Home Tips: 5 Ways to Upgrade Your Home Office

Whether you work full-time from home or spend some days in the office and others working from home, a good home office encourages productivity. It can be hard at times to separate work from leisure when working at home, but the best home offices help you get your head right into work mode.

As well as having all the equipment you need to be able to do your job, a great home office is also an eye-catching and comfortable space that inspires you. After all, you’ll likely spend a significant amount of time each day in your office.

Here are five terrific ways to upgrade your home office to be more stylish, modern, and appealing.

1. Pick a Color Scheme to upgrade your home office

5 Ways to Upgrade Your Home Office

Effective use of color can transform a space from drab to cool and creative in just a few coats of paint. Aim to harmonize rather than clash to prevent distractions. Think fresh and stylish when it comes to luxury home office décor, and experiment with colors like coral, peach, aqua, and emerald green, for example.

Don’t limit colors to just the walls—coordinated colorful accents on furnishings can enhance the overall aesthetics. Think painted panels on drawer fronts, colored shelving, etc.

2. Get Artsy to upgrade your home office

5 Ways to Upgrade Your Home Office

Well-selected art pieces can stimulate creativity and encourage productivity. Pick a few favorite pieces and display them where you’ll see them regularly throughout your working day. You could perhaps consider a feature wall, with various striking artworks displayed, along with photographs and any other ornamentation that helps you feel energized.

Get creative with accessories, too, with organizers, pen holders, and other items that compliment your color scheme. The goal is to have functional items and make your day-to-day life in the office more convenient and look good.

3. Divide the Space to upgrade your home office

5 Ways to Upgrade Your Home Office

Room dividers can be a great way of effectively splitting your space for different purposes. If, for example, you don’t have a dedicated room for your home office but instead use space in your dining room, living room, or other room, dividers can give you a greater sense of being in your workplace upon entering the defined office space.

As well as traditional screens, you can divide your space in several other ways that both look elegant and help you maximize your space. For example, you could use dividing bookshelves or cabinets.

4. Upgrade Your Lighting
Images Courtesy of Neiman Marcus

Having plenty of lighting not only makes productivity easier, but it’s also much better for your eyes … especially if you’ll be looking at screens all day long. Move your desk closer to the window, if possible, to make the most of the natural light.

Make sure you have enough focused lighting, such as desk lamps and ambient lighting. You can really get creative with your light choices for a beautiful look. From hanging lights to wall lamps, and from desk lamps to floor lamps, there are lights to match your available space and your luxury home office décor aesthetic.

Color-changing lights can be perfect for an office. Research has found that blue shades enhance concentration, while yellow tones increase creativity.

5. Grow Some Plants to upgrade your home office

Add some plants to your home office to create a welcoming and relaxing ambiance. Aim for those that need minimal care to reduce distractions but still thrive indoors. You can use luxury pots that match your design scheme and have fun combining large floor-standing plants with smaller plants for shelves and window ledges.

Santa Monica 3rd Promenade to Possibly Allow for Housing and Hotel Development

The 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica may soon offer more than just shops and bites. A new proposal submitted by Downtown Santa Monica Inc., a nonprofit entity that manages the Third Street Promenade seeks to rezone for housing and hotel development. The area, which serves as 15% of the city’s annual sales tax revenue, currently has around 40% of its storefronts empty as a result of the pandemic. A portion of the proposal called the Third Street Promenade Stabilization and Economic Vitality Plan would also aid restaurants. The measure would allow restaurants to expand their outdoor dining spaces at street level and allow for more rooftop dining. In addition, the proposal also suggests plans for a “town square” at the intersection of Arizona Avenue. Likewise, the space would be closed for large gatherings and includes the creation of an arts center for live performances and events.

New Federal Rule Offers Protections for West Coast Orca Whales

A new federal rule will provide protection for endangered southern resident orcas down the West Coast. The protections reach from California’s Point Sure, all the way up to Washington and Oregon. The Center for Biological Diversity advocated for the measure, which will allow for 15,910 square miles of habitat to be protected for wildlife. In addition, the rule will also protect foraging areas, rover mouths, and migratory routes. The orcas historically have spent their summer along our coast and number around 75 among three pods. “This is an opportunity for not only Oregon but California to recognize these whales are not Washington’s whales,” said Deborah Giles, a research scientist at the University of Washington Center for Conservation Biology. “The Southern Residents are not local, they really are a widely ranging animal all the way down to Monterrey.”

