Weekend Events | May 29 – May 31

Now that May is coming to a close, there is no better way to celebrate the arrival of June than with some weekend fun. Friday Night Wine Tastings

Where: Los Feliz

What: A beloved L.A. summer tradition, the wine tastings at Barnsdall Art Park blend boutique pours, sunset views, and laid-back city vibes high above Hollywood. Held on the west lawn of Hollyhock House, the 21+ evenings feature curated wines from Silverlake Wine, DJ sets, food trucks, and sweeping skyline views perfect for a summer date night. Guests can bring blankets and picnic set-ups, while proceeds from the event help support the park’s arts programming and preservation efforts. 

Friday Movie Nights

Where: Hollywood & Highland | Hollywood

What: Catch a movie under the stars at Ivation Hollywood during this free outdoor screening series held on the last Friday of each month from May through September. Guests can RSVP in advance and cosy up beneath the iconic archway with complimentary blankets, free popcorn, and discounted treats from the TCL Chinese Theatre concessions stand. L.A. County Fair

Catalina Wine Mixer

What: Inspired by the unforgettable Step Brothers quote, the Catalina Wine Mixer returns to Catalina Island for its 11th year of music, wine, and beachside chaos. The weekend kicks off with a party at the historic Catalina Casino Ballroom, plus a screening of the cult-favorite comedy at the Avalon Theatre and a late-night beach bash. The Brady Experience

Recently designated a Historic-Cultural Monument and famously restored through A Very Brady Renovation, the house has been meticulously recreated down to its groovy kitchen, wood-paneled study, and nostalgia-filled bedrooms. Talks & Telescopes

Where: Mt. Wilson | Angeles National Forest

What: Want to peer through the eyepiece of Mt. Wilson’s historic telescopes? Your best and most economical bet just might be one of the Talks & Telescopes events. These monthly Saturday-night astronomy lectures are followed up with a few hours of stargazing on portable telescopes on the grounds, as well as the 60- and 100-inch telescopes, for only $50 (a fraction of the price of the observatory’s late-night stargazing sessions).

Artazan Handcraft Market

What: Celebrate the timeless charm of the Arts and Crafts movement at this Pasadena festival featuring more than 100 artisans showcasing handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, textiles, fine art, home décor, and gourmet goods. The Beach Boys 5K & Wellness Day

Where: Santa Monica

What: Catch some good vibrations at The Beach Boys–inspired 5K in Santa Monica, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the iconic Pet Sounds. The event kicks off at Third Street Promenade with a dedication ceremony and pre-race meditation led by original Beach Boy Mike Love before runners head through scenic Palisades Park. There’s even a “Pet Sounds” dog run for pups who want in on the fun. After crossing the finish line, participants can enjoy a lively festival with wellness activities, live music, and a VIP beer garden, all while supporting ocean conservation through a partnership with the Surfrider Foundation.

 

Beverly Hills Art Show

What: A beloved Beverly Hills tradition since 1973, this longtime arts festival transforms Beverly Gardens Park into an open-air gallery each spring and fall. More than 250 artists will showcase works ranging from paintings and sculpture to photography and watercolor pieces along four blocks of Santa Monica Boulevard between Rodeo and Rexford Drives. Backrooms Experience

When: May 14 – May 17 

Where: Burbank

What: To build buzz for its upcoming horror film The Backrooms, A24 is bringing the internet’s favorite liminal nightmare to life with a free immersive pop-up in Burbank. Inspired by Kane Parsons’ viral web series, the experience invites visitors to wander through unsettling yellow rooms, endless fluorescent hallways, and surreal spaces straight out of the eerie online phenomenon. Running May 13–17, the activation blends creepy atmosphere with interactive surprises for horror fans brave enough to “noclip” out of reality. Admission is free, but advance time-slot reservations are highly recommended.

Cooking in Community

Where: Cottonwood Urban Farm | 8380 Ventura Canyon Avenue

What: Reconnect with food, nature, and community at this hands-on outdoor cooking workshop hosted at Cottonwood Urban Farm in Panorama City. Guided by health coach Vanessa M. Kuhn, guests will gather around seasonal spring ingredients to chop, cook, and share a simple dish in a relaxed, beginner-friendly setting. Universal Fan Fest Nights

What: Skip the scares and lean into the fandom at Universal Studios Hollywood’s returning after-hours event, running on select nights through May 16. This fan-focused experience brings beloved worlds to life, from Scooby-Doo and Harry Potter to Dungeons & Dragons, One Piece, Super Mario Bros., and Sailor Moon. Expect stunt-filled live shows, interactive walkthroughs, and themed bites like Scooby snacks, a hippogriff-inspired trifle, and a moon scepter churro. Costumes are encouraged (within park guidelines), making it a playful, immersive night designed for fans to fully step into their favorite universes.

