Top Spring Museum Exhibits | Out & About

Southern California is lucky to be home to a wide variety of museums to appeal to different tastes. Think you’ve seen all of the region’s top museums? Thanks to temporary exhibits there is always plenty more art to see. Here are some of the best spring museum exhibits to enjoy around SoCal.

Wake Me When I’m Free

Hosted at The Canvas at L.A. LIVE, the Wake Me When I’m Free exhibit is dedicated to the late rapper, Tupac Shakur. The bold immersive exhibit takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the rapper’s life, including his music, activism, and art. Personal effects and poetry are also on display for the first time. The exhibit is not recommended for those under 14 years old.

Mapping Fiction

On display until May 2022, Mapping Fiction is a fascinating collection of maps from fictitious worlds. See a detailed depiction of Middle-earth from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. In addition, there is a representation of Dublin from James Joyce’s century-old Ulysses. You can also feast your eyes on maps from Treasure Island and Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. For even more sci-fi, check out the hand-drawn maps created by Octavia E. Butler for her science-fiction works. You’ll find this exhibit at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens.

Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia

A top SoCal exhibit for anyone interested in history, archaeology, and distant lands, the Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia showcases more than 100 ancient artifacts from the stunning Khmer-era complex of Angkor. While the area is most famous for the incredible temple of Angkor Wat, the complex is actually home to numerous once-glorious temple ruins. Offered in partnership with the National Museum of Cambodia, visitors can travel back in time at the California Science Center.

Hayao Miyazaki

Hosted at The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the Hayao Miyazaki exhibit takes visitors behind the scenes of the globally renowned Studio Ghibli. Discover more about one of the Academy’s top spring exhibits where the works of the famous filmmaker and artists are on display. Likewise, you’ll see art from movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Spirited Away. The first such exhibition in North America, it includes details of Miyazaki’s early career, film posters, immersive installations, film screenings in both English and Japanese, and more.

Matthew Thomas: Enlightenment

One of the top spring exhibits is happening at the California African American Museum (CAAM). Matthew Thomas: Enlightenment serves as a must-see for art fans. His bold and striking artworks combine vibrant colors, spiritual elements, religious symbolism, and geometric patterns, resulting in eye-catching abstract creations. The pieces are strongly inspired by Eastern ideologies and beliefs.

Norman Rockwell in the 1940s: A View of the American Homefront

Between early March and early October, the Norman Rockwell in the 1940s: A View of the American Homefront remembers those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Held at Catalina Museum for Art and History, located on Catalina Island, the exhibition falls over the 80th anniversary of the island’s role in World War Two. Travel back to the time of a nation at war as you view emotive images and advertisements from the past.

Black American Portraits

What: See it before it’s gone! The stunning display of 140 works of art centered on Black Americans closes out this Sunday. The LACMA exhibit showcases works inspired by various periods of Black history.

Odd Nights at the Autry

Where: Autry Museum | Griffith Park

What: The monthly night market at Griffith park’s Autry Museum returns for a showcase of unique finds. Head to Odd Nights at the Autry for live music, beer gardens, gourmet food trucks, and a slew of vendors. In addition, the night market also features a dance party, cocktail lounge, face painting, and more!

Beethoven’s Fidelio with Dudamel and Deaf West Theatre

When: April 14 – April 16, 2022

Where: Walt Disney Concert Hall | DTLA

What: Join Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil alongside Deaf West Theatre weekend. This semi-staged production of Beethoven’s only opera was created for both deaf and hearing audiences.

Nothin’ But Sand Cleanup

When: April 16

Where: Downtown Santa Monica

What: Healthy the Bat invites you to join them this Saturday for a beach cleanup at Santa Monica Pier. The event will likely bring up to 600 volunteers with 2-3 hours of cleanup. Likewise, volunteers are expected to bring their own bucket, gloves, mask, and water bottle to help ensure the event is zero waste.