Elon Musk Offers to Front the Bill for NASA’s New Spacesuits

From a $450k ticket aboard Virgin Galactic to Eco-Friendly AC tech

Anasa’s proposed date of landing on the moon may have a slight schedule change. A new report from the NASA Office of Inspector General says the spacesuits will not be ready until April 2025. This announcement will be a stark contrast to NASA’s plans for a 2024 launch. Upon hearing the new SpaceX founder Elon Musk made the suggestion that his company can step in to help. As the report this week notes, the delays are due to issues with the development of the Artemis moon spacesuits. These delays are from funding shortfalls, COBID impacts, and technical challenges. Since NASA began embracing commercial partnerships in recent years, the offer from Musks seems feasible to some. It was in July of this year that NASA said it would embrace partnerships “to optimize spacesuit technology and inspire pioneering in the space market”.

Facebook Rebuilds Ads to Know Less About You

The days of Facebook tracking your every move may be coming to an end…eventually. The company currently has hundreds of engineers working to rebuild how Facebook ads work to place more value on user privacy. This announcement came this week, according to Graham Mudd who serves as a top ad executive for the company. This shift, while still in its infancy, illustrates how the ad-supported internet economy has begun to rapidly change. Facebook, along with Google is working to reexamine several privacy-enhancing techniques to deliver personalized ads without knowing the specifics of a user.  “We definitely see that [ads] personalization will evolve very meaningfully over the course of the next five years,” said Mudd, Facebook’s VP of product marketing for ads.

Sky Cool Systems is Using Technology and Nature to Cut Your Air Conditioning Bill in Half

With summer days becoming hotter, air conditioning has become a more long-term staple of the season. With usage on the rise, Sky Cool Systems has set out to cut the cost of AC bills. And they want to save the environment in the process! The company uses rooftop panels made with nanotechnology. The cooling system reflects 97% of the sunlight that hits it thus cooling the surface below, according to the company. SkyCool’s model involves embedding a network of pipes below those panels. Since the panels cool naturally, they don’t need external power to function, which in turn helps the entire system use less electricity.

Economic update for the week ending August 7, 2021

U.S. employers added 943,000 jobs in July – The Department of Labor and Statics reported that 943,000 new jobs were added in July. That exceeded the 845,000 new jobs experts predicted. Average hourly wages rose 4% year over year. The unemployment rate was 5.4% in July, down from 5.9% in June. It has fallen from a high of 14.8% at the start of the pandemic, but is a long way off from its 3.5% rate before the pandemic.

Strong jobs report pushes stock markets to or near record highs – Stocks rallied on the news that employers added nearly one million jobs in July. It was widely felt that the spike in COVID cases would effect hiring, but it certainly did not in July. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the week at 35,208.51, up 0.8% from 34,935.47 last week. It is up 14.9% year-to-date. The S&P 500 closed the week at 4,436.52, up 1.0% from 4,395.26 last week. It is up 18.1% year-to-date. The NASDAQ closed the week at 14,835.76, up 1.1% from 14,672.68 last week. It is up 15% year-to-date.

U.S. Treasury bond yields – The 10-year treasury bond closed the week yielding 1.31%, up from 1.24% last week. The 30-year treasury bond yield ended the week at 1.94%, up from 1.89% last week. We watch bond yields because mortgage rates often follow treasury bond yields.

Mortgage rates – The August 5, 2021, Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Survey reported mortgage rates for the most popular loan products as follows: The 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 2.77%, almost unchanged from 2.80% last week. The 15-year fixed was 2.10%, unchanged from 2.10% last week. The 5-year ARM was 2.40%, down from 2.45% last week.

Have a great weekend!

Get your dose of weekly tech news! This week’s blog takes a trip into the Metaverse with Facebook and bids adieu to Sprints 4G LTE Network.

