American Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker

Where: DTLA

What: is there anything more timeless during the holiday season than catching a performance of The Nutcracker? See the American Ballet Theatre as they return to SoCal for their production of this Christmas classic. The show will feature larger-than-life scenery, a Christmas tree, and sets and costumes designed by Tony Award-winner Richard Hudson.

Holiday Ice Rink Pershing Square

Where: Pershing Square | DTLA

What: If you are in search of a winter wonderland, then make your way to DTLA’s Pershing Square. The downtown park has been transformed into a holiday wonder with a skating rink amongst the city’s skyscrapers. Skate rentals are included in admission, though lockers and skating aids cost a few dollars extra.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Experience

When: Until December 23 

Where: Melrose

What: Get in on the mystery that’s afoot in Knives Out second installment Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. This escape room-like experience inspired by the new Rian Johnson film is full of fun and games. Try your hand at solving a series of challenges and put your detective skills to the task. The experience (held at 8175 Melrose Avenue) is free, but you’ll need to book a coveted reservation.

‘The Nutcracker’

What: If you don’t feel like heading downtown for a performance of ‘The Nutcracker’, the L.A. Ballet will be taking the stage in Westwood. See this beloved show as it tours from Glendale to Hollywood and now the Westside, backed by an orchestra.

Astra Lumina

What: Stroll through a garden illuminated by celestial-inspired lights during this year-end event at South Coast Botanic Garden. Astra Lumina will set up about an hour-long nighttime trail through the Palos Verdes garden, with eight starry installations along the way.

Justin Roiland: Debut

What: Rick and Morty co-creator (and titular voice actor) Justin Roiland debuts his stellar work for all to see. View stunning acrylic-on-canvas paintings of his colorful, familiar characters during this UTA Artist Space exhibition.

What: Ventura Harbor celebrates the season with its 46th Annual Holiday Parade of Lights.

The two-day fun-filled event includes a carnival, seaside shopping, and dining, followed by the lighted boat parade at 6:30 pm. Parking and admission are free. 

20th Annual Chanukah Celebration and Chocolate Gelt Menorah Lighting

What: The Nutcracker kicks off its limited run at the Walt Disney Concert Hall this weekend. Tchaikovsky’s composition gets the attention it deserves—with a bit of a contemporary twist. Gustavo Dudamel will lead the LA Phil in selections from The Nutcracker, as well as Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington’s swinging, brassy take on the score. Likewise, a full-scale stage production is not included.

Blockbuster Pop-Up Bar

Where: Fairfax District 

What: It’s time for a throwback! Reminisce the move rentals days at a limited-time themed Blockbuster speakeasy. Each $45 ticket includes two cocktails (non-alcoholic options available), with a drinks menu that draws names and flavors from the turn of the millennium ( i.e., Gushers and Capri Sun). Babies! at the Aquarium of the Pacific

What: Miniature sea jellies and tiny aquatic cuteness is what you’ll find at the Aquarium of the Pacific’s new “Babies!” exhibition. Joan Didion: What She Means

Where: Hammer Museum

What: This November, see more than 200 works of art to sketch a portrait of the late literary icon Joan Didion. The Hammer Museum exhibition represents periods of her life in places like the Central Valley in the postwar period or New York circa 1960. Featured artists include Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Noah Purifoy, Ed Ruscha, Betye Saar, and more than 50 others.

72nd Annual Santa Paula Christmas Parade

What: The 72nd Annual Santa Paula Christmas Parade returns Saturday, November 26, 2022, at 6:30 pm. The family-friendly parade will feature marching bands, toy soldiers, floats, automobiles, equestrians, and community groups, and Santa Claus will be part of the festivities. The 72nd running of the Santa Paula Holiday Parade will be headlined by Deaf Santa Claus, who is traveling directly from the North Pole to participate in the holiday festivities. This year’s parade theme is “A Celebration for All.”

Make your way to the beloved Scottish pub Tam O’Shanter in Atwater Village. The pub rang in its 100th anniversary, and it’s celebrating Thanksgiving with one of the best à la carte holiday dinner menus in town. For $34, you will get a traditional turkey dinner plate, or you can upgrade for a bit more for their standard cuts of tender prime rib. 

 

San Laurel at the Conrad

Location: DTLA

Internationally acclaimed chef José Andrés’s new fine dining restaurant at the Conrad in Downtown L.A. ushers in its first Thanksgiving. San Laurel’s prix-fixe menu incorporates Spanish influences into a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Enjoy dishes like persimmons with creamy stracciatella cheese, Marcona almonds, and pomegranate seeds. Of course, there will be traditional roast turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and gravy on the menu. Guests can make a reservation for $140 per person.

