L.A. River Fest

What: The Friends of the L.A. River hosts a film festival featuring short films about environmental justice and narratives focused on the L.A. River, showcasing the waterway’s relevance not only in large-scale productions but also in indie cinema. This signature event takes place at the L.A. State Historic Park, offering open-air screenings, a story slam, educational activities, food trucks, a DJ, and a variety of booths from local vendors and organizations, with free admission but ticket requirement.
Puppet Up! Uncensored

What: Henson Alternative brings a unique blend of puppetry and improvisation to the historic Jim Henson Company Lot in Hollywood, originally Charlie Chaplin’s studio. This lively event features a series of special performances, promising an entertaining and witty experience.
Limited Edition Barbie Cake at Sweet Lady Jane

Where: Melrose, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica
What: In honor of the premiere of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie on July 21, a renowned L.A. bakery is offering a Barbie pink ombré version of its signature Triple Berry Cake, inscribed with “She’s Everything. He’s Just Ken.” Pre-orders are available from July 14 to 21, with in-store pickups at the Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Melrose locations from July 21 to 23. Pricing for these special cakes starts at $72 for a 6-inch version and rises to $104 for a 9-inch cake.

Feline Frenzy Adoption Event

What: The Wallis Annenberg PetSpace in Playa Vista is aiming to secure loving homes for 50 kittens during a marathon adoption event on Saturday, July 22. Movies on the Roof

Where: Sherman Oaks
What: Experience a unique alfresco film series by grabbing a seat on the rooftop of Westfield Fashion Square’s parking garage. Throughout the summer, every Friday and Saturday, you can enjoy a variety of classic movies like Clueless, Top Gun: Maverick, The Sandlot, and many others. By purchasing tickets, you’ll also be supporting the meaningful cause of Hope the Mission, an organization dedicated to combating poverty, hunger, and homelessness. So, join in the fun while making a positive impact on the community.
Habitat Restoration Day
When: July 22
Where: 6100 Woodley Avenue
What: In partnership with the California Native Plant Society, volunteers are invited to participate in the removal of invasive mustard plants, understanding their adverse impact on the ecosystem and the importance of this activity in restoring California’s native habitat. The event concludes with guided, nature-filled walks around the Nature Reserve, led by the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society, with binoculars provided. NoHo Summer Nights – Amor Prohibido, Tribute to Selena

Conejo Valley Weekend Events | July 21 – July 23
X Games California 2023
Where: Ventura County

What: Having called Los Angeles home for much of the 2000s, the wheel-based sports extravaganza X Games makes a triumphant return to Southern California after a decade-long hiatus, with events set in San Diego, L.A., and a finals weekend in Ventura. Beyond the thrilling competitions ($60 for finals weekend), attendees can participate in X Fest, featuring an obstacle course, mini ramp, RC park, wave pool, and dedicated street courses for dirt bikes, motos, skateboards, and BMXs.
Moorpark College Theatre Arts Present “Cabaret”
When: Through August 6
Where: Moorpark College
What: “Cabaret,” set in a 1920’s Berlin nightclub, this compelling American musical combines dark humor and poignant themes of love, political intrigue, and intolerance. The musical features classic numbers like “Willkommen,” “Cabaret,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” and “Two Ladies.” Performances are hosted in the intimate setting of the Studio Theater at the Moorpark College Performing Arts Center, where seating is limited.
National Park Service to Host “Loteria Night”
When: July 22
Where: Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center
What: National Park Service rangers from Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA) will host “Loteria Night.” The evening celebrates Latino Conservation Week. The event is free and features family-friendly guided night hikes. Likewise, there is also an opportunity to play lotería, a game like bingo, which will be held at Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center in Newbury Park. Parking is free.
