Solar Panels and Your Home | Home Tips

Living in California, locals know how many benefits there are to installing solar panels on your home. To determine the solar panel type best suited for your installation, there are certain factors to consider. Below is a guide based on each type’s appearance, cost, and efficiency to determine the one that works best for your household.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

Appearance:

Monocrystalline cells appear black because of how light interacts with the pure silicon crystal. The back sheet of the monocrystalline solar panel is often black, silver or white, while the metal frames are typically black or silver.

Material

As the name suggests, monocrystalline solar panels are made from single silicon cells. To build a monocrystalline or polycrystalline panel, pure silicon is formed into bars and cut into wafers which are then framed together to form solar cells.

Cost

Of all other types, monocrystalline panels are the most expensive option, largely due to the manufacturing process known as the Czochralski process. This process is energy-intensive and often results in a lot of wasted silicon.

Efficiency

Since they come in higher wattage modules, monocrystalline panels have the highest power capacity and efficiencies higher than 20 percent.

Suitability

Monocrystalline solar panels are best suitable if you have limited space available and want to maximize your electric bill savings in the long run.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Material

Also referred to as multi-crystalline panels, polycrystalline solar cells are made of many fragments of raw silicon crystals that are melted together in a mold before being cut into wafers.

Appearance

As a result of the light reflecting off the silicon crystals in the cell, polycrystalline solar cells show a bluish hue. The frames of polycrystalline panels are silver, while the back sheets are either silver or white.

Efficiency

Polycrystalline solar panels have lower efficiency of between 15-17% as they do not generate as much electricity from the sun compared to Monocrystalline panels.

Suitability

This solar panel is ideal for property owners with a lot of space but on a budget.

Thin-Film Solar Panels

Material

Thin-film panels are made from single or multiple layers of PV elements. The PV elements are deposited over a surface of glass, plastic, or metal. The most common types of thin-film solar panels are made using the CdTe technology.

Appearance

As the name suggests, thin-film panels are often slimmer than other panel types. Thin-film solar panels usually come in both blue and black hues.

Cost

The overall cost of a thin-film solar panel installation is lower than the other types of panels. In addition, the process of thin-film solar installation is less labor-intensive. This is because the panels are lighter weight and more maneuverable, thus reducing the general labor costs.

Efficiency

Efficiencies will vary based on the specific material used in the cells. Likewise, thin-film panels tend to have lower power capacities and efficiencies closer to 11 percent.

Suitability

Thin-film panels require a lot of space to meet your energy needs and are best suitable for large commercial roofs since they have more area to place them on. It wouldn’t make sense to place them on residential installations where space is limited.

These enhanced sensors, made from 3D graphene foam, offer unique properties when put under mechanical stress. According to the researchers, the 3D graphene foam has the capability to mimic the sensitivity and feedback of human touch. The project contends this could transform how robotics can be used for various applications, from surgery to precision manufacturing.

6 Ways to Keep Your Phone Cyber-Safe

If you use a cell phone, you are walking around with a ticking cyber bomb in your pocket. An ever-present and growing threat to smartphones is malware. Although Apple and Google-controlled software stores are vigilant in weeding out unsafe apps, many cell phone users rely on third-party download repositories that run riot with infectious malware. And this is not the only threat. Cybercriminals slip malicious mobile malware onto your phone through various methods. All you need do is visit the wrong website or open an attached document to enable malware.

Know the Risks
  • If your phone has one or more of these symptoms, the cause could be malware:
  • Unusual messages and pop-ups
  • Messages that are inappropriate or unwanted ad pop-ups are signs of malware or spyware.
  • Titles in your app drawer or library you do not recognize. An internet search for the title may indicate if the app is safe. Delete all unknown app titles.
  • Slow performance. This might mean that you are almost maxed out on your available RAM (random access memory). Remove unused apps and restart your phone. If the slowness remains, suspect malware.
  • High internet usage and/or increased battery consumption
  • Unusual noise or static on your phone connections. This indicates that a surveillance app is snooping on your phone conversations.
  • Unusual voicemail messages or text messages. Getting messages and calls from unknown parties clearly indicates that your phone may be compromised.

New foldable smartphones from Samsung unveiled

FTC Pushes for Change on How Big Tech Handles Data

This week, the FTC issued a new notice that calls on input for how tech companies should handle consumer data. This notice is the first step in creating binding rules for the industry. Likewise, the filing calls for public comment on data collection, algorithmic discrimination, and commercial surveillance. The questions, of course, suggest that the commission is focused on how to handle data collection better as the digital age continues to evolve and expand.

Apple Focuses on Funding Podcasts that Can be Converted into TV Shows

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple has signed a deal with Futuro Studio to fund the development and production of future podcasts. Likewise, the podcast producer will provide Apple with first refusal on the rights to turn any podcasts into a film or TV show. Of course, this would not be the first time Apple has turned podcasts into content with the recent series WeCrashed and The Shrink Next Door.  As of late, long-form podcasts have become a source of inspiration for several TV shows and streaming services. Other Networks have already jumped on the podcast to the tv-series bandwagon, like Hulu’s The Dropout.

Whole Foods to Soon Allow Hand Scanning for Payment

Garden-Friendly California Birds and How to Attract Them | Home Tips

If you love relaxing outdoors while watching feathered creatures and listening to the lilting sounds of bird songs, why not make your garden more appealing to attract California birds almost right up to your doorstep? We’ve listed some of the most common backyard birds in Southern California, along with tips to tempt them closer to your home.

