From the Facebook Metaverse to Sprints 4G Shutdown | Tech News

Get your dose of weekly tech news! This week’s blog takes a trip into the Metaverse with Facebook and bids adieu to Sprints 4G LTE Network.

Microsoft and Facebook Seek to Build a Metaverse

From the Facebook Metaverse to Sprints 4G Shutdown

While the term and concept of metaverse may seem science fiction, the major tech shift to expanding out their platform proves otherwise. In recent months Facebook pushed forward on creating a metaverse group within their AR/VR-focused reality Labs. Microsoft at this time has been looking for the “enterprise metaverse”. The shift in focus from both companies is not just related to gaming but to rethinking how we live and work. Both companies are hoping to create a future-forward social hub, where avatars can meet in an ecosystem for connected apps. In a statement to CNET reporter Scott Stein, Mark Zuckerberg shared that his goal would be to bring people together for work. Microsoft and software developer Spatial each share similar goals. When and how these companies hope to bring a mass swath of consumers online and into their metaverse has yet to be determined.

CA Legislators Seek to Incentivize Buying Used Electric Vehicles

The Affordable EVs for Working Families Act seeks to incentivize used car purchases. The new legislation being pushed comes from California’s own Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Rep Jimmy Gomez. If passed, the bill would provide up to $2,500 off the purchase of a used electric vehicle. Their hope is that the initiative will drive down CO2 emissions. “This bill would help make electric cars affordable to a larger group of people,” said Feinstein. “With an electric car in the driveway, working families will be able to save money on gas and maintenance costs” Gomez added. Qualifying used EVs would need to be at least two years old and cost less than $25,000. Sorry, Tesla Fam.

TMobile to Shut Down Sprints 4G LTE Network

From the Facebook Metaverse to Sprints 4G Shutdown

It’s the end of a Sprint 4G LTE era. In the latest change since the two companies merged last April, T-Mobile has shared the next step in bringing the carriers together. Beginning on June 20 of 2022, Sprint’s 4G LTE network will shut down. The company stated that “retiring older network technologies” allow it “to free up resources and bridge the Digital Divide.” Part of this process, the statement continues, “involves moving Sprint’s LTE spectrum to the T-Mobile network.” The company has said that “most” Sprint LTE and 5G devices will work with its LTE or 5G network. The carrier added that it will contact those who could be impacted by the switch and that notifications began last year.

The New iOS15 May Include Less Green Flares and Another Camera Upgrade

From the Facebook Metaverse to Sprints 4G Shutdown

According to reports, the next iOS should feature another camera upgrade and less green flares. Yay! In Apple’s latest version of the iOS 15 beta, subtle improvements are showing to the phone’s photo processing. Those familiar with the green blobs that tend to appear when taking an image will know this persistent iPhone issue. Some iPhone users have already noticed the change on their devices while most others have not. As with most recent iOS updates, certain features have been limited to phones with the most recent A12 Bionic processor or newer (XS and XR onward). Users should expect this and more new features when the final iOS15 is unveiled.

Pentagon Uses AI to Predict Events Days into the Future

In what literally sounds like Deju Vu, aka everyone’s favorite Denzel film, the Pentagon is using AI to predict the future. While this may sound like pure cinema, it is not quite as Sci-Fi film-related as it sounds. Gen. Glen D. VanHerck, commander of NORAD, and US Northern Command shared in a recent briefing the latest results of the GIDE. “We’re taking sensors from around the globe, not only military sensors but commercially available information, and utilizing that for domain awareness,” he explained. “We would take artificial intelligence and use machine learning to take a look and assess, for example, the average number of cars in a parking lot that may be there in a specific location to a competitor or a threat.” The system is meant to look for changes in an environment, that if suspicious would trigger an alert. The technology used for the system is not new but rather a combination of existing resources. The Pentagon has not yet released specific details on what GIDE involves.

Square to Buy Afterpay for $29 Billion

Square, the processing for which Twitter’s Jack Dorsey is CEO and co-founder, has plans to expand its reach. In an announcement this week the company announced plans to acquire Australian company Afterpay.  Offering a “buy now, pay later” service, AfterPay lets you pay for purchases in installments interest-free. The purchase will be made for $29 billion in stock.  This serves as just the latest major move by Square which also announced a Bitcoin business unit. “Square and Afterpay have a shared purpose,” said Jack Dorsey in a statement. He continues by adding, “We built our business to make the financial system more fair, accessible, and inclusive, and Afterpay has built a trusted brand aligned with those principles.”