April Movie Nights on the Lawn

When: April 17

Where: Jamaica Bay Inn | Marina del Rey

What: Settle in for a movie night at the Jamaica Bay Inn in Marina del Rey. The free outdoor movie on the Inn’s lawn will be screening Pitch Perfect this Sunday. Seating is first come first serve with drinks, snacks, and treats available for purchase. Patrons should also bring their own low chairs, blankets, and pillows in case the Inn’s chairs are unavailable.

Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival

Where: Disneyland | Anaheim

What: Running through April, head to the happiest place on earth for Disneyland’s annual Food & Wine Festival. The massive event takes over California Adventure for a delightful culinary experience.

Celebrate Earth Day at The Shops at Sportsmen’s Lodge

Where: The Shops at Sportsmen’s Lodge | Studio City

Live Music at the Simi Valley Town Center

When: April 15 

Where: Simi Valley Town Center | Simi Valley

What: Enjoy Simi Valley Town Center’s free spring concert series during the months of April and May 2022. In addition, live music will also be accompanied by a farmers’ market on Fridays from 4-8 pm and a makers market on Saturdays from 4-8 pm.

Ahmanson Trails 12K/6K Trail Runs in West Hills

When: April 16

Where: 25000 Victory Blvd, West Hills

What: Run don’t walk to the link provided to register for this Saturday’s Ahmanson Trails 12K/6K. The run will start at the Victory Trailhead in West Hills. In addition, the Ahmanson Trails 12K and 6K runs will take you through the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon open space.

Easter Eggstravaganza Event in Camarillo

When: April 16, 2022

Where: Community Center Park | Camarillo

What: Enjoy crafts, Easter Bunny visits, food trucks, and fun at this Saturday’s Easter Eggstravaganza. Presented by the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District the event is free and open to the public. In addition to the bunny, there will also be live music, craft vendors, and an inflatable obstacle course.

SoCal’s Biggest Music Festivals Happening this Spring & Summer | Out & About

Music festivals are a great way to spend a leisurely fun-filled day (or longer!), and SoCal is lucky to have a great lineup of spring and summer festivals to choose between. There are those that are suitable for families and others that are great for adult groups of friends and couples to cut loose and enjoy the beats. Catering to diverse musical tastes, these are some of the best music festivals scheduled for the next few months in Southern California.

Coachella

Dress to impress and enter the desert in April to experience the epic adventure that is Coachella. Held over two weekends, the vibrant event is one of the state’s oldest art and music festivals. Each weekend promises three days of excitement and fun camping. A cool place for friends, it features massive art installations, food, and drink stalls, and a great vibe.

And that’s before you even consider the eclectic lineup of musical acts, with big names and up-and-coming performers from across a wide variety of genres. For 2022, acts include Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, Big Sean, and more. In addition, Fatboy Slim, Carly Rae Jepson, and Maneskin are just a few more names gracing the concert’s stages.

Stagecoach

Another April highlight, Stagecoach is known for being one of the best country music festivals out there. With acts like Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood, Luke Combs, Lee Brice, Cody Jinks, and Midland taking to the stages, it’s an all but guaranteed two days of fun. The festival falls on the last weekend of April / the first weekend of May.

Brea Summer Festival

A May highlight in Orange County, Brea Summer Festival features an array of cool events throughout the daytime, while night times bring lively concerts. Held over three days, the concerts are completely free to enjoy.

Doheny Blues Festival

Doheny Blues Festival is widely accepted as one of the best blues music festivals in the entire country. The annual event happens at Doheny Beach each May. Three stages offer continuous music, and attendees will also find food, drinks, games, and a large selection of vendors.

Oxnard Salsa Festival

Spanning two days in July, Oxnard Salsa Festival is a must-visit for fans of all things salsa. Dynamic music and dancing are highlights, along with deliciously spicy food. Likewise, people travel from far and wide to enjoy the invigorating spirit of salsa.

Hard Summer Music Festival

A San Bernardino staple for more than ten years, the three-day Hard Summer Music Festival attracts ravers of all ages and fans of heart-pumping EDM tunes and R&B beats. Scheduled for July 2022, the full lineup is yet to be announced. It’s a strictly over-18s event and a photo ID is required.