Allen’s Hummingbird

With vibrant shades of orange and green, the small and dainty Allen’s hummingbird is especially common close to California’s coast. Plant nectar-rich flowers to attract these birds into your California garden.

Morning Dove

Gentle and pretty with a soft cooing call, morning doves often appear in pairs. You’ll spot them pecking around a bird feeder and on the ground, and they prefer to feast on nuts, seeds, and berries.

Anna’s Hummingbird

Another nectar-loving California bird, Anna’s hummingbird, with its green and pink plumage, creates colorful flashes as it flits from flower to flower. When you plant tube-shaped flowers like scarlet gilia, chuparosa, and penstemon, it’s relatively easy to attract these lovely birds into your garden.

Plumbeous Vireo

The migratory plumbeous vireo is a small gray songbird who likes to hang out in the treetops. They eat an array of common garden insects, which typically live on native flora. Plant trees and bushes to attract the plumbeous vireo’s favorite food.

American Robin

Known for its striking orange chest feathers, the American robin sings a joyful song all day long. They eat diverse foods, from earthworms and insects to seeds, fruit, and nuts.

White-Crowned Sparrows

Most commonly spotted during the winter months, white-crowned sparrows take their name from the striking white and black stripes on their heads. The small California birds will sometimes come to a feeder, though you’ll also see them on the ground picking up seeds dropped by other birds.

House Finch

A regular visitor to bird feeders in California’s gardens, the small house finch eats various fruit and seed. You can tell the males and females apart by their colors; while female house finches are brown, the males have reddish-pink heads and chests. The house finch is among the most spotted California birds.

Northern Mockingbird

One of the most beautifully sounding backyard birds in Southern California, the northern mockingbird sings almost all day long. They tweet out various ditties, putting plenty of character into their tunes. Indeed, you may at first think you’re listening to a chorus of several birds. Fruit trees and bushes are particularly appealing for northern mockingbirds, and you may see the small gray birds perched on power lines and tall shrubs.

Even More Yard-Friendly California Birds

Other enchanting avian species that may visit your SoCal garden include:

  • California Towhee
  • Nuttall’s Woodpecker
  • Lesser Goldfinch
  • Bushtit
  • California Scrub-Jay
  • Black Phoebe
  • Bewick’s Wren
  • American Crow

You may also spot California’s state bird — the California quail. You’ll have the best chances of attracting the quail if you have dense shrubbery where the bird can feel safe and if you sprinkle seed on the ground.

Tips for Attracting Cali Birds

There are several ways you can make your garden more appealing to birds:

  • Plant a variety of flowers, trees, and bushes
  • Offer mixed bird food, such as small pieces of fruit, commercial bird seed, and mealworms at a bird table
  • Hang feeders from tree branches
  • Install a bird bath
  • Install bird nesting boxes
  • Keep cats indoors

Essentially, offering food, water and shelter can help to bring a variety of charming California birds into your garden.

The Best Neutral Decor Ideas For Your Home | Home Tips

When people think about neutral decor ideas, they usually picture boring tones of beige, but with the right combination of colors, contrasts, and textures, you can end up with absolutely fantastic results. When you start considering a palette of neutral colors, try not to stick to the most obvious ones. Neutral colors include shades like browns, grays, whites, and even metallic hues! So, with this in mind, let’s move forward with our favorite decorating ideas for awesome neutral decor.

1. Getting Started on Neutral Decor : Choose The Color For The Walls

One of the best ways to get started on neutral decor is to remember that “neutral” doesn’t mean you must use a single color. When you go for a neutral look, simply choose a range of colors that “go” with everything else. You’ll want to achieve a down-to-earth, relaxing space. With this in mind, the first step should be to work on your room’s background. By background, we are referring to the walls of the room you want to decorate. Choosing a pale ivory color can create the illusion of a room that is airy, fresh, and filled with light. Likewise, and in many cases, a few well-placed mirrors can help to make your room look larger.

2. Up Next: Your Windows And Floors

The most important part of neutral decor is your flooring and the color of your window treatments. These two will set the stage for everything else you place in that room. In addition, they are flexible enough to allow you to stray from the color of the walls. In the case of flooring, a nice earth tone will help your room look clean and fresh. Make sure your window treatments provide a contrast to your floors in order to make your room feel warm and welcoming.

3. Furniture: The Icing On The Cake

When you are looking to achieve the perfect neutral decor, you should consider using colors that contrast with your flooring. A great look is achieved by using a darker brown color for your furniture. Additionally, you should keep in mind that you can add throw pillows in a variety of tones to add an even more welcoming sense of warmth to the room.

4. Wrap It Up With Awesome Seasonal Neutral Decor

While it is understandable that seasonal decorations will add a bit of color to your neutral decor, it is possible to maintain a wonderfully classical look all year round by selecting decorations that are crafted out of natural materials, such as wreaths made out of twigs or dry branches, and even a beautiful ceramic vase with colorful flowers that will give a touch of life to your space. It is at this point you can highlight a certain accessory by using brighter colors in a neutral room. Remember that a neutral decor doesn’t require overloading but can achieve a perfect look with a few great accessories in the right places.

5. Playing With Pastels

One of the most beautiful things about neutral decor colors is that they can be paired with certain shades of pastel to create a welcoming environment you will always love coming home to. Adding pastel-colored accents to your neutral setting will result in a sophisticated look that is hard to achieve any other way, especially if you have chosen the earthen range of neutral colors for your decor.

Chromecast must be on the same Wi-Fi network as your cameras. You can either use the Google TV voice remote by pressing the Assistant button and saying, “show me the front door camera,” or ask your Nest speaker or smart display to show you the front door camera on my TV.”
