One Beverly Hills Nears Final Approval After City Council Vote

After a years-long wait in the approval process, One Beverly Hills has finally inched closer to breaking ground. The Beverly Hills City Council voted 4-1 the Supplemental Environmental Impact Report (EIR), General Plan Amendment, Overlay Specific Plan, and the development agreement. One Beverly Hills will include a luxury condominium and hotel development that includes renovations to the Beverly Hilton. The 17.4-acre multi-billion dollar project spanning Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevard will also provide 4.5 acres of green space. As a result, the proposal projects the property would generate $1.7 billion in gross revenues for the city over the first 30 years. City staff that helped negotiate the agreement believe it to be historical in the benefits afforded to the city. Once approved, One Beverly Hills will likely begin construction in 2023.

City Planning Commission Approves Venice Canal Affordable Housing Project

The Eric Owen Moss-designed Reese Davidson Community project has received the green light from the city planning commission. Architect Eric Owen Moss designed the supportive housing complex, which has been cleared for construction. A $75 million joint venture with the Hollywood Community Housing Corporation, the community, will run alongside Venice’s Grand Canal. The approximately 100,000-square-foot development will take over the space of two former surface parking lots. Most importantly, the project will primarily provide housing for homeless and low-income tenants with severely live-work spaces for artists. Additionally, the area will include a 3,000-square-foot community room and performance space called the Gregory Hines Community Arts Center.

Metrolink Begins Saturday Service in San Fernando Valley

City News: LA, Westside, SFV

Metrolink’s Ventura County Line began Saturday services this month. The weekend service will connect Moorpark and Simi Valley with stations in the SFV and Union Station in LA. For example, the line will stop in areas like Chatsworth, Northridge, Van Nuys,  and Glendale to help encourage weekend leisure travel. Subsequently, Ventura County Transportation Commission Vice Chairman Tony Trembley believes the new Saturday service will “help families get out and explore Southern California again”. Metrolink riders will be able to purchase a Weekend Day Pass for unlimited rides on the day of purchase. Likewise, free rides will be available for up to three children age 17 or younger that are traveling with a paying adult.

BH Tour D’Elegance Will Return on June 20

City News: BH Tour D’Elegance Returns, a New Dog Park in Santa Monica, and More

The annual Concours d’Elegance Father’s Day event will return this year on June 20 after forgoing the event in 2020. Tour D’Elegance has become known throughout Los Angeles as the premier classic car showcase for the local community. Likewise, the popular event will celebrate its 27th year and has been updated for public health and safety measures. This year’s event will feature an hour-long procession in place of the traditional display of vehicles on Rodeo Drive. According to the Beverly Hills Courier, the event will support local first responders, benefitting both the BH Police Association and the BH Fire Association. In short, Concours d’Elegance Father’s Day event will start at 10:00 AM on June 20th.

New Dog Park Planned for Santa Monica Water Garden

City News: BH Tour D’Elegance Returns, a New Dog Park in Santa Monica, and More

A new destination for furry companions could be coming to Santa Monica’s Water Garden soon. The dog park would be located in the plant area and parking ramp near 26th Street. Plans for the proposed park include a 2,300-square-foot pet space that will use a mix of concrete and greenery for the design. KSA, a landscape architecture firm is planning to design the project which will also feature benches and lighting. The news was announced this week, with no word on when the dog park will be approved.

New “Cabin Community” for Local Unhoused Angelenos Opens in Reseda

City News: BH Tour D’Elegance Returns, a New Dog Park in Santa Monica, and More

West Valley’s first “Cabin Community” for local unhoused Angelenos opened at the end of May. The new community consists of 52 tiny homes with 100 beds that will be available to those experiencing homelessness. The site, Sycamore Cabin Community, will be operated by The Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission. Construction of the community came to a cost of about $3.1 million. Sycamore Cabin Community plans to operate for five years. The second cabin community in the West Valley will be located on an underutilized Metro lot in Tarzana.

