RuPaul’s DragCon

Where: South Park

What: RuPaul’s DragCon returns for this annual intersection of culture, couture, and diversity. Make your way to south park for the colossal convention from drag juggernaut RuPaul. Meet queens, pop culture personalities, and previous RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants—plus an appearance by RuPaul.

Getty 25 Festivals

When: May 14 – August 28 

Where: Inglewood

What: In celebration of the Getty Center’s 25th birthday, the city will be treated to a series of free festivals across L.A. On most weekends this summer, the Getty will collaborate with a different local community partner on a two-day art fair filled with music, workshops, and food. This weekend’s festivities kick off in Inglewood!

Cinespia Presents Jurassic Park

When: May 13 – June 4
Where: Chinatown

What: Don’t miss the giant blockbuster hit, Jurassic Park, as it takes over the big screen this weekend. Hosted by Cinespia’s beloved cemetery screening series, screen the film in L.A. State Historic Park.

WESTSIDE AND BEACH COMMUNITIES WEEKEND EVENTS MAY 13 – MAY 15

Sunshine and Noir: 1980s L.A. Horror Marathon

When: May 14 

Where: Santa Monica

What: An ’80s horror marathon with films set in L.A.? Say less and head to the Aero for this frightening series of creature features. Films to be screened include The Live, Society, Slumber Party Massacre, Chopping Mall, Blood Diner, and Angel. The day-long program is part of the LA Phil’s Gen X Festival. 

BeachLife Festival

When: May 13 – May 15 

Where: Redondo Beach

What: BeachLife Festival returns to take over the Redondo Beach coastline this weekend. The rock-focused lineup features Weezer, 311, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Steve Miller Band. In addition, there will also be performances by the Black Pumas, Cold War Kids, Vance Joy, Stone Temple Pilots, Sheryl Crow, and Lord Huron.

Rooftop Cinema Club

Where: El Segundo

What: This Friday, catch a screening of ‘Sing 2’, ‘The Goonies’ or ‘10 Things I hate About You’ at El Segundo’s Rooftop Cinema Club series. The masters of alfresco rooftop movies provide the perfect setting for warm May weekend weather and an evening of fun under the stars.

60th Annual Topanga Banjo-Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival

Where: Paramount Ranch, Agoura Hills

What: The Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival will be celebrating its 60th Festival, enjoying the distinction as one of the oldest music festivals in the USA. Headlining this year’s TBFCF will be a rare west coast performance of the Grammy-nominated Po’ Ramblin’ Boys, originally from Sevierville, Tennessee.

Music for Ukraine Benefit Concert in Ventura

When: May 15 

Where: 3290 Loma Vista Rd, Ventura  

What: Local music professionals, organized by flutist Caitlin Boruch, have joined together to channel their talent and passion for performing into Music for Ukraine: Benefit Concert Series for Humanitarian Aid, a fundraising concert series where 100% of donations benefit UNICEF’s coordinated response to the crisis in Ukraine.

L.A. Underwater

What: Once upon a time Los Angeles was underwater – 90 million years ago to be exact. Get a close-up look at 40 locally-discovered fossils from when LA was a prehistoric ocean.

Unique LA Market

When: May 7-May 8

Where: Downtown Fashion District

What: The annual Unique market returns to downtown’s Fashion District this May weekend only. Described as the largest made-in-America shopping event in the country, there are a number of unique finds at this one-of-a-kind event. Peruse through clothes, accessories, and art pieces from a number of quality handmade brands. In addition, there will be local products to browse and different designers and artists showcasing their work to meet.

David Sedaris

What: Prodigious satirist David Sedaris grew up believing that the whole world wanted to hear what he had to say. He was right. Flamboyance: A Topiary Menagerie

When: Until July 31 

Where: Rancho Palos Verdes/Rolling Hills Estates

What: Over 100 topiary animals will be on view at the South Coast Botanic Garden now through July 31. The colorful installation, ‘Flamboyance’ includes 70 pink flamingos filled with begonias, as well as floral recreations of dogs, rabbits, monkeys, butterflies, and dolphins.

