t change CoinDesk’s current management. The site will operate as an independent subsidiary under Bullish, with plans to launch an editorial committee headed by ex-Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Matt Murray. DCG, which bought CoinDesk in 2016 for $500,000, faced issues after its subsidiary Genesis got entangled in FTX’s downfall, leading to legal battles. Barry Silbert, DCG’s founder, hailed CoinDesk as one of their best investments. Despite layoffs in August, Bullish aims to fund CoinDesk’s growth initiatives. Additionally, Bullish is reportedly considering purchasing remnants of FTX, indicating a potential resurgence of the beleaguered exchange.

Bluesky, Twitter’s Decentralized Spinoff, Reaches 2 Million User Milestone

Bluesky, a decentralized Twitter competitor Twitter, has reached a milestone of 2 million users. The platform, still in its invite-only phase, will launch a public web interface by the end of the month. Likewise, this would make the app more appealing, especially to journalists and others who currently can’t view links without signing in. Bluesky, built on the AT Protocol, plans to introduce federation early next year, allowing users to post through various providers rather than a single central platform, similar to how Mastodon operates. The company has also been enhancing user experience with new features like mobile push notifications, email verification, and accessibility improvements, including better alt text.

Economic Update | Week Ending November 18, 2023

Stock markets closed higher for the third consecutive week – Stock markets closed higher again this week capping off a third week of gains following a tough October. The October Consumer Price Index (CPI) was released this week. It showed that consumer prices in October had climbed 3.2% from one year earlier. While the Fed target is 2%, this was a giant step in the right direction. Inflation peaked in June 2022 at 9.1% and worked its way down every month for a year hitting 3% in June. In July, August, and September the year-over-year inflation rate worked its way back up. It was 3.7% in September, so dropping to 3.2% in October was welcome news to investors. The Producer Price Index showed inflation taming as well in October. Bond yields and mortgage rates have fallen steadily in November on this news and many experts feel that rising inflation, higher interest rates, and Fed hikes are behind us. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the week at 34,947.28, up 1.9% from 34,283.10 last week. It is up 5.4% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the week at 4,514.02, up 2.2% from 4,415.24 last week. It is up 17.6% year-to-date. The Nasdaq closed the week at 14,125.48, up 2.4% from 13,798.11 last week. It is up 35% year-to-date.

U.S. Treasury bond yields – The 10-year treasury bond closed the week yielding 4.44%, down from 4.61% last week. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the week at 4.59%, down from 4.73% last week. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates follow bond yields.

Mortgage rates – The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that mortgage rates for the most popular loan products as of November 9, 2023, were as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.44%, down from 7.50% last week. The 15-year fixed was 6.76%, down from 6.81% last week. Rates dropped all week.

California existing-home sales – The California Association of Realtors reported that existing-home sales totaled 241,710 units on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis in October, down 11.9% from a revised 274,410 annualized sales pace in October 2022. October marked the thirteenth straight month of the annualized sales rate dropping under 300,000 on an annualized basis, and the second consecutive month of sales dropping below 250,000 annualized sales, a level that was thought could never happen. Year-to-date, the number of homes sold were down 27.2% in October. The statewide median price paid for a home in October was $840,360, up 5.3% from a revised $798,140 a year ago. There was a 2.7-month supply of homes for sale in October, down from a 3.1-month supply one year ago.

The graph below shows sales data by county in Southern California.

Google Unveils Titan Security Keys for a Password-Free Future

Google has released two new versions of its Titan Security Key, designed to complement the emerging passwordless passkey technology supported by major players like Apple, Microsoft, and Google. Available now in the Google Store, these keys come in USB-C ($35) and USB-A ($30) variants, both featuring NFC for wireless connection to mobile devices. The reviewer has tested the USB-C version, finding it on par with other keys, including older Titan models and Yubico’s FIDO2 keys. The convenience of NFC in both models eliminates the need to choose between them and supports the recommendation of having at least two keys for backup purposes. These keys are not only FIDO2 compatible for two-factor authentication with existing services but also have the capacity to store over 250 unique passkeys. They offer a more secure alternative to other two-factor methods like code generators and push notifications by using cryptography for verification. This ensures the authenticity of the key and protects against fake websites. Users can register these keys with various online accounts for passwordless authentication, requiring only the key connection and a user-set PIN.

SpaceX Receives Green Light for Another Starship and Super Heavy Test Launch

Originally scheduled for November 17th, Elon Musk announced a slight delay, moving the test to November 18th with a two-hour launch window beginning at 8 AM ET. This follows an investigation into the first orbital launch test of the Starship and Super Heavy booster in April, which ended in self-destruction after about four minutes due to a propellant leak from the Super Heavy booster that disrupted the connection with the flight computer, as explained in SpaceX’s September report.

Apple Announces RCS Support for iPhones Coming in 2024

Apple has announced that starting in 2024, iPhones will support RCS messaging. Likewise, the standard is predominantly used by Android phones, potentially easing the longstanding friction between iPhone and Android messaging. According to a 9to5Mac report, an Apple spokesperson stated that integrating RCS Universal Profile, as defined by the GSM Association, would improve interoperability over traditional SMS or MMS. This addition is expected to enable features like read receipts and typing indicators. However, this change does not signify Apple opening up iMessage to other platforms. RCS messaging will serve as a replacement for SMS and MMS, existing separately from iMessage. Despite Apple’s plans to appeal against certain EU regulations, tech giants like Google and Samsung have been advocating for Apple’s RCS support.

