IRS to Trial a Complimentary Online Tax Preparation Service Next Year

New Bipartisan Bill Proposes Mandatory Inclusion of AM Radio in Cars

A new bipartisan bill, the AM for Every Vehicle Act, proposes that automakers be required to continue including AM radio technology in their vehicles. The legislation was introduced in response to the growing trend of vehicles being produced without AM radio capabilities. If passed, the bill would direct the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to mandate that automakers include AM radios in their vehicles without any additional charges. Google Appears to Be Developing a Dashcam Functionality for Android Phones

Google seems to be developing an in-built dashcam recording feature for Android phones that can function for up to 24 hours. According to screenshots taken by 9to5Google, an update to the Personal Safety app for Android revealed this feature, seemingly part of an internal test unintentionally uploaded to Google Play. The proposed app would use compressed video to conserve space, enabling users to navigate other apps while recording continues. GIFs Can Now Dominate Instagram Comments

Instagram users can now enhance their comments with GIFs. The feature is sourced from Giphy’s library. The new tool can be accessed via a GIF button beside the comment typing box. Along with GIF comments, Meta is also introducing new editing features for Instagram Reels. The feature enables users to split videos, modify clip speed, and non-destructively replace clips in the timeline.

After creating four generations of modular smartphones, Fairphone is extending its repairability expertise to the world of headphones with the launch of Fairbuds XL. These over-ear wireless noise-canceling headphones are designed for easy repairability. Likewise, the headphones are more sustainable and can be replaced when they wear out over time. Currently available in European markets, these headphones uphold Fairphone’s commitment to sustainability and repairability. Fairbuds XL offers a solid 26-hour battery life with noise cancellation activated. In addition, controls are managed through a joystick on the right earcup, adjacent to a USB-C port. A date for U.S. sales has not yet been released.

Google to Use Millions of Andriod Devices for Find My Device Feature

Google is upgrading its Find My Device platform. The change will align it more closely with location-tracking solutions like those provided by Apple and Tile. Announced by Google’s Sameer Samat at the I/O 2023 keynote, the updated service will soon support the tracking of headphones, earbuds, tablets, and more. The revamped system will leverage a network of billions of Android devices worldwide, enabling them to ping your misplaced gadget and accurately locate it. Notably, third-party companies like Tile and Chipolo will also participate in this updated program. 

Twitter Introduces Paid Access to Encrypted Direct Messages

Twitter has released details about its new encrypted direct messages feature, which will require users to pay for access. This service will be available to subscribers of Twitter Blue, verified organizations, and their affiliates. Both participants must use the latest Twitter app, and the recipient must have prior interaction with the sender. The encrypted messaging interface will feature a lock toggle and icon, distinguishing it from regular DMs.

Disney Plans to Integrate Hulu Content into Disney Plus with Increase for Ad-Free Subscriptions

Disney is planning to merge Hulu and Disney Plus into a single streaming application. The Dinsye+ – Hulu change would increase the price of its ad-free plan, currently, $10.99 per month, announced CEO Bob Iger during the company’s Q2 earnings call. The decision aims to provide a “one-app experience” in the US. Likewise, this offers better advertising opportunities and more streamlined content access for bundle subscribers. Iger said the upcoming price hike for the ad-free tier reflects the value of their content offerings.

Users can manage the system via the Roku Smart Home app or opt for 24/7 professional monitoring through Noonlight at an additional cost. 

Etsy Now Offers Wedding Registry Options for Couples

Starting today, Etsy, the platform renowned for its handmade and vintage items, has introduced a wedding registry feature. This addition allows couples to curate a unique list of bespoke or personalized gifts, including custom items where they can specify details such as names, colors, or designs. Sellers will recognize registry orders through a specific badge and will handle them as they would any other order. Guests will need to create an Etsy account to purchase gifts from the registry. Given Etsy’s range of products, from custom bridal party gifts to wedding decor, this move towards wedding registries seems a natural progression for the platform.