Where: B of A Performing Arts Plaza Thousand Oaks

What: Award-winning comic and TV personality Kathleen Madigan will bring her uproarious stand-up show to Thousand Oaks. Madigan’s comedy resume includes 25 appearances on the Tonight Show, along with other late-night shows. CSU Channel Islands Arts Under the Stars Event

Where: California State University Channel Islands | Camarillo

What: Enjoy CSUCI’s Arts Under the Stars this Friday! The event will have dancing, singing, acting, and a performance by a Ukrainian dance troupe for an evening to remember. “Inertia” is the theme for the 2022 CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI)’s Arts Under the Stars (AUTS) extravaganza.

Vintage Books & Vinyl LP Sale at the Newbury Park Library

Where: Newbury Park Library | Thousand Oaks

What: If you are a fan of rare books, you won’t want to miss Newbury Park Library’s Vintage Book & Vinyl Sale this weekend. The rare book collection will be available for sale with varied books to choose from dating back to the 20th century. Top Spring Museum Exhibits | Out & About

Southern California is lucky to be home to a wide variety of museums to appeal to different tastes. Think you’ve seen all of the region’s top museums? Thanks to temporary exhibits there is always plenty more art to see. Here are some of the best spring museum exhibits to enjoy around SoCal.

Wake Me When I’m Free

Hosted at The Canvas at L.A. LIVE, the Wake Me When I’m Free exhibit is dedicated to the late rapper, Tupac Shakur. The bold immersive exhibit takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the rapper’s life, including his music, activism, and art. Personal effects and poetry are also on display for the first time. The exhibit is not recommended for those under 14 years old.

Mapping Fiction

On display until May 2022, Mapping Fiction is a fascinating collection of maps from fictitious worlds. See a detailed depiction of Middle-earth from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. In addition, there is a representation of Dublin from James Joyce’s century-old Ulysses. You can also feast your eyes on maps from Treasure Island and Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. For even more sci-fi, check out the hand-drawn maps created by Octavia E. Butler for her science-fiction works. You’ll find this exhibit at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens.

A top SoCal exhibit for anyone interested in history, archaeology, and distant lands, the Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia showcases more than 100 ancient artifacts from the stunning Khmer-era complex of Angkor. While the area is most famous for the incredible temple of Angkor Wat, the complex is actually home to numerous once-glorious temple ruins. Offered in partnership with the National Museum of Cambodia, visitors can travel back in time at the California Science Center.

Hayao Miyazaki

Hosted at The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the Hayao Miyazaki exhibit takes visitors behind the scenes of the globally renowned Studio Ghibli. Discover more about one of the Academy’s top spring exhibits where the works of the famous filmmaker and artists are on display. Likewise, you’ll see art from movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Spirited Away. The first such exhibition in North America, it includes details of Miyazaki’s early career, film posters, immersive installations, film screenings in both English and Japanese, and more.

Matthew Thomas: Enlightenment

One of the top spring exhibits is happening at the California African American Museum (CAAM). Matthew Thomas: Enlightenment serves as a must-see for art fans. His bold and striking artworks combine vibrant colors, spiritual elements, religious symbolism, and geometric patterns, resulting in eye-catching abstract creations. The pieces are strongly inspired by Eastern ideologies and beliefs.

Norman Rockwell in the 1940s: A View of the American Homefront

Between early March and early October, the Norman Rockwell in the 1940s: A View of the American Homefront remembers those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Held at Catalina Museum for Art and History, located on Catalina Island, the exhibition falls over the 80th anniversary of the island’s role in World War Two. Travel back to the time of a nation at war as you view emotive images and advertisements from the past.