Dance Camera West Film Festival

What: At Dance Camera West you’ll have a chance to celebrate the human form. The two-part event will feature 13 programs of dance films at the Theatre Raymond Kabbaz.

First Fridays at the Natural History Museum

When: March 4-July 1, 2022

Where: USC/Exposition Park

What: First Fridays are back at the Natural History Museum. Enjoy Dino’s and DJs every month from March through July at this KCRW-presented evening of music. Every month will offer a different lineup of musical guests and DJs, guided tours, and scientist-led talks.

Phyllida Barlow. Glimpse

When: Until May 8, 2022

Where: Downtown Arts District

What: Art fans of Phyllida Barlow can see the British artist’s work on display at Hauser & Wirth’s courtyard now through May. This site-specific monumental installation is part of an indoor-outdoor presentation of new large-scale works from the sculptor.

Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival

Where: Disneyland | Anaheim

You might find cauliflower ceviche at one booth, and ham-and-cheese pinwheels with smoked pistachios at another. Either way it’s a fun weekend event you wont want to miss.

What: At this annual celebration of the short story, Hollywood talent comes together to bring classic and contemporary literary works to life. For this year’s theme, there will be a focus on stories of cooperation, unexpected encounters, and competing desires. In addition, actors like Nate Corddry, Helen Hong, Tony Hale, and more will be on hand to recite the work of writers like Anton Chekhov and others. 

626 Night Market

Street Food Cinema Presents ‘LaLaLand’

Out & About: The Best Places to Go Camping in SoCal

Southern California not only has a fascinating history, interesting filming locations, beautiful beaches, and amazing weather, it’s also home to some of the most incredible parks to go camping. Below are some of our recommendations.

San Onofre Campground and State Beach

You’ll be spoilt for choice as they have 175 sites available for visitors. It’s excellent for those with luxurious recreational vehicles and guess what, you have direct access to one of the best-surfing sites in California that is San Onofre Surf Beach. If you prefer tents, they also have campgrounds that cater exclusively to tents. The park also has a 1.5-mile nature trail that connects to Trestles Beach. San Onofre State Beach is one of the top five most visited parks in California — you can go kayaking too and may even see dolphins, sea lions, and whales!

Malibu Creek State Park

Located just one hour from Los Angeles, Malibu Creek State Park boasts 15 miles of beautiful trails with stunning canyon vistas. The park is pet-friendly but pets are only allowed in the campgrounds and on paved roads. The scenic views of Malibu Canyon and Las Virgenes Valley surely will take your breath away. Activities that you can do at Malibu Creek State Park include horseback riding, fishing, bird watching, rock climbing, and mountain climbing.

Joshua Tree National Park

If you’re after the views, you won’t be disappointed at Joshua Tree National Park. The camping site is simply magical with its ancient trees, leisurely drives, and colorful wildflowers. You can even do stargazing at the camping site! If you’re visiting, please make sure that you arrive early as they are on a first-come, first-served basis. Consider booking a luxurious accommodation at the park and try some great restaurants. Sacred Sands offers one studio and a suite with views of the expansive desert.

Leo Carillo State Park

Just one hour and 20 minutes away from Los Angeles is Leo Carillo State Park that’s home to more than 130 campsites. It’s an excellent choice if you love the beach — you have direct access to it and you can swim all you want. If you love water sports, you can go surfing, windsurfing, and swimming. And don’t forget to go snorkeling and explore their colorful reefs. Visitors that love to hike have the option to try easy trails, moderate and hard. Also, don’t forget your pets — Leo Carillo State Park is dog friendly.

Green Valley Campground at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park

Do you want to camp with your family? Then this popular campground just an hour west of San Diego, California is the best site. It’s home to about 80 sites with many swimming areas. You can also go hiking on the beautiful trails. If you have an RV, they have a place for it too. This campground is an ideal place if you want to stay away from the higher temperatures of a SoCal Summer.
