Home Tips: The Best Winter Plants for Your Garden

If you want an attractive garden all throughout the year, having plants that bloom in different seasons is ideal. Whether you prefer vibrant blossoms, lush foliage, or edible plants, enjoy scenic splendor all year round when you include some of these eight beautiful winter plants in your landscaping.

Winter Jasmine

Fast-growing with a potentially large spread and height, winter jasmine is hardy enough to survive during the colder months. Yellow flowers add bursts of color to any garden without the overpowering sweet scent that you may expect from other jasmine species.

Red Emu Bush

During the summer, the red emu bush displays dull green leaves. In the winter, however, the foliage takes on striking hues of purple-gray, accompanied by bright red flowers. Perfect for dry conditions, the red emu bush makes for a handsome feature plant or can be used to create a pretty hedgerow. As an added incentive for bird lovers, the blossoms of winter plants like this are known for attracting hummingbirds.

Pansies

Pansies sport flowers of diverse shades, creating plenty of low-lying colors around your garden over the winter. Easy to grow from seed, pansies can survive minor frosts as a great winter plant. As well as looking great, pansy flowers are edible too.

Swiss Chard

If you want to incorporate tasty vegetables in your garden, swiss chard is a terrific option for wintertime. The large green leaves grow on reddish-pink stems, creating quite a visual statement. Make sure to plant swiss chard in sunlight for the best results. Other vegetable plants that grow well over the winter include cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and broccoli.

Sweet Alyssum

Sweet alyssum thrives in colder conditions; in hot weather, the plant falls dormant. An ideal plant for border edges, sweet alyssum also looks beautiful when planted in pots. The small white and pale purple flowers look attractive next to bolder blooms too.

Snapdragons

Available in various colors and with an interesting appearance caused by distinct flowers and a tower-like shape, some varieties of snapdragon also have a gentle delicate fragrance. Snapdragons can survive frost, thus keeping your garden colorful throughout the winter months.

Yuletide Camellia

With a Christmassy name, it’s likely no surprise that the evergreen shrub of yuletide camellia is a great winter plants choice. The leaves are dark green and shiny and the red flowers feature a beautifully contrasting bright yellow stamen. The plant needs little water, making it good for dry conditions, and you only need to fertilize the plant once each year.

Marigolds

Sometimes also known as calendula, marigolds typically produce flowers all throughout the year, though in Southern California the flowers are generally larger over the winter. The flowers are in eye-catching tones of deep orange and vibrant yellow, with petals darkening towards the outer edges. Marigold flowers and leaves are edible, and the plant has also long been celebrated for having healing properties.

The Best Thanksgiving Centerpiece Ideas | Home Tips

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and you have your checklist on hand; turkey, check, pumpkin pie, check; what about the centerpiece? The perfect centerpiece for your dinner table is the icing on the cake for your Thanksgiving celebrations. Now is the perfect time to design the perfect thanksgiving centerpiece. We put together these centerpiece ideas for inspiration. Every home is unique; feel free to throw in personal touches to bring the arrangements together.

1. A Wildflower Vase

Spice things up by using a pumpkin Vase and decorating it with your favorite wildflowers. Larger dinner settings can get multiple vases placed at regular intervals. You can also play around with the vase sizes. The perfect wildflower pumpkin vase is just a click away.

2. Painted Pumpkins

You can paint your pumpkins to fit your theme colors. Painted pumpkins create the ultimate feel of luxurious aristocracy in any home. You can add other complementary pieces like candle holders and lace trimmings to the setup. Use acrylic paint for flawlessly painted pumpkins.

3. LED Lights in Leaves

Let the light shine in. LED lights are a great way to get creative with dinner table lighting. Our design includes leaves twining around the lights, but you can make a unique design using your LED lights to match your setup. Varying the height creates a spectacular light display.

