Tech News: Uber Helicopter Service

Tech News: Uber Helicopter Service

Uber, the ride-hail company, launched a premium helicopter service in New York City. This service consists of 8-minute flights to John F. Kennedy Airport and Newark Airport from Downtown Manhattan. Uber intends to expand the service to more US cities. They will eventually offer this option to daily commuters who travel between different parts of the city.

This prestigious service is a reference to the premise Uber launched with a decade ago: offer a sleek and convenient transportation option to customers with too much disposable income so they can feel like “ballers” while traveling. This time, the question is whether Uber can convince the Wall Street crowd, near the helipad, to upgrade from a car to a chopper.

The cost is approximately $205 for a one-way Uber Helicopter flight from Manhattan to the JFK airport. It takes approximately 50 minutes to complete. That includes the fact that you need to take an Uber Black Car to get to the helicopter pad which could take from 10-20 minutes based on where you are being picked up in the city.

Considering above factors, it can take about the same amount of time to order an UberX and travel to the airport. 90% of the time, that will be more cost effective than the Uber Helicopter. As Uber expands its fleet of cars to scooters, bikes and now helicopters, it wants to give users more options for getting from one place to another. It envisions replacing helicopter trips with autonomous electric flying cars to make transportation faster and (in theory) safer. Under the Uber Air division, it’s working on a class of flying electric vehicles that can take off and land vertically. The company is expected to launch its first set of electric aircraft in Dallas, Los Angeles and Melbourne, Australia, in 2023.

Uber helicopters probably won’t help to reduce the traffic in big cities like LA or New York. However, they do add an interesting way of travel for people who are looking for a more sophisticated experience. The real highlight of the Uber Helicopter trip is the view of New York from above the city. There’s nothing more astounding than amazing view of your city!

LA Eats: Farm to Table Restaurants

Eating sustainably grown food is more than just a fad in California. Some of the best restaurants in the state are dedicated to the idea that the highest-quality ingredients are sourced locally. Indeed, some diners specifically choose to eat at restaurants that purchase the freshest local ingredients, discovering economic, social and environmental perks. Below is a list of 10 of the most respected and acclaimed farm-to-table restaurants across the Golden State.

Los Angeles:

Ostrich Farm – 1525 W. Sunset Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90026

Ostrich Farm is an intimate, 50-seat restaurant in Echo Park, run by husband and wife Jaime Turrey and Brooke Fruchtman. Much of the restaurant’s classic American heritage fare is cooked over a wood-fired grill and is often locally sourced, including some produce from the restaurant’s own garden.

Forage – 3823 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90026

This family owned restaurant sources from urban growers. They collaborate with home growers and aid them in obtaining their certification with the county, taking farm-to-table to a whole new level.

Salt’s Cure – 1155 N Highland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038

This sleek, modern spot only sources ingredients from California, all of which are butchered/crafted in house. All seafood is caught in the Pacific Ocean by local fishermen who exercise sustainable practices, and work within our coastal ecosystem. Produce is sourced directly from farmers and from the farmers’ markets around the Los Angeles area. Everything is house-made, in fact, from the ketchup to the bacon. A top pick for both sustainability, taste and craft.

Westside:

Malibu Farm – 23000 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

At Malibu Farm, the beautiful location at the Malibu Pier, you’ll find everything and everything is homegrown. The owner, Helene, used to grow everything in her own personal garden and back yard farm. Now, of course, with the popularity of her restaurant, that isn’t entirely possible, though the eggs, persimmons, figs, lemons, pomegranates, apricots, asian pears, carrots, beets, asparagus, and fresh herbs still come from her home. She buys local strawberries, oranges, kale, chard, basil and tomatoes from local purveyor Larry Thorne; organic lemons, we get lemons and oranges year round from Mike Zacha; all potatoes and carrots from Weiser farms; Tutti Fruitt; and Maggie’s farm. The chefs shop every week at the Santa Monica farmers market. All breads are local from La Brea bakery and Rockenwagner; coffee comes from nearby Caffe Luxxe; tea from Charles and Company; Jidori chicken is purchased locally; cheese is Pomona-made from De Stefano. Just, wow.

Gjelina – 1429 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA 90291

Roughly 90% of the fare served is from local farmer’s markets at Gjelina, Travis Lett’s always-packed hot spot on Abbot Kinney in Venice. Get there early, and plan what you want to eat. The bread is out of this world. Hot tip: the veggie pizza is to die for. Go go go!

Conejo and San Fernando Valley:

Fig & Sprig – 4774 Park Granada, Calabasas, CA 91302

A husband and wife team that focuses on farm to table and sustainable cuisine. Their goal is to treat guests like family and serve delicious food and beverages in a quaint atmosphere. At Fig & Sprig they focus on local, seasonal produce whenever possible and lovingly craft dishes to be healthful and delicious. They take pride in keeping our ingredients locally sourced, organic when possible and sustainable. They also have wonderful vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices for you to consider.

