While the U.S. still has some work to do on catching up to the rest of the world’s rail services, this latest train news serves as a landmark. This week the world’s fastest train debuted, clocking in at speeds up to 373 miles per hour, a report says. The magnetic levitation (maglev) debuted in China and will not be as loud or require as much maintenance as other trains. With speeds up to 600 kilometers per hour (373 miles,) the train will be capable of cutting a 5 ½ hour trip down to just 3 hours. The high-speed maglev lets the train float while traveling, without touching the rail. China spent close to two decades developing the technology and research needed to launch its latest transportation venture.

Twitter Testing a Way to Dislike Replies

If you have always wanted to dislike a particular tweet, a new tool will be making its way to you soon. This week, Twitter announced that they are testing a way to up-or down-vote replies. The effort comes as a way to better understand what users find as relevant content. The company shared the news in a Tweet to their Twitter support page, notifying users that some iPhone users may see the option show up on their app. Currently, the feature has not been opened up to all Twitter users, with only a small undisclosed number being able to test the feature. “This gives people the power to privately voice their opinion on the quality of replies without publicly shaming others while also giving us more nuanced feedback,” Cody Elam, a user researcher at Twitter, said in a thread of tweets.

Microsoft-Powered Autonomous Robot is Here to Clean our Beaches

In eventual good news for California coastlines, robots may be helping to keep our beaches clean soon. A Dutch startup’s BeachBot robot has launched an initiative to rid our sands of cigarette butts. The start-up now has Microsoft’s artificial intelligence on hand to help the robot learn how. While the robot will only be learning how to pick up cigarette butts, the company hopes to clean up other waste soon. The startup was highlighted by Microsoft this week, with the company showing off the prototype machine. The robot uses the software giant’s Trove AI system as part of its learning process.

Lyft to Get Self-Driving Cars from Ford and Argo AI

Lyft will be joining the autonomous vehicle race this year in a new venture with Ford and Argo AI. The ride-hailing service will debut its “driverless cars” in Miami. The announcement was made this week after the company had to delay its efforts due to the pandemic. The company has high hopes to commercialize its autonomous ride-hailing service. Lyft will join the likes of Uber and Waymo as they work to provide a 21st-century option for ridesharing. Ford and Argo AI are working to create defined zones for autonomous pick-ups in Miami using the Ford Escape. A human safety driver will be onboard for pickups but the vehicle itself will drive riders to their end destinations.

In a recent LA Business Journal article, LABJ spoke with experts on how lockdown led to a greater want of exclusivity. Graham Culp, a partner at Meriwether believes it comes down to pent-up demand, stating demand was “off historic levels, but we didn’t see a lot of attrition.”. It was not until the last few months, as Culp continued on, that they saw a vastly growing demand for membership applications. With new social clubs arising, for what seems like every other day, Angeleno’s are left with a vast array of options. With the recent opening of Britely, the club joins San Vicenta Bungalows, Soho House, and many more.

California Lawmakers to Aid Small Theatres with a Portion of $50M State Budget

Small Theatres in California will receive much-needed aid in the recovery process from the pandemic. Lawmakers in California have set aside $50 million to assist small, nonprofit theaters. According to the NY Times, Small theatres had worked to lobby state officials for the one-time subsidy. This comes as theatres and venues of all sizes remained closed over the last 15 months due to the pandemic. The small theatre subsidy serves as one of several subsidy and assistance programs in the state’s $262.6 billion budget for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Lawmakers worked out the deal over the last several months with Governor Gavin Newsom enacting the budget in recent weeks.

Tyra Banks Opens Smize Cream Shop in Santa Monica

Supermodel Tyra Banks is turning her popular coined term into a new venture in Santa Monica. The frozen custard shop, Smize Cream, opening earlier this month in Santa Monica Place. Original plans for the space were meant for Banks’ 20,000 sq ft ‘Modelland’ attraction but was canceled due to the pandemic. Smize Cream tested the waters in the community by operating as a springtime pop-up before its opening debut on July 3. Dr. Maya Warren, an ice cream scientist and Banks’ team worked together to develop the flavors. Dr. Warren has a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in food science

New Relief Coming to Santa Monica Small Businesses

Santa Monica city officials announced this week that a new wave of relief will be coming to small business owners. The City of Santa Monica has partnered with LISC LA to launch the Santa Monica Small Business Recovery Grants. The aid will go to support Santa Monica’s small business community. Eligible businesses will be able to receive $5,000 in grant funds. Businesses are urged to apply from July 16 to July 30 at www.santamonica.gov/bizgrants with early applications encouraged. Over 75 small brick-and-mortar businesses will be eligible for the grant. Businesses that apply must be located in the City of Santa Monica.