Echo Park Lake to Reopen After Monthslong Closure

Officials announced this week that Echo Park will reopen to the public on May 26 after a two-month closure. As a result, the reopening comes after the city allocated $1.1 million for improvements and repairs to be made to the 29-acre park. For instance, according to a Council District 12 statement, security cameras have been installed in the park “to help ensure that Echo Park remains safe and secure for all park users. In addition, other improvements include upgrading public restrooms and repairing electrical and irrigation systems. District Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell also said in a statement that “When Echo Park Lake reopens, the City will ensure that it remains safe, clean, accessible, and secure for all who wish to use this shared public space. The community can count on that”.

The City of Ventura to Open Inclusive Play Area for Children of All Abilities

The city of Ventura announced this week that construction is underway for a fully inclusive play area. Most importantly, plans for the play will allow for enjoyment for children of all abilities. The play area will be located at Arroyo Verde Park. Likewise, the new inclusive play area will have gathering places, a sensory garden, a motion-inclusive carousel, and more. Community members, families, and medical professionals provided input into the play area’s design. Consequently, it was through these talks that park designers were able to develop an adaptive play space where children of all abilities can play together. “The Arroyo Verde Park play area is the city’s first all-inclusive playground,” said Mayor Sofia Rubalcava in a statement. “This space will be a place where everyone in the community can come out to have fun and experience the joy of community connection and play, regardless of ability or age.”

Woodland Hills High School Earns national Academic Decathlon Crown

Students of El Camino Real Charter High School have nabbed their fifth consecutive national title in this year’s Academic Decathlon. The Woodland Hills high school students earned a complete of 55 medals in varied classes of the competition. In addition, this would make for the second honor of the year for the El Camino Real Charter High School students. Similarly, the decathlon participants also received the Southern California Independent Charter Academic Decathlon Regional Competition, held nearly on Jan. 30 and Feb. 6.

What: While the return to L.A.’s favorite cemetery screening has not yet returned to its original form, it will come back to life this weekend for a drive-in. Enjoy familiar fixtures like DJs, a concession stand, and tasty meals to go. It may not be as ghoulish but it is sure to be just as enchanting as the Cinespia we know and love.

What: While it is not the kind of shows we are used to seeing at the Music Venue, the Hollywood Palladium’s current exhibit worth a visit. Alta is southern cooking done right. Which makes it no surprise that the restaurant received The MICHELIN Plate: Good cooking honor in this year’s Michelin guide for LA. The comfort food and family-sized portions make Alta perfect for a night in or out. From golden-fried black-eyed pea fritters to fried chicken with caramelized sweet potatoes, you’ll want a family-sized portion all to eat all by yourself. 

Sunday Gravy

Location: 1122 Centinela Ave, Inglewood, CA 90302

If you love pasta, as most people do, then you will love Sunday Gravy. The Inglewood spot serves traditional Italian-American pasta dishes with a vintage touch. There is something for everyone to eat and enjoy with choices like fettuccine alfredo, linguini and clams, and spaghetti and meatballs.

Ronan

Location: 7315 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

A modern pizzeria whipping up suburb eats on Melrose, Ronan is a must. The seasonal share plates restaurant owned and operated by Chef Daniel Cutler and his wife, Caitlin, also received The MICHELIN Plate: Good cooking honor. One bit into one of their hand-tossed Neapolitan pizzas, and it’s easy to see why. We recommend the Sweet Cheeks for a honey-drizzled surprise that will no doubt have you coming back to Ronan for more.

Spruzzo Restaurant & Bar

Spruzzo serves as a delightful family-friendly restaurant option in Malibu. The inviting Italian eatery offers generous portion sizes and delicious food to eat. Enjoy an evening out on their airy rooftop with stunning views of the ocean that take Al Fresco dining to new heights. 

Fishing with Dynamite

Location: 1148 Manhattan Ave, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

If the name doesn’t pack a punch, the food at Fishing with Dynamite does and in the best possible way. Moreover, as one of the best restaurants in Manhattan Beach, FWD is worth the drive if you’re not local to the area. Enjoy delicious oyster-focused seafood in a trendy setting, with classic and innovative dishes you’ll love. 