Home Tips: How to Tastefully Add Retro Style to Your Home

Style trends shift every couple of years within the realm of interior design. Whether you are looking to remodel or outfit a completely new home, it is imperative to stay on top of the current fad to ensure your home feels fresh. Fresh doesn’t always imply modernity, however, as retro styles are making a massive comeback. While the pure definition of what constitutes “retro” is not completely clear cut, retro-style within interior design generally refers to décor, typically refers to pieces from the 1950s to the 1970s.

What is Retro Style?

Due to the approximately 30-year range retro style consists of, this trend incorporates a wide variety of textures and colors. The diversity of textures that the retro style comprises is one of its defining traits. Be sure to include soft vinyl, polished plastics, and velvet fabric in every room. Furthermore, avocado green, mustard yellow, red, pink, white, black, and brown are colors central to the retro experience. Pieces with a combination of these colors are perfect for your retro-style home and are sure to stand out. Floors are customarily either hardwood or checkered designs.

Retro Room Design

In the living room, sprawling velvet sofas with multi-colored pillows are commonplace as the space’s focal point. Classic chairs and ottomans are also vital to the retro living room experience. On the floor, a shag carpet is frequently featured. Finally, a wooden coffee table is ordinarily placed in the center of the room, surrounded by the sofa, chairs, and ottomans.

The bedroom of a retro-style home starts with the style of bed. A wide variety of bedding options fit the theme; however, it is essential that colors and textures focal to the trend are used. Additionally, a retro-style bench in front of the bed is prevalent. Abstract art on the wall above the bed is another great touch in making the room have a true retro feel.

In the office, a wooden desk and velvet office chair are customary. A minimalistic floor lamp with square shades next to the desk provides light for the individual working at it. A typewriter for show can also bring the retro aesthetic to the next level.

Implementing Retro Into the Modern Day
Image via Elle Decor

While the retro style is trendy at the moment, it can also be overdone. To avoid this, a combination of retro and modern décor pieces is the way to go. For example, checkered flooring can fit perfectly within a modern kitchen. Moreover, combining a retro sofa with a sleek modern coffee table in the living room can create a stark yet pleasing contrast. Finally, using retro colors on modern pieces of furniture is a perfect way to combine the two styles. There is no perfectly defined way to outfit your home with a combination of modern and retro; you should simply draw elements from both to avoid one style overtaking the other.

With redesigning a home comes purchasing the furnishings themselves. If you are looking to install authentic and retro style within your home, you can purchase furniture from the time period from antique shops or online stores such as Etsy. For those seeking to ditch the thrifting and obtain newer pieces styled after the time period, La Brea’s furniture district would be our go-to.

Facebook Pushes Forward on Instagram for Kids

From Instagram for Kids to Jeff Bezos $2B Offer to NASA

In what seemed like an early April Fools joke, Facebook will be pushing forward with the Instagram for Kids plans. This week, the company shared in a blog post the plan to move forward on the “new Instagram experience for tweens”. Regarding the youth initiative, the company shared their desire “to build experiences designed specifically for them, managed by parents and guardians.” It was earlier this year, in March, that Buzzfeed obtained a memo from the company with its new shift in focus. The internal Instagram memo stated the company had “identified youth work as a priority” and was planning to build a version specifically intended for kids. The product will reportedly be called Instagram Youth, which will automatically set the profiles of users under 16 to private and ban marketers from advertising products targeting youth. Facebook has not yet revealed when it will launch an Instagram version for kids.

From Instagram for Kids to Jeff Bezos $2B Offer to NASA

For those that have maintained their Snapchat commitment, a new feature will be coming your way. In what sounds like a cool blend of Google Maps and Yelp, Snapchat wants to recommend places you should visit. With 250 million people using the app’s built-in map interface was recently upgraded to a main tab inside the app. This week the company announced a new feature would begin to surface popular places it thinks you may want to visit. Snap Map users will start seeing a lists of places, such as bars or restaurants. The recommendations will be based on places they’ve either tagged in past posts or favorited to check out. The app’s “Popular” tab will show suggestions for places to go based on factors like your current location and friend activity. “This new algorithm in our Popular Tab sets Snap Map apart as a highly personalized discovery platform and is a first-of-its-kind feature for Snapchat, overall,” said a Snap representative in an interview with The Verge.