4. An Edible Center Piece

Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to throw away the centerpiece after dinner? An edible centerpiece should be gone by the end of dinner, saving you the trouble of cleaning up. It is also a chance to infuse flavor into the thanksgiving dinner. An edible centerpiece looks immaculate when paired with wood pieces and warm colors.

5. Plaid Designs

This design features patterned table fabric that creates a sophisticated feel around the dinner table. Feel free to add any trimmings that go well with the plaid look. Plaid napkins give life and color to your dinner setting. You can incorporate flower vases with matching flowers and wooden pieces to boot.

6. The Maize Vase

Why go for a boring old glass vase when you can create one using maize cobs. Leave the maize attached to the cob and spray-paint it to add a little pazazz to your thanksgiving centerpiece. Once the cobs are dry, tie them together in a circle, then glue the pieces together. For the flowers, go for bright colored flowers that catch the eye. Place the maize vase on a high point to showcase its beauty. You can also place painted pumpkins beside this centerpiece.

7. Wheat Cloches

We saved the best for last. Work with a colorful table cloth and start by tying a hand full of wheat using brightly colored thread. Then turn a Cloche upside down and place the bundle inside. Place the cloche right side up back on the table. You can pair this design with candle holders and edible pieces around the cloches. There you go, the perfect wheat cloche design, a picture of elegance and sophistication.

DART serves as NASA’s test run of a futuristic planetary defense system. NASA constructed to intentionally slam into an asteroid. The spacecraft serves as a defense system that’ll protect Earth in the instance of possible impact. Thanksgiving Safety Tips | Home Tips

Thanksgiving is one of the most festive times of the year, a time for coming together, for loved ones separated by circumstance to reunite and celebrate and show gratitude. Unfortunately, it’s also a time of tragedy. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Thanksgiving is the single worst day for home fires throughout the nation. Here are seven Thanksgiving safety tips to help you and yours stay safe this Thanksgiving.

Do Not Leave Food Unattended While Frying, Boiling, Grilling, or Broiling

Cooking a great Thanksgiving meal is what you do. It’s a tradition, and doing it makes you happy. It also is time-consuming and reduces the time you can visit with family. Leaving food unattended that’s being fried, boiled, grilled, or broiled is a leading cause of Thanksgiving fires. Make the family come to you, and maybe they can help you cook as well.

Don’t Drink Alcohol While Cooking

Difficult to do but important. You want to relax and have a good time while slaving away in the kitchen. A drink or two couldn’t hurt, except it could. Drinking clouds your thinking slows your reflexes and makes you unattentive to detail. You know it and don’t drink and drive because of it. Preparing and handling hot food while under the influence is dangerous as well. Wait until dinner or after to have a sip.

Deep Frying Requires Enhanced Attention

Deep frying turkey has become increasingly popular, the fried turkey tastes great and in some ways is easier to prepare. Deep frying is also responsible for many Thanksgiving home fires. If deep-frying is your plan, fry it outside, off of decks, not in the garage, and away from trees and buildings. Never leave your fryer unattended, use a thermometer, avoid turkeys over ten pounds, wear goggles and mitts to protect your eyes and arms, never operate a fryer in rain or snow, keep children and pets away and always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. No deviations.

Never Pour Water On A Grease Fire

A grease fire is a different animal. Pouring water on a grease fire can actually make the fire spread. If a grease fire breaks out in your kitchen, stay calm, turn off the burner, quickly put on oven mitts, and smother the flame with a lid and baking soda. Never water.

Have A Working Fire Extinguisher Close By And Know How To Use It

And finally, the #1 Rule of Thanksgiving safety. A working fire extinguisher has saved the day, and lives, on many an occasion. Replace your fire extinguisher after 12 years, keep it mounted in an easily accessible location in the kitchen, and take the time to familiarize yourself with its operation.

Following the above Thanksgiving safety tips will keep a great day from becoming tragic. For more information, visit the (NFPA) at https://bit.ly/3BnXlFX.