Farm Table – 6209 Van Nuys Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91401

Stop by for some quick and fresh fare! The modern rustic design of the restaurant pairs nicely with the farm to table status of the food. Perfect spot for a casual lunch with friends and family.

Out and About: LA Hiking Edition

From the famous Hollywood Sign to the Cave of Munits, LA has a large array of hikes varying in scale and assortment. With unique experiences like the abandoned Murphy Ranch featuring an endless looking staircase and graffiti architecture to the Bridge to Nowhere, showcasing bungee jumpers and river gold miners. No matter your taste or hiking abilities the city has more than enough options to keep up with your pace!

The Hollywood Sign Hike

Location: Lake Hollywood Park (3160 North Canyon Drive)

Don’t dismiss this hike as tourist rubbish. It’s a true local gem! For the full experience, you’ll want a solid shot in front and behind the sign. Start by parking your car for free at Lake Hollywood Park on Canyon Lake Drive. (You’ll see other cars parked along the side of the road.) Next, you want to hike straight up the hill the entire time, but stay to the left every time the road splits. You’ll see several signs saying not to drive up Mulholland Hwy. Stick to the left and walk up that street, you’re going the right way! You’ll first walk through the neighborhood which eventually turns into a dirt path, keep going until the dirt path ends and you reach the white wall entrance to Mt. Lee Summit. Go through the gate and up the small hill to the right and get the closest picture that is possible in front of the Hollywood Sign! For the full experience, walk back down the small hill and continue straight up the paved road (Mt. Lee Drive), to get to the summit behind the Hollywood Sign. It’s about a one-mile hike. Snap a pic at the top! Then take a moment to talk to other hikers who made it there. Locals and people from all around the world are inspired to take this hike. You’ll be sure to get inspired and meet some very interesting travelers!

Hike to the Cave of Munits

Location: El Escorpion Park

Are you looking for a hike that’s an action-packed adventure? Rarely does a 2.1-mile loop offer as much excitement as the hike to the Cave of Munits. You start by hiking up El Escorpion Trail, a wide dirt trail parting from a bend at the end of Vanowen Street in West Hills on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley. El Escorpion Trail (labeled Moore Canyon Road on Google maps) starts with head-on views of Castle Peak, before curving left to proceed west into the canyon below Castle Peak. Shade is scarce along the way, so be sure to wear sunscreen! Stay straight past several paths breaking off to the right (one of which will be your return route down from Castle Peak). No gear is necessary to get through the cave, just an adventurous spirit that will lead you out the top of the cave to a tough off-trail ascent to Castle Peak. The view at the top is a panoramic summit towering over the west end of the San Fernando Valley. The loop closes with a swift descent from the crown of jumbled rocks.

Point Dume Cove Trail Hike

Location: 1657 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401

Check out Point Dume Cove Trail for a family-friendly accessible hike! The trail offers that classic Malibu scenic overlook made famous by the final scene of the “Planet of the Apes” film, where the Statue of Liberty lay buried in the sand. Point Dume Cove Trail is a 1.4-mile moderate hike featuring beautiful wildflowers, sea lions on the rocks below, and rock climbers scaling Dume Point. A great trail for all skill levels but parking is limited to about 6-7 spots for 2 hours, so it’s best to do during the week to secure your parking spot.

Rustic Canyon to Murphy Ranch Park hike

Location: 1562 Casale Rd., Pacific Palisades 90272

This unique moderate 3.85-mile loop hike is to an abandoned building that was transformed into an artists’ colony in the 60’s and 70’s. You’ll pass through a creepy entrance gate, to a collapsed machine shed and garage leading to an endless looking staircase. Finally, you’ll arrive at a large concrete building covered in spray paint housing a robust diesel generator and fuel tank. Sound interesting? This hike begins at the residential end of Sullivan Ridge Fire Road, but the ruins may also be reached by hiking up Rustic Canyon from Will Rogers State Historic Park. From the street parking at the intersection of Capri Drive and Casale Road, begin by walking up Sullivan Ridge Fire Road towards the creepy gate about 0.4 miles from the start at the entrance of Topanga State Park. A gap in the chain-link fence on the left side of the road leads to the top of the endless-looking staircase heading down the steep wall of the canyon. Turn left here and begin the dizzying descent to Murphy Ranch.

Bridge to Nowhere in the San Gabriel Mountains hike

Location: Camp Bonita Road, San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, Azusa, CA 91702
Trailhead coordinates: 34.23696, -117.765119

Pass required: An easy-to-acquire wilderness permit is required, as well as a national forest day use pass. The permit is free and the day-use pass can be purchased at the ranger station.