Weekly Economic Update | Week Ending November 11, 2023

California third quarter housing affordability – The California Association of Realtors released their housing affordability index. It included that single-family detached-home affordability dropped to 15% in the third quarter of 2023, down from 16% in the second quarter and down from  18% one year ago. An income of $221,200 was needed to qualify for the monthly payment of $5,530 on a $843,600 median priced home.  Affordability for a condo or townhome dropped to 23% in the third quarter. An income of $170,400 was needed to qualify for the $4,200 payment to purchase a $650,000 median-price condo or townhome.

Stock markets posted another week of gains. Although there was not much economic news this week, stocks continued their November bounce after a tough October. The only day that markets did not advance was on Thursday after Fed Chairman Powell stated at a press conference that the Fed remained open to further rate increases. Investors felt that Fed comments after last week’s meeting meant that the Fed may be holding rates where they are, the highest levels in 22 years,  to give them time to cool the economy. Stocks bounced back again on Friday. The latest consumer confidence report was released this week. It showed consumer confidence had slipped. That would be good news on the inflation front, as lower consumer confidence could slow consumer spending. Oil prices also continued to drop, which is also good news when looking at inflation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the week at 34,283.10, up 0.7% from 34,061.32 last week. It is up 3.4% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the week at 4,415.24, up 1.8% from 4,338.34 last week.  It is up 15% year-to-date. The Nasdaq closed the week at 13,798.11, up 2.4% from 13,478.28 last week. It is up 31.8% year-to-date.

U.S. Treasury bond yields – The 10-year treasury bond closed the week yielding 4.61%, up slightly from 4.57% last week. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the week at 4.73%, down slightly from 4.77% last week. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates follow bond yields.

Mortgage rates – The Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported that mortgage rates for the most popular loan products as of November 9, 2023, were as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.50%, up from 7.76% last week. The 15-year fixed was 6.81%, up from 7.03% last week. Rates dropped all week. Next week’s rates should be closer to 7.5% on a 30-year fixed if the mortgage market remains where it was on Friday.

Real estate sales figures for October closings will be released next week by the California Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. You can get that data now for your city or zip code at RodeoRe.com.

Happy Veterans day. We thank all Veterans for their service, and their families for their sacrifices. We are eternally grateful to you.

Amazon Expands Fresh Grocery Delivery Service to Include Non-Prime Members

Amazon is extending its Fresh grocery delivery service to non-Prime members across all US states and towns where Fresh grocery stores are present. While this expansion doesn’t cover the entire nation, it is a step toward wider availability. Non-Prime members will need to pay delivery fees, unlike Prime members who enjoy free deliveries over a certain spending threshold. Additionally, Amazon is rolling out its redesigned Fresh store in Chicago and plans to introduce it in the Los Angeles area. However, the company’s other physical store ventures have faced closures in recent times.

Aliro: Pioneering the Next Generation of Intelligent Locks and Electronic Key Solutions

Tech giants Apple, Google, and Samsung are collaborating with lock manufacturers like Allegion and Assa Abloy, and chip producers such as Qualcomm and NXP, to establish an open standard for smart locks and digital keys through a platform called Aliro. Set to launch on Thursday, Aliro aims to facilitate the use of smartphones or smartwatches as keys to unlock doors, much like Apple’s Home Key technology. However, the actual implementation details are still in the works, with the first specification expected by early 2025. The Connectivity Standards Alliance, which includes over 200 companies, is overseeing the development of Aliro. This initiative seeks to create a universal protocol that would allow any authorized device to interact with any smart lock, promoting seamless access across different settings. The project, originally named the Access Control Working Group, began in late 2021 and involves notable industry players.

From an Open AI Wearable to a Spotify Revamp and More

Humane has officially launched the AI Pin, a $699 wearable device that comes with a magnetic square and a battery pack. The AI Pin, which requires a $24 monthly subscription for a phone number and data via T-Mobile, is expected to ship in early 2024 with preorders starting on November 16th. It operates on a Snapdragon processor and combines voice control, a camera, gestures, and a built-in projector for interaction. The camera captures 13-megapixel photos and will support video recording after a future update. The Pin, weighing about 54 grams in total, is designed to manually activate and signal when data collection is happening. Its main function is to use AI models, with a highlight on ChatGPT access as a core feature, and its Cosmos OS aims to streamline user interaction by routing queries without the need for managing apps.

Spotify Revamps TV Application to Mirror Smartphone Usability

From an Open AI Wearable to a Spotify Revamp and More

Spotify is updating its TV app to enhance user experience, making it more intuitive and similar to its mobile and desktop versions. The new design features a homepage that prioritizes users’ favorite content and playlists, including ‘Made For You’ selections and recently played items. Additionally, the app introduces a playback queue accessible from the screen’s right side, displaying current and upcoming tracks. A newly integrated dark mode and a simplified account-switching option enhance visual comfort and ease of use. This overhaul aims to reduce the need for controlling Spotify via phone by offering more seamless navigation on TV. The improved app will be available to all users, whether free or Premium, across various smart TVs, gaming consoles, and streaming devices.

Airbnb is finally adding support for smart locks to its app

Airbnb is rolling out an update that adds smart lock integration to its app, allowing for automatic door code generation for easier guest access and host management, initially available to selected hosts in the US and Canada. Enhancements also include sorted and detailed review listings, a “Guest Favorites” category for top-rated homes, and AI-assisted photo organization for listings. Upcoming features will offer transparent fee communication, simplified co-host payouts, competitive pricing tools, and a comprehensive earnings dashboard for hosts, with some changes already live and others slated for next year.