House approves $19.1 million for San Fernando Valley transportation projects

With the U.S. House passage of the five-year $715B measure, several San Fernando Valley transit projects will receive federal funding. The bill will set aside $19.1 million for the region’s infrastructure to allow for modernizing roads, bridges, and transit among other needs. Legislators are hopeful that the new bill will also create jobs in the community while connecting communities around the region. Representatives like Congressman Tony Cardenas believe the measure will make a huge impact in San Fernando Valley. In a statement, he shared:

“This funding will help us fix our roads, get more buses on our streets, create jobs, and keep our community safe and connected”.

Burbank Library Eliminates Overdue Fines

If you have overdue library books from the Burbank Library, you’ll no longer have to worry about your late fees. As of this month, the library will no longer charge fines for late returns. The move to remove overdue fines was made in order to encourage item returns and increase library usage. “While fines for overdue items may seem like a small burden, they can create a major barrier to service for those who are struggling financially,” said Library Services Director Elizabeth Goldman in a statement. Burbank Library has made this move as an effort to follow other cities that have instituted the same revised policy.

This year’s event took place over the span of two weekends instead of its normal 4-day schedule. Twitter Says Goodbye to Fleets

Much like the purpose of the feature, Twitter’s Fleets were here a gone before we noticed or remembered to use it. The disappearing Tweet feature will be shutting down due to low usage, after launching just eight months ago. So what will be replacing that space at the top of your feed? Spaces…literally. Spaces — Twitter’s live audio chat rooms will take over the top of your timeline beginning August 3rd. In other great news, your traditional tweet composer will also get an update. Expect to see more camera editing features from Fleets, like text-formatting and GIF stickers over photos. Fleets were launched by Twitter as an attempt to get more users actively tweeting on the app. In a statement by Twitter’s VP of Product, Ilya Brown, the company admits the usage results were less than favorable. Stating, “In the time since we introduced Fleets to everyone, we haven’t seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation with Fleets like we hoped.” So use your Fleets while it’s there before it takes its final flight on August 3rd.

Google is Working to Make Browing More Secure

Google wants to ensure you have a safe browsing experience. So much so that the company will soon offer an HTTPS-first option. As the company announced this week, this will show a full-page warning when you try to load up a site that doesn’t support HTTPS. For those wanting to know the difference between the two or if it matters, we will explain. HTTPS is a more secure version of HTTP ( the “S” stands for “secure”). The majority of the websites we visit every day likely already support HTTPS. According to Google, the HTTPS-First Mode will be available starting with Chrome 94. The release date for Chrome 94 will be September 21, but HTTP will still be supported on browsers beyond that date.

Facebook Ditches Brain-typing as an AR glasses interface

You are probably thinking BRAIN TYPING! Yes, one of the world’s largest tech giants wanted to provide you with a way to message with AR glasses through brain signals. The multi-year collaboration between Fb and UC San Francisco, Project Steno aimed to create a system that translates brain activity into words. This week Facebook announced it would be backing off the idea of a commercial head-mounted brain-reading device. Instead, the company will continue its focus on building out wrist-worn interfaces instead. In a press release, Facebook clarified its current objectives. Stating, “To be clear, Facebook has no interest in developing products that require implanted electrodes,” Facebook said in the press release. They continued by stating, “while we still believe in the long-term potential of head-mounted optical BCI technologies, we’ve decided to focus our immediate efforts on a different neural interface approach that has a nearer-term path to market.”

Rollable LG OLED TV Launches to US Market for $100,000

If you have $100k and feel like splurging, the latest LG TV may catch your fancy. The futuristic rollable LG OLED 4K TV can roll itself up and then back down to fully disappear into its housing unit. Beyond being something straight out of a James Bond film, the TV is as luxurious as it sounds. The OLED 4K TV was first introduced as a prototype at CES 2018. This stunning 65-inch TV comes with a front-firing Dolby Atmos sound system, Dolby Vision, 120Hz 4K gaming, variable refresh rate, auto low latency mode, and more. Preorders will open for the LG OLED R in August and can be purchased through LG’s website.

Clubhouse Launches DM Feature

If you are a Clubhouse user and have been looking for a way to connect with other users in-app, Clubhouse has heard your request. The social audio app launched its direct messaging feature, Backchannel, this week for all users on both iOS and Android. This means you will now be able to chat one-on-one, in groups, and send links. Users will not be able to send images or videos, but a spokesperson says that functionality is coming. There will also be additional features on the way in the near future. The new feature was designed to help moderators chat among themselves during an active room. It will also let people connect after an event and be able to foster text conversations that otherwise would have to occur in a separate app. Backchannel will bring Clubhouse up to par with its competitors while giving users more of a reason to stay on the app than to venture off.

The Almost Amazon Wearable for Kids

In a recent report by Bloomberg, a wearable for kids had apparently been in the works at Amazon. The Alexa-enabled device was originally considered as part of Amazon’s 2020 roadmap as a part of the company’s kid-focused tech product portfolio. The wearable, codenamed “Seeker”, would cost $99 and include a GPS feature, voice activation, and be for children ages 4-12. According to Bloomberg, the wearable may come as a clip, keychain, or wristband. The device will also allow parents to track and communicate with their children.