Lucky’s Malibu

The popular Montecito spot made its debut in Malibu this year and has quickly become a local favorite. The upscale Malibu steakhouse resides in the former Mr. Chow spot, but you wouldn’t know from its revamped appearance. And the menu? It’s superb! In conclusion, from fried calamari, decadent steaks and chops, sautéed sand dabs, and more, Lucky’s delivers.

Black Market Liquor Bar is far more than the name suggests. Certainly, with American eclectic cuisine skillfully navigated by Executive Chef Antonia Lofaso, it is a much-needed upgrade to traditional bar food. Likewise, serving up dinner and brunch in an elevated setting, BMLB offers a refined approach to casual dining. For instance, indulge yourself with their Deviled quail eggs with ahi tuna and dill, for starters. You can do no wrong in entree selections like the Ricotta Gnudi with brown butter or pistachio or their juicy Friend Chicken and fries.

Ai Weiwei: Trace

What: Chinese artist Ai Weiwei brings his Alcatraz exhibit “Trace” to the Skirball Cultural Center in this limited engagement. The exhibition displays portraits of activists and prisoners of conscience made from millions of LEGO bricks. Ai Weiwei was inspired to create this installation after being imprisoned in Beijing due to his political activism.

 

Rooftop Cinema Club – Final Dates

What: Everyone’s favorite outdoor cinema experience has just a few more showings left before summer officially kicks off. Mesopotamia: Civilization Begins

Where: Getty Villa, Pacific Palisades

What: Take a trip back in time, a few millennia, to be exact, for the Getty Villa’s latest exhibit. View ancient jewelry, sculptures, and cuneiform writing from the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians. The objects on loan from the Louvre are broken up into three galleries. Because tickets must be timed for social distancing purposes, be sure to book your spot in advance.

Street Food Cinema Presents Jurassic Park

What: Let’s all head to the movies! Enjoy outdoor movie season at the drive-in with Street Food Cinema. Old Town Newhall Farmers Market

What: If you are searching for some of your fresh market favorites, look no further than this weekend’s Old Town Newhall Farmers Market. At this local event, you’ll also be able to pick up baked goods, flowers, herbs, cheeses, and prepared foods.  The Market offers locals a chance to come face to face with their food source. What: ‘Call of the Wild’ and exhibit by artists David Ruggeri is in its last two weeks at the San Fernando Valley Arts & Cultural Center. This installation, SCORE (Southern California Open Regional Exhibitions), celebrates the artistic relationship with flora and fauna in nature. 

Sound Mind Mental Health Music Festival

What: While this event is not taking place until next Thursday, we wanted to give you the heads up so you can reserve your spot. Enjoy music from artists like All Time Low, Fitz, and the Tantrums, lovelytheband, and Charlotte Lawrence for this drive-in concert. Taking place at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, proceeds from the event support the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Ventura.

Soulmate

Location: West Hollywood

Set in the heart of West Hollywood, this modern eatery draws its inspiration from the Spanish Mediterranean. Soulmate and Chef Rudy Lopez utilize SoCal’s best local ingredients set against the backdrop of a live-fire and open-air concept setting. The dishes are as stunning as the restaurant itself, with choices like their Uni Toast and Vegetable Fiduea. Just make sure you end the evening with what is considered one of the best Vodka sodas in WeHo from their hand-crafted cocktail collection and you can’t go wrong.

Big Boi

Location: Sawtelle-Los Angeles

If you are a fan of B Sweet Dessert Bar, then your in for an equally sweet treat with their newest venture Big Boi. The restaurant offers Filipino comfort food by Chef Barb Batiste. While they are currently only offering pick-up, their menu is perfect for a night in. The Chicken Adobo is their most popular dish and rightly so, with its ideal combination of garlic, soy, vinegar marinade. You can also treat yourself to their famous butter selection for a tasty morning spread. Choose from flavors like Ube, Buko Pandan, or Ensaymada. 