Beethoven’s Fidelio with Dudamel and Deaf West Theatre

Nothin’ But Sand Cleanup

Where: Downtown Santa Monica

What: Healthy the Bat invites you to join them this Saturday for a beach cleanup at Santa Monica Pier. The event will likely bring up to 600 volunteers with 2-3 hours of cleanup. Likewise, volunteers are expected to bring their own bucket, gloves, mask, and water bottle to help ensure the event is zero waste.

April Movie Nights on the Lawn

Where: Jamaica Bay Inn | Marina del Rey

What: Settle in for a movie night at the Jamaica Bay Inn in Marina del Rey. The free outdoor movie on the Inn’s lawn will be screening Pitch Perfect this Sunday. Seating is first come first serve with drinks, snacks, and treats available for purchase. Patrons should also bring their own low chairs, blankets, and pillows in case the Inn’s chairs are unavailable.

Music festivals are a great way to spend a leisurely fun-filled day (or longer!), and SoCal is lucky to have a great lineup of spring and summer festivals to choose between. There are those that are suitable for families and others that are great for adult groups of friends and couples to cut loose and enjoy the beats. Catering to diverse musical tastes, these are some of the best music festivals scheduled for the next few months in Southern California.

Coachella

Dress to impress and enter the desert in April to experience the epic adventure that is Coachella. Held over two weekends, the vibrant event is one of the state’s oldest art and music festivals. Each weekend promises three days of excitement and fun camping. A cool place for friends, it features massive art installations, food, and drink stalls, and a great vibe.

And that’s before you even consider the eclectic lineup of musical acts, with big names and up-and-coming performers from across a wide variety of genres. For 2022, acts include Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, Big Sean, and more. In addition, Fatboy Slim, Carly Rae Jepson, and Maneskin are just a few more names gracing the concert’s stages.

Stagecoach

Another April highlight, Stagecoach is known for being one of the best country music festivals out there. With acts like Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood, Luke Combs, Lee Brice, Cody Jinks, and Midland taking to the stages, it’s an all but guaranteed two days of fun. The festival falls on the last weekend of April / the first weekend of May.

Brea Summer Festival

A May highlight in Orange County, Brea Summer Festival features an array of cool events throughout the daytime, while night times bring lively concerts. Held over three days, the concerts are completely free to enjoy.

Doheny Blues Festival

Doheny Blues Festival is widely accepted as one of the best blues music festivals in the entire country. The annual event happens at Doheny Beach each May. Three stages offer continuous music, and attendees will also find food, drinks, games, and a large selection of vendors.

Oxnard Salsa Festival

Spanning two days in July, Oxnard Salsa Festival is a must-visit for fans of all things salsa. Dynamic music and dancing are highlights, along with deliciously spicy food. Likewise, people travel from far and wide to enjoy the invigorating spirit of salsa.

Hard Summer Music Festival

A San Bernardino staple for more than ten years, the three-day Hard Summer Music Festival attracts ravers of all ages and fans of heart-pumping EDM tunes and R&B beats. Scheduled for July 2022, the full lineup is yet to be announced. It’s a strictly over-18s event and a photo ID is required.

What: With the nickname “Southern California’s Official Spring Brake”, you know what to expect at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. Speed! Make your way to LB for a high-speed two-mile circuit around town. In addition, the event will also feature concerts and a family fun zone for children aged 3 to 6 years old.

The Medium is the Message + Martin Roemers + Lightguardhouse

When: April 10-October 23, 2022

Where: Culver City

What: The Cold War-focused Wende Museum debuts a trio of shows for the spring. The first of which,  “The Medium is the Message: Flags and Banners,” mixes Cold War-era Eastern Bloc political flags with contemporary artwork. The work of “Martin Roemers: Relics of the Cold War,” showcases a collection of abandoned war objects taken by the Dutch photographer between 1998 and 2009. In addition, Lightguardhouse displays a 1970s East Berlin state media guardhouse that artist Farrah Karapetian has turned into a rainbow lighthouse.