Westside and Beach Communities Thanksgiving 2022

Playa Provisions

Location: Playa del Rey

Head to Brooke Williamson’s beachside eatery, Playa Provisions, for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. The Top Chef alum’s Turkey Day spread this year includes a beer-brined turkey with all the fixings and a slice of pumpkin pie. The bonus? Guests can cozy up to the outdoor fir pit for pre or post-meal casual seating. Reservations for Playa Provisions are available for $68 per person.

Stroll over to Santa Monica this year for a Thanksgiving 2022 feast at FIG, the Fairmont Miramar’s lobby restaurant. Specializing in seasonal Californian cuisine, new head chef Damon Gordon is offering a traditional four-course Thanksgiving menu. Start with roasted chestnut and apple soup before the main course of a traditional Turkey with spiced citrus cranberry compote. Lastly, finish off with fig tart with local honey and yogurt sorbet in lieu of your usual pie, all for the ore-fixe price of $89 per person.

 

Etta

Location: Culver City

This upscale Culver City restaurant is offering a generous holiday spread complete with Etta’s signature “picnic” take on roast turkey and a champagne toast to kick off your meal. Start with roasted brussels sprouts, bubbling shrimp, and ragu pasta before the turkeys even roll out. This year, the $95 per person meal includes confit turkey breast and thighs, melted leek and mushroom stuffing, potato purée, charred sweet potatoes, and black truffle dinner rolls. After all, that, enjoy pear and cranberry cobbler or dessert.

San Fernando Valley Thanksgiving 2022

Wood & Water

Location: Sherman Oaks

Indulgence is the norm at Wood & Water, so there should be no surprise that the Thanksgiving 2022 selection is just as decadent. Start off with a hearty and delicious Butternut Squash soup before taking your pick of entrees like traditional Turkey, Panko, and Dijon Crusted Rack of Lamb or Rosemary Roasted Prime Rib. 

 

Castaway

Location: Burbank

This special occasion go-to in the Valley will offer a four-course Thanksgiving brunch this year—think lobster eggs Benedict, chicken, and waffles and $30 bottomless mimosas. Castaway will also be open for dinner when the restaurant’s usual à la carte menu is offered. Those seeking to stop by for brunch can enjoy Castaway’s offering for $92 per adult and $35 per child. 

 

Bourbon Steak

Location: Glendale

A dine-in meal at celebrity chef Michael Mina’s Glendale steakhouse is always a sure bet at the holidays. This Thanksgiving, you’ll find an elegant $125 per person three-course dinner. The menu features the traditional—roasted turkey with cornbread and chestnut stuffing, and cranberry mostarda. For something less traditional, the salmon Wellington with sake beurre blanc and Mina’s signature lobster pot pie is equally superb. Each entrée comes with a choice of one side, with additional sides going for $14 apiece. Want to make it even classier? There are a number of high-ticket add-ons available, including caviar and a chilled seafood sampler.

Shaqtoberfest

What: Lakers legend, DJ, and haunted house MC Shaquille O’Neal is providing a hauntingly good time this October. Don’t miss Shaqtoberfest, which will take over the grounds outside of the Queen Mary from late September through Halloween. Ghostwalk in Santa Paula

What: GHOSTWALK is Ventura County’s original Halloween street theater presentation. Now in its 28th year, GhostWalk is presented in a different historic Santa Paula location each year. Flashlight in hand, walkers will be led along a route where they hear ghosts tell their tales of how they met their untimely ends. Some of the stories are true 

Nights of the Jack

Where: Santa Monica Mountains

What: The scenic King Gillette Ranch and Santa Monica Mountains will be illuminated once again this October for Nights of Jack. Enjoy an on-foot, mile-long trail with food trucks, a Spookeasy, trick-or-treating (October 28-31), and more. Timed tickets are required each night; expect to spend an hour to an hour and a half there.

Haunt’oween LA

When: September 30 – October 31

Where: Woodland Hills 

What: Hatched out of the hunger for car-friendly trick-or-treating options, this former Halloween drive-through is back again in Woodland Hills as an on-foot adventure. Haunt’oween will celebrate the spooky season with a walkthrough that features tons of pumpkins, a trick-or-treating–filled town, and an illuminated carnival, plus face painting, performances, games, and food trucks.