Meals by Genet

Location: Little Ethiopia

Rated with a Bib Gourmand by Michelin, Meals by Genet has been a long-standing city gem. The restaurant is perfect for a date night or evening out and offers fare that is ‘stunningly good’ as the Michelin guide suggests. Enjoy the pan-fried freshwater trout or Hirutye’s yebegsiga alitcha, a lamb dish featuring tasty and slightly spicy berbere and awaze paired with spongy injera. With every item on the menu being as delicious as the next, you can do no wrong.

Reel Inn Malibu

Location: Malibu

While a far less formal option for dining, the Reel Inn serves up seafood fare that has placed it on the list of local favorites year after year. The restaurant offers a fresh selection of seafood options from Lobster to Mahi Mahi and no shortage of seating in their sprawling seaside eatery. 

Gracias Madre Newport

Location: Newport Beach

Do you love Gracias Madre West Hollywood? Great, because the local favorites Newport Beach location is just as delicious with a slightly different setting. Their Heart of Palm Ceviche Toast is a perfect lunchtime choice for a sunny day, with ingredients like roasted coconut, mango, banana pepper, jicama, cucumber, coconut milk, and fennel. If you prefer something heavier, we suggest the Crab Cake Torta or Mole and Mushroom Tamale. 

Ollo

Location: Malibu

Another perfect local favorites spot for lunch, brunch, or even dinner, Ollo offers dishes using ingredients sourced from various local farms. Opt for one of their delicious artisan pizzas like the Burrata or Wild Mushroom and Spinach. Equally delicious choices also include the Zucchini Pasta or Tandoori Spiced King Salmon. We don’t have favorites because we genuinely love every dish on their menu, and we’re sure you will too!

Chick Next Door Hot Chicken

Location: Glendale

Chick Next Door Hot Chicken comes from the mind and skills of award-winning Chef Steven Velichnian. Their Chicken Sliders are some of the best that can be found on the west coast, turning comfort food into a destination for the taste buds. If you’re feeling a little chicken about spicey food, they have other options for you that are equally delectable. You can do no wrong with an order of Cheese Fries as long as you finish everything off with a churro or two. 

Szechuan Place

Location: Northridge

There is something about hidden restaurant gems in strip malls that always deliver, and that is, even more, the case with Szechuan Place. Considered one of the best Chinese restaurants in Northridge, they could easily be called one of the best in the valley. Try the Scallion Pancake or Cumin Beef, and then make it a point to try everything else on their menu because every dish is that good. 

Mizlala

Location: Sherman Oaks

Offering elevated Middle Eastern dishes in a simple modern setting, Mizlala is a vegetarian-friendly neighborhood delight. The restaurant now offers three locations, and it is easy to see why.  Any selection from their range of family-style dishes proves nosh-worthy. The Lamb Shewarma served on mini laffa with harissa, lebane, and tahina is a perfect selection for dinner. If you prefer to share, you can do no wrong with the Greek Grilled Octopus cooked with vinaigrette, capers, yogurt, crispy peewee potato.,

Feu Pho Kitchen

Location: Studio City

Known for serving authentic Vietnamese cuisine, Feu Pho Kitchen is a local favorite and star in Studio City. Specializing in Pho, the restaurant ups their game with ‘highly curated fresh ingredients. The Chilled Papaya and Mango salad make for a perfect starter. We recommend pairing it alongside popular pho dishes like the Ribeye Beef or Jidori Chicken. Either way, you’ll enjoy what you find in cuisine at Feu Pho Kitchen for lunch or dinner.

Firefly

Location: Studio City

Firefly delivers on ambiance, cuisine, and service, making it a must for those seeking the best evening setting. Offering a seamless melding of refined and rustic, vintage and contemporary, Firefly serves delectable dishes for both brunch and dinner. The Mushroom Pappardelle is exquisite, as is the Atlantic Salmon pan seared with summer squash, corn, shiitake mushrooms, edamame, red onion agrodolce, coconut curry broth.