California Strawberry Festival

Where: Ventura County Fairgrounds

What: Celebrate the sweet side of spring at this beloved strawberry festival, now in its 40th year and bigger than ever at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. From classic strawberry shortcake and chocolate-dipped treats to unexpected creations like strawberry chimichangas and strawberry beer, the event serves up endless ways to enjoy the iconic fruit. Returning May 17 to the scenic Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, the festival brings together blues legends like Bobby Rush, Kirk Fletcher, and Earl Thomas for a day of soulful live music in a shaded canyon setting. Add in BBQ, raffles, and an easygoing crowd, and it’s the kind of Sunday that feels effortlessly cool.

Matilija Poppy Festival

What: Celebrate California’s iconic Matilija poppy at the annual Matilija Poppy Festival on May 17, 2026, hosted by the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden. Out and About: Solvang Edition

Longing for a stroll through the old world, but can’t get away to Europe? Then this may be the coastal day trip for you. About 30 miles southeast of Santa Barbara is the historic Danish village of Solvang, located in California’s Santa Ynez Valley and renowned for its classical architecture, wineries, charming boutiques and, naturally, authentic pastries. So. Many. Pastries.

AEBLESKIVER CAFE

Once you’ve arrived, be sure to start exploring Solvang by indulging in a Danish Aebleskiver. What’s an Aebleskiver? Imagine a European pancake but with a fluffy interior. Oh, and while the translation might indicate apples are involved, usually they are not. Of course, the Aebleskiver Café also offers sausage and other international foods, but you really came for the Aebleskiver.

SOLVANG TROLLY & CARRIAGE COMPANY

Why walk when you can be carried along by a horse-drawn carriage? In 1973, H.H.H. Rasmussen made the Honen (The Hen in Danish), available to Solvang visitors. And ever since the Solvang Trolley, powered by two draft horses, has been offering narrated tours of the area.

OLD MISSION SANTA INES

Solvang isn’t merely rich with history out on the streets. Whether it’s the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum, the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art or the Amber Museum and Hall of the Danes, there is plenty to appreciate indoors. Likewise, the area’s vintage churches include the Old Mission Santa Ines and Bethania Lutheran. Old Mission Santa Ines was the 19th of the 21 missions built in California from 1769 to 1836 by Spanish Franciscan priests. Founded on Sept. 17, 1804, it marked the first European settlement in the Santa Ynez Valley.

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON MUSEUM

A stroll of the picturesque village will take you past windmills and a clock tower, but also a statue of the Little Mermaid. Her creator’s influence extends to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, run by the non-profit Ugly Duckling Foundation with the aim of spotlighting his work.

If you’re feeling ambitious, there is the 32-mile Sideways Movie Bike Tour, which takes you to locations used in the film. But for the less dauntless, there is the easy five-to-10 minute Scenic Family Bicycle Ride, which includes plenty of sightseeing.

For lovers of boutique shopping, Solvang offers the chance to browse more than 150 unique shops for high-end imports, trends and out-of-the-way discoveries. A Piece of the Past boasts 28 different dealers, offering vintage collectibles and antiques.

WINE SAMPLING

What would a day tour be without wine sampling? Given the proximity to the Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Maria Valley and Santa Rita Hills, it’s to be expected that you can find more than 20 tasting rooms in downtown Solvang. But did you know several, such as the Lucas & Lewellen Wine Tasting Room, are dog-friendly?

Evening

Once you’re finished exploring for the day, kick back to dine. Local eateries range from the Fresno Valley Café, which offers a dog menu in addition to its fresh California cuisine with excellent craft beer, to The Hummingbird’s Island Caribbean cuisine.

“ASSSSCAT” Comedy Improv Performance

Every Saturday and Sunday, the UCB franchise’s longest-running, most beloved showcase “ASSSCAT” starts when a base cast of the theater’s current top-brass—including founding UCB members Matt Walsh, Matt Besser and Ian Roberts—takes the stage. Then they introduce the surprise celebrity alumnae and friends who will be joining them (think Horatio Sanz, Ben Schwartz, Adam Pally). And finally, another special guest takes the stage, a non-improviser (think Flea, Cat Power, Rebel Wilson, Lena Dunham) who opens the show with a personal story, that’s deftly mined for laughs by the players.