Microsoft and Facebook Seek to Build a Metaverse

From the Facebook Metaverse to Sprints 4G Shutdown

While the term and concept of metaverse may seem science fiction, the major tech shift to expanding out their platform proves otherwise. In recent months Facebook pushed forward on creating a metaverse group within their AR/VR-focused reality Labs. Microsoft at this time has been looking for the “enterprise metaverse”. The shift in focus from both companies is not just related to gaming but to rethinking how we live and work. Both companies are hoping to create a future-forward social hub, where avatars can meet in an ecosystem for connected apps. In a statement to CNET reporter Scott Stein, Mark Zuckerberg shared that his goal would be to bring people together for work. Microsoft and software developer Spatial each share similar goals. When and how these companies hope to bring a mass swath of consumers online and into their metaverse has yet to be determined.

CA Legislators Seek to Incentivize Buying Used Electric Vehicles

The Affordable EVs for Working Families Act seeks to incentivize used car purchases. The new legislation being pushed comes from California’s own Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Rep Jimmy Gomez. If passed, the bill would provide up to $2,500 off the purchase of a used electric vehicle. Their hope is that the initiative will drive down CO2 emissions. “This bill would help make electric cars affordable to a larger group of people,” said Feinstein. “With an electric car in the driveway, working families will be able to save money on gas and maintenance costs” Gomez added. Qualifying used EVs would need to be at least two years old and cost less than $25,000. Sorry, Tesla Fam.

TMobile to Shut Down Sprints 4G LTE Network

From the Facebook Metaverse to Sprints 4G Shutdown

It’s the end of a Sprint 4G LTE era. In the latest change since the two companies merged last April, T-Mobile has shared the next step in bringing the carriers together. Beginning on June 20 of 2022, Sprint’s 4G LTE network will shut down. The company stated that “retiring older network technologies” allow it “to free up resources and bridge the Digital Divide.” Part of this process, the statement continues, “involves moving Sprint’s LTE spectrum to the T-Mobile network.” The company has said that “most” Sprint LTE and 5G devices will work with its LTE or 5G network. The carrier added that it will contact those who could be impacted by the switch and that notifications began last year.

The New iOS15 May Include Less Green Flares and Another Camera Upgrade

From the Facebook Metaverse to Sprints 4G Shutdown

According to reports, the next iOS should feature another camera upgrade and less green flares. Yay! In Apple’s latest version of the iOS 15 beta, subtle improvements are showing to the phone’s photo processing. Those familiar with the green blobs that tend to appear when taking an image will know this persistent iPhone issue. Some iPhone users have already noticed the change on their devices while most others have not. As with most recent iOS updates, certain features have been limited to phones with the most recent A12 Bionic processor or newer (XS and XR onward). Users should expect this and more new features when the final iOS15 is unveiled.

Pentagon Uses AI to Predict Events Days into the Future

In what literally sounds like Deju Vu, aka everyone’s favorite Denzel film, the Pentagon is using AI to predict the future. While this may sound like pure cinema, it is not quite as Sci-Fi film-related as it sounds. Gen. Glen D. VanHerck, commander of NORAD, and US Northern Command shared in a recent briefing the latest results of the GIDE. “We’re taking sensors from around the globe, not only military sensors but commercially available information, and utilizing that for domain awareness,” he explained. “We would take artificial intelligence and use machine learning to take a look and assess, for example, the average number of cars in a parking lot that may be there in a specific location to a competitor or a threat.” The system is meant to look for changes in an environment, that if suspicious would trigger an alert. The technology used for the system is not new but rather a combination of existing resources. The Pentagon has not yet released specific details on what GIDE involves.

Square to Buy Afterpay for $29 Billion

Square, the processing for which Twitter’s Jack Dorsey is CEO and co-founder, has plans to expand its reach. In an announcement this week the company announced plans to acquire Australian company Afterpay.  Offering a “buy now, pay later” service, AfterPay lets you pay for purchases in installments interest-free. The purchase will be made for $29 billion in stock.  This serves as just the latest major move by Square which also announced a Bitcoin business unit. “Square and Afterpay have a shared purpose,” said Jack Dorsey in a statement. He continues by adding, “We built our business to make the financial system more fair, accessible, and inclusive, and Afterpay has built a trusted brand aligned with those principles.”