Jeff Bezos Offers $2B to NASA to Get Blue Origin Back in the Space Race.

From Instagram for Kids to Jeff Bezos $2B Offer to NASA

Jeff Bezos is committed to the space race! A $2 BILLION DOLLAR commitment, to be exact. The Amazon founder wants to give NASA up to $2 billion as his bid to reignite the billionaire battle for space. This, of course, being the contest apparently taking place between the world’s two richest men and their company’s – Bezos’ Blue Origin and Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Nothing to worry about for us regular folk here on earth. Bezos appealed to NASA’s Administrator Bill Nelson this week in an open letter to consider Blue Origin as the next vehicle to land astronauts on the moon. The proposal to contract Blue Origin for the build comes a few months after NASA selected Space X for a $2.9 billion contract. “Blue Origin will bridge the HLS budgetary funding shortfall by waiving all payments in the current and next two government fiscal years up to $2 billion to get the program back on track right now,” Bezos wrote in the letter. NASA expects to land the first woman and the next man on the moon’s south pole in 2024 through its Artemis program.

Beginning this fall, United says it will extend the option to passengers of all flights over 1,500 miles.

Kindle Says Goodbye to Internet Access for Older Models

From Instagram for Kids to Jeff Bezos $2B Offer to NASA

It’s a sad day for your old Kindle. Amazon has announced that Kindle e-readers with built-in 3G will begin to lose the ability to connect to the internet. According to an email sent to customers this week, the feature will phase out entirely in the US in December. This recent change is due to mobile carriers transitioning from older 2G and 3G to newer 4G and 5G networks. Kindles without Wi-Fi may run into the issue of not connecting to the internet at all. While Kindles with 4G support should be fine, models with 3G or lower will be stuck with Wi-Fi only. Amazon stressed in its statement that users will still be able to enjoy their downloaded content.

Google Voice Adds New Missed Call and Caller ID Features

For those that use Google Voice, for whichever reason, Google has added new and long-overdue features. This week, the company announced it’s adding new caller ID, missed call, and SMS message features to Google Voice. Home Tips: How to Add a Pop of Color to Your Kitchen

The modern kitchen is the heart of the home. These days, families spend a lot of their time together in the kitchen. Therefore, if it looks dull and tired, you must give it a jolt to liven it up. One way of doing this is by using colors innovatively. However, this does not mean that you need to overload your kitchen with color. Below are some tips that you can count on to give your kitchen a pop of color.

Update Paint

This is perhaps the most obvious way to add a pop of color to your kitchen. It simply involves giving your kitchen walls and ceiling a fresh coat of paint. If you do not want to do that, you can simply paint unexpected kitchen surfaces, such as the sides of the kitchen island.

Add A Colorful Rug

Sometimes, adding a pop of color to your kitchen can be as simple as adding a new colorful rug. If you are afraid that an ordinary rug might not be a match for your moisture-prone kitchen floor, you can go for a moisture-resistant rug.

Add a Colorful Lighting Fixture

Did you know that there are lighting fixtures that you can add without wiring anything? For instance, colorful plug-in pendants and chandeliers are beautiful, and they can add a pop of color to your kitchen. They come in many different colors, and you can be sure that you will find exactly what your kitchen needs to look lively again.

Add Colorful Furniture or Appliances

Another way of adding a pop of color to your kitchen is by introducing a new colorful kitchen appliance or piece of furniture. Kitchen appliances such as microwave ovens and refrigerators come in many different colors, and therefore, picking a colorful one can go a long way in revving up your kitchen color.

Update Your Dinnerware

If your dinnerware is always visible, then you can use it to add a pop of color to your kitchen. To refresh the color of your kitchen, you can simply buy a new set of more colorful dinnerware.

Add Art

This is one of the simplest ways of adding a pop of color to your kitchen. A colorful piece of art, photograph, or even vintage ads can introduce the color you need to give your kitchen a lively appearance again.

The Bottom Line

Overall, it is apparent that if you are tired of the current appearance of your kitchen interior, you can make it lively again by adding a pop of bright color. There are several simple ways in which you can do this. For instance, you can introduce a colorful piece of art, update the paint, add colorful kitchen appliances, or even add a colorful rug.