For outdoor-loving Angelinos, the Bridge to Nowhere is a local treasure! This abandoned bridge is located on a washed-away road in the San Gabriel Mountains spans across the East Fork of the San Gabriel River. The Bridge to Nowhere is a strenuous 10-mile round trip hike with 900 feet of elevation change. The path snakes along the San Gabriel River, passing Shoemaker Canyon before veering right. The trail hangs left and cuts north at Laurel Gulch, followed by crisscrossing the river. Allison Gulch gives way to Rattlesnake Canyon, and ultimately, The Bridge to Nowhere, which lives up to its name. The bridge was built in 1936 to connect the San Gabriel Valley with Wrightwood, which is along the Angeles Crest Highway. Now the bridge remains an arched curiosity, attracting river gold miners, terrific swimming holes, and perhaps L.A. County’s most popular place to bungee jump!

Hike to Paradise Falls in Wildwood Park

Location: 928 West Avenida De Los Arboles, Wildwood Regional Park, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360

Trailhead coordinates: 34.2200, -118.9028

Who can say no to a waterfall? The photogenic water feature is the 40-foot-tall Paradise Falls, tucked into Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks. A roughly 2-mile hike to see the falls, the easiest route is to head straight west on Mesa Trail, the most obvious trail departing the parking area for Wildwood Park. Pass through a few junctions over the first 0.35 miles and turn left at a split onto North Tepee Trail, following an arrow for Paradise Falls. Paradise Falls plunges 40 feet into a large pool. Left of the waterfall is a rock grotto that looks alien to the surrounding landscape. Use stepping stones to cross through a line of cattails below the pool to get the best perspective of the Falls.

Home Tips: 3 Design Tips To Maximize A Small Space

Looking for ways to get creative with a small space in your home? Low on square footage and just want to find ways to make your space feel big? Don’t worry, we have some solutions for you!

Choose an ideal paint color

Being thoughtful in your paint choices is very important! Traditional colors like white, cream, and light gray are great choices and will instantly give the impression of more space. These colors will provide a clean look and will make your room feel more expansive.

You can also create a visual openness overhead by simply painting the ceiling white. You’ll have a welcoming space in no time!

In addition to the traditional colors, you can also go bold with dark colors. Highlight a small room by making a cozy-like environment with navy, black, and dark gray colors.

Get creative with storage

Small spaces hardly come with great storage. Creating clever storage solutions can help keep clutter out of sight. The kitchen is one place you can get clever with when it comes to storage. Hang wine glasses beneath your cupboards. Keep cleaning supplies out of sight by attaching holders to the backs of cabinet doors. Consider an adjustable cooking area with roll-away islands and pantries.

Consider multitasking furniture

When your floor space is limited, it’s important to choose furniture that have multiple functions. Consider pieces that have hidden storage or that you can store when not in use. For example, if you can’t fit a dresser in your bedroom, try adding crates under the bed for clothing. An ottoman is also a great piece that can easily transition to a bench or even a coffee table. Limited space doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. With creative solutions, you can go from a cramped space to an inviting space with room for all.

Tech News: What exactly is 5G?

There has been a lot of buzz around the release of 5G from many technology and cellular service companies. What exactly is 5G? Let’s break it down.

The fifth generation (5G) of mobile wireless communications promises to lower latency, offer greater stability, the ability to connect many more devices at once, and move more data thanks to faster speeds. These features have the potential to supercharge business, and that’s one of the reasons 66 percent of businesses plan to deploy 5G by 2020, according to a study by Gartner.

Basically, 5G takes advantage of higher-frequency bands in the radio spectrum that have a lot of capacity but shorter wavelengths. Cisco estimates that by 2020, 5G will generate three times more traffic than the average 4G connection, and those connections will make up 3 percent of total mobile connections. This means faster data on your smart phone.

Many industry experts believe that 5G networks alongside existing 4G LTE networks will be 10 to 20 times faster than 4G when fully deployed in the real world. Standalone 5G could reach gigabit-plus browsing speeds, making mobile internet as fast, if not faster, than hardwired fiber connections.

There is a catch… you will eventually need a 5G compatible phone. However, these phones should be able to switch between 4G and 5G to find the most stable service. Importantly, there will be more than faster Netflix downloads and 5G-compatible phones, businesses will also benefit.

Not only will 5G be instrumental for many industries, including retail, entertainment, automotive, manufacturing, and logistics, but it will also help speed up tech advancements. These advancements will enable connected cars and autonomous driving; smart cities with connected logistics, transport, and infrastructure; enhancement in connected healthcare from robotics to blockchain use cases to wearable telemetry; industrial internet of things and smart factories; and the more extended use of augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality.

5G technology could help businesses increase efficiency, production, and innovative breakthroughs as well as reduce costs. Unfortunately, Barclays’ polling found that only 28 percent of businesses understand 5G or the practical business possibilities it could offer. Now that you understand what 5G has to offer, you can help inform your peers who still have questions!
